Penny’s room has been a work-in-progress since we moved into the house, and we are adding to it all the time. There was no rush for us to finish P’s nursery before she was born because we didn’t really use it for anything besides diaper and clothing changes until she was about six months old when we finally started putting her in her crib to sleep. For the first five months of her life she slept in a pack n play at the end of our bed, and we kept her rocker in our room because that was where I nursed her at night or pumped. |

You can read about the carpet removal and painting process in this post from last summer. I also posted about her dresser that I refinished, which now holds all of her clothes and her diaper changing station sits on top. We added a shelf above the dresser where we keep her diapers – the little gray caddy has her disposables that we use at night and usually we keep the reusable cloth diapers in stacks next to it. |
Almost everything on display is either vintage or handmade from a local artist or friend. On the wall by the diapers we hung a beautiful print that my parents and grandma bought me in North Carolina a few years ago with the intention of it going into a nursery someday. It goes with a children’s book they gave me called The Rabbits Dance and is signed by the artist. Hanging from the diaper shelf is a Louisville ornament made by local artist and friend Bri Bowers. On the wall next to her crib is a sweet painting that I will cherish forever that Javier’s grandma painted for Penny. Behind the crib are two vintage brass horses galloping across the wall – I took a couple of these photos before I added this other vintage wall hanging of cast metal horses from the 1970s Sears and Roebuck catalog. I’m planning to put a few more things up there with them eventually but I love these horses, especially for a Kentucky girl! |
Above her crib we hung a beautiful mobile that our dear friend Kacie made for us. She gave it to us at the Humming House baby shower and I am so in love with it I kind of want a big one to put above me in my room – it’s so peaceful and sweet! |
Speaking of her crib, it’s a hand-me-down from her cousin Gia! It’s perfect for P and it’ll eventually become a toddler bed. The bookshelf used to be our orchid bookshelf and now houses her growing collection of kiddo books, both in English and Spanish. The little red leather shoes we are using as bookends were Javier’s – I can’t wait til she fits them! All of those stuffed animals were gifts – lucky girl. Note the Chori look-alike and the llama which, when I first took photos of her room, lived on the diaper shelf. I noticed she kept reaching for it whenever I changed her diapers and the day I gave it to her it became her favorite animal. Josh gave it to her at the Humming House shower and it now lives in her crib and goes with us on trips. |
One of my very very favorite items in her nursery is the blown up print of the drawing the Marissa Troy did of my sweet Humming Hounds a couple of years ago. I adore Marissa’s art and we struck up an instagram friendship back in 2015 when HH was on tour with Kacey Musgraves (she’s a KM fan and has done several really incredible drawings of Kacey’s various animals – check out her art at instagram.com/marissatroy). She first drew a portrait of each of my dogs and gifted me a sweet mug with the images (my favorite mug!!) and then a year later she came to one of our shows in Boston and gave me a shirt with this graphic of my dogs running together. She later gave Javier a shirt with the same image and we both wear them all the time! I asked her if she’d be willing to give me a file that I could blow up and have printed and framed for P’s room. She was kind enough to send it to me and now it hangs on the wall by P’s door – I ADORE it! Thank you Marissa!! Gracias Marissa!! |
Penny’s curtains came from my mom, which she made out of a sweet flannel fabric called “Party Llama.” We picked the fabric out about a month before P was born and my mom made them just in time! We didn’t set out to make a llama theme in her room but llama stuff is just so cute and it reminds me of Humming House AND Chile, so now we have the llama curtains, her llama stuffed animal, and when we saw these llama sheets at Pottery Barn Kids we couldn’t resist them (thank you grandma! <3). We also have blackout curtains that my mom tailored to fit our windows behind the llamas. Thanks mom! Gracias mama! |

Most of the rest of the room is vintage: the heart mirror, the brass animals, the dresser. I found this pink oval frame at goodwill and decided it’d be a perfect home for a favorite photo of one of Javier’s orchids that Humming House actually used as the cover art for our cover of Paul McCartney’s “Maybe I’m Amazed” in 2016. I’m trying to make an effort in our house to print and frame more photos – I’ll post more about that soon – but I love how this turned out. We finally moved her rocker into the room back in March and I think it’s my favorite piece of furniture that we own and that Javier didn’t make. If you’re in the market for a rocker for a nursery I highly *highly* recommend a reclining one. It rocks, it swivels, and it reclines when I need it to – so perfect. We got ours are Buy Buy Baby (I hate the name of that store but it was a place of wonders). We are still planning to add an area rug so hopefully that happens in the next couple of months. |
The last addition to the room is this beautiful side table that Javier built for her a couple of months ago. We needed something that I could use for my phone or a book or a drink while I nurse her, and it’s a great resting spot for the Sonos speaker that she stole from us (we decided to let her have it when we realized she cannot sleep without Spotify’s “Peaceful Guitar” playlist on repeat all night). Never one to just make any old table without adding some flare, he used a really cool bookend style of woodworking for the top to jazz it up a bit – I love it. So yeah, P has the coolest furniture in the house and certainly the most complete and decorated room so far since we moved in. Maybe someday we’ll move on to the rest of the house…! |
