| Gather ’round and let me tell you a tale of house hunting in East Nashville in 2011. Back then, the only houses in our very very tight budget were in East Nashville. Our superb realtor Marcie Nash showed us houses all over town, but saved the best one for last: the house that eventually became our sweet first home in South Inglewood. This house had been on the market FOR A WHOLE YEAR. We offered below their asking price and they immediately agreed, and were willing to fix everything that came up in the inspection. These days, this story would be a complete fairytale (the 2017 reality: we had multiple offers within 8 hours and were under contract in less than a day). | Déjenme contarles una historia sobre como compramos una casa en East Nashville en 2011. En ese momento, las únicas casas que podíamos comprar con nuestro presupuesto estaban en East Nashville. Nuestra corredora de propiedades, Marcie Nash, nos mostró muchas casas en distintas partes de la ciudad, pero guardo la mejor para el final: la casita que eventualmente se convirtió en nuestro primer hogar en South Inglewood. La casa había estado en el mercado por UN AÑO ENTERO. Ofrecimos bajo el precio inicial y los dueños aceptaron inmediatamente, e incluso arreglaron todo que apareció en la inspección, sin poner problemas. | Along with all of the other changes going on in our lives, we sold that sweet house a little over a week ago. I’m pleased to say that we sold it to a couple who is going to live in it and (hopefully) love it for the delightful house it is rather than tear it down and build two tall & skinnies over the grave of our first home. I don’t think the house will stay the way it is forever. Javier and I had plans to build back and up, and I expect the new owners have eventual plans similar to ours. But it’s nice closure for us to know that it’s in the hands of folks who will appreciate it like we did. | Junto con todos los cambios en nuestras vidas, también vendimos la dulce casita hace una semana. Estoy feliz de poder decir que la vendimos a una pareja que va a vivir en ella y amarla por la casa encantadora que es en vez de destruirla y construir dos casas en el mismo terreno. No creo realmente que la casa va a quedar tal como es para siempre. Javier y yo teníamos planes eventuales para construir atrás y encima de la casa, y es probable que los nuevos dueños también tengan planes similares. Lo bueno es saber que la casa esta en las manos de gente que van a apreciarla. |
| I loved that house. It is small, but it has charm. It is walking distance from Riverside Village, has a gigantic backyard (it’s the backyard from the Humming House “Run with Me” video!), and my very favorite part was the sweet front porch that Javier screened in the first year we lived there. I spent so many hours out on that porch in all kinds of weather doing homework, rehearsing with Hickory Slims, writing songs for Humming House, eating various meals, and watching Javier garden. | Me encantaba esa casa. Es pequeña, pero tiene encanto. Se puede caminar hasta Riverside Village, tiene un patio gigante (es el patio del video de Humming House para la cancion “Run with Me”!), y mi cosa favorita de la casa era el porche que Javier cerro e instalo malla. Pasé tantas horas en el porche haciendo tareas, practicando con Hickory Slims, escribiendo canciones para Humming House, comiendo, y mirando a Javier mientras el mantenia el jardín. |
| Speaking of gardens, we spent so much time re-working the front landscaping. Javier planned it so that different flowers and plants would pop up from the last frost in spring all the way past the first frost in the fall. Tulips, hydrangeas, butterfly bushes, daisies, roses, azaleas, hostas, ferns, lillies…the front has everything. The butterfly bushes were right outside the kitchen window so during the summer while cleaning the kitchen or cooking we’d always spot different butterflies floating at eye level just outside. We also planted two baby trees (tiny sticks) in the front yard that have since turned into gorgeous little Japanese Magnolia and Crepe Myrtle trees. | Hablando del jardín, pasamos tanto tiempo rehaciendo el jardín al frente de la casa. Javier plantó flores y plantas que crecen y florecen desde la ultima escarcha hasta después de la primera escarcha en otoño. Tulipanes, hortensias, buddlejas, margaritas, rosas, azaleas, plantas del hostal, helechos, lirios…plantamos todo. Las buddlejas estaban justo en frente de las ventanas de la cocina, y durante el verano mientras estábamos limpiando o cocinando siempre veiamos diferentes mariposas volando frente a nuestros ojos en la ventan. También plantamos dos arbolitos minúsculos en el patio del frente que han crecido y ahora son un magnolia japones y “crape myrtle” muy lindos. |
| So, all that to say, it has been bittersweet parting from that house. That seems to be a theme for me this spring. We’re thrilled it’s in good hands, but we were sad to let it go. Selling the house has freed us up to enter back into the housing market here in Louisville, but we aren’t sure yet whether we will be moving before Penelope arrives or not. With all the changes going on this spring it wouldn’t surprise me, but luckily there is no huge pressure to find anything at the moment. We’ll have to see! | Bueno, escribí todo esto para decir que fue una despedida agridulce de esta casa. Parece que esto es un tema popular para mi este primavera. Estamos muy felices que la casa esta en buenas manos, pero tristes de dejarla. Ahora estamos mas libres para entrar en el mercado de casas aqui en Louisville, pero no estamos seguros todavia si nos vamos a mudar antes de la llegada de Penelope o no. Con todos los cambiamos que hemos recibido esta primavera, no me soprenderia. Lo bueno es que no hay prisa para encontrar algo en este momento. Tenemos que ver! |
