THE FINISHED LANDSCAPE!

I still can’t believe we never posted about our finished landscape. After all that work and all those updates along the way – we never showed off the finished product! I think it was such an effort to do the landscaping that the thought of describing the final push to finish was too much to write about! But now we’re a bit removed from it and we get to enjoy the beautiful work every day as it blooms and brightens up the front of our house….so it’s time to share!

this may seem a little weird – but this is Hickory Slims posing last December in front of the house – note there is NOTHING in the front bed! Very different now. DSC_2969 (1)

When we left off last time, I think all we had left to finish was to clear out the weeds and sod from the shade garden on the far left side of the house and then we had to plant all of the plants. In the front we have 6 butterfly bushes, a bunch of little purple flowers (can’t remember the name…typical), 6 hydrangeas, two peonies, a bunch of GORGEOUS calais lilies, three bunches of Mexican shell flowers and clover bulbs, a pot of alyssum, and a shade garden with hostas, japanese ferns, autumn ferns, 5 azalea bushes and three nandinas. We also still have the two half-barrels full of pansies and then of course the 5 rose bushes on the side of the house. It looks AMAZING!

this was from the day we started in January – see what is to the left and right of my feet – weeds and weeds and sod!20130714-185659.jpg

When we first planted everything, they were all teeny tiny baby plants that you could barely see from the street. It looked like we had planted a bunch of dead twigs as a joke. The hostas were tiny, the ferns looked dead with just a couple of leaves poking out from the ground. The hydrangeas didn’t have any blooms or leaves, and all of the bulbs were still underground, leaving a huge empty space in front of the planted hydrangea-twigs.

But then…the rains came. And the heat came. And the sun shone through the clouds like heaven was smiling down on our hard work…and lo and behold, we had sprouts, followed by full-fledged leaves, followed by BLOOMS! And it looks AMAZING. I didn’t expect to get big enough hydrangea booms to pick and bring inside, but we’ve had PLENTY of those. I have to prune them back because they are so big! The shade garden is flourishing and it looks awesome. The butterfly bushes grew to 10x what they were when we first planted them and the blooms are vibrant and beautiful.

The Mexican shell flowers came up after a bit and they are so interesting! They only bloom for one day, then they close up and die and a new one comes out from the same pod the next day. It’s really cool. The calais lilies are my personal favorite – they are colorful (I’ve only ever seen white ones – these are so beautiful!) and they last forever. We got more than we expected which was an added bonus when they surfaced. The azalea bushes have taken awhile but they are finally coming through with beautiful pink blooms. What else? Oh yes – the peonies. We didn’t get any blooms this year, but that’s normal, especially because we planted them so late. They’ll be great next year!

  1. Your flowers look amazing! Cngratulations. It is hard work. I know, I too have been busy in my yard. Hope to see more pictures later when it is really established! Great job!

    • Thanks! It is hard work, but once the little plants start growing and blooming, all the work turns into just happines and bliss. Good luck with your yard!
