| So getting back to our lovely weekend with my aunt Jane and uncle Bruce – the night after we went to the symphony we went out downtown to hear a very different kind of music in a very different but equally wonderful venue – songwriters at the Ryman! The Ryman put on a special night for the Academy of General Dentistry, which included performances from well-known songwriters Tim Nichols and James Dean Hicks, plus new performer Brinn Black and the headliners of the night Kelly Lang and her husband T.G. Sheppard. | Asi que volviendo a nuestro genial fin de semana con Jane y Bruce – la noche despues de haber ido a la sinfonía, fuimos al centro de la ciudad a escuchar un tipo de musica diferente pero en un lugar igualmente genial – compositores en el Ryman! El Ryman puso un show especial para la Asamblea General de la Academia de Odontologia, el cual incluyo presentaciones de compositores muy conocidos como Tim Nichols y JAmes Dean Hicks, mas una nueva artista Brinn Black y los artistas principales de la noche Kelly Lang y T.G. | This time we had a great view from the balcony, and I was thrilled to hear James Dean Hicks kick off the night. My brother and I used to go hear James Dean Hicks every single Tuesday night my freshman year in college at the Tin Roof – it was the only bar in Nashville that didn’t card and it had the best music in town on Tuesday nights. James Dean Hicks is an incredible songwriter, and he’s been writing hits for country stars for a long time. One of the great things about hearing songwriters perform is that you get to hear the stories of how they came up with the songs they wrote – these guys at the Ryman were great story-tellers and it was very cool to hear how some of my favorite country songs came into existence. Tim Nichols co-wrote “Concrete Angel” for Martina McBride, for example, and I loved hearing the story of how such a serious song came about. | Esta vez teníamos una buena vista desde el balcon, y yo estaba emocionada de poder escuchar a James Dean Hicks para empezar la noche. My hermano y yo solíamos ir a escucharlo todos los martes durante mi primer ano de universidad en el Tin Roof – era el unico bar en Nashville que no pedían mayoria de edad y tenian la mejor música en la ciudad la noche del Martes. James Dean Hicks es un compositor increíble, y ha escrito musica para estrellas del country por mucho tiempo. Una las mejores cosas de escuchar a estos compositores cantar es que puedes escuchar las historias detras de cada cancion que escribieron – estos tipos en el Ryman eran fantasticos para contar historias y fue muy entretenido escuchar como esas canciones tan hermosas salieron a la luz. Tim Nichols escribió junto a otro compositor “Angel de Concreto” para Martina McBride, por ejemplo, y me encanto escuchar como una cancion tan seria fue escrita. |
| At the intermission my uncle Bruce bought us a really beautiful Hatch Show Print poster that we could get the artists to sign, and we collected the signatures of every artist that performed that night. I also talked for a minute with Mr. Hicks and told him the story about my brother and the Tin Roof – he actually said he remembered me (we were always up front) but I’m not sure if he was serious or being really nice. Anyhow, it was great fun meeting the songwriters and getting a few photos with them. | Al intermedio my tio Bruce compro un poster de Hatch Show Print que pudimos pedirle a los artistas que lo firmaran, y coleccionamos la firmas de cada uno de los artistas de esa noche. Tambien pude conversar por un minuto con el Sr. Hicks y le conte la historia de mi hermano y yo escuchandolo en Tin Roof – el dijo que se acordaba de mi (siempre nos sentabamos en primera fila) pero no estoy segura si lo dijo en serio o solo estaba siendo amable. Pero bueno, fue entretenido conversar con los compositores y sacarnos fotos. |
| Kelly Lang was a real hit after the intermission – her voice was exquisite and her performance was so elegant, complete with an all-sequence dress with long sleeves that flowed around when she sang and interacted with the audience. It was fun to see T.G. Sheppard too – he sang a bunch of his #1 hits (he had 21!) from the 70s. Bruce also bought us “meet and greet” passes for after the performance which was awesome – we got to go back behind a roped off area (I was feelin pretty special!) and meet Kelly Lang and T.G. Sheppard after the show and get their autographs to complete our collection on the poster. Such a fun night!! We had a really wonderful weekend with Jane and Bruce and we just can’t WAIT til they live here in Nashville! (hint hint HINT…!) Thanks again to both of them for giving us such a spectacular music-filled weekend (and birthday weekend for me!) | Kelly Lang fue el hit despues del descanso – su voz es exquisita y su presentacion muy elegante, completa con un vestido de acuerdo a la ocasión con mangas largas que colgaban y se movian mientras ella interactuaba con la audiencia. También fue entretenido ver a T.G. Sheppard – el canto un montón de sus canciones que alcanzaron el numero 1 (tiene 21 de ellas) en los anos 70. Bruce tambien compro pases para conocer a los artistas despues del show, lo que fue espectacular – nos pusieron destras de un area cerrada con cuerdas (nos sentimos especiales) y conocimos a Kelly Lang y T.G. Sheppard despues del show y tambien nos dieron sus firmas para completar el póster. Que noche mas entretenida!! Pasamos un fin de semana espectacular con Jane y Bruce y no podemos esperar a que se muden a Nashville!! (pasando en dato…) Gracias nuevamente a ambos por invitarnos a un fin de semana tan lleno de música (y un fin de semana de cumpleanos para mi!) |
