This year we’re collecting fairs – we already wrote about our trip to the Williamson County Fair but we still have yet to post about our trips to the Wilson County Fair and the State Fair. Javi and I have gone to the TN State Fair every year since we first started dating, mostly to see the animals. The first year we went we got to hang out with all the sweet goats but the next year we went we completely missed all of the animals because we went so late in the day. Now we know to go earlier in the day when all of the competitions are going on so we can pet and take photos of all the animals we can. I think we mostly love to see these animals because we are dreaming of and planning our future farm, complete with mini donkeys, goats, chickens, mules, horses…goats…mules…that’s the basic idea. We’ll never be able to go on vacation but we’ll have fresh goat cheese and chicken eggs and darling animals all year ’round. This is our paradise… |
Anyway, the Wilson County fair was enormous. It’s about 45 minutes away but it took us almost 2 hours to get there because the traffic was atrocious. We finally arrived, parked about a quarter of a mile away from the entrance, then waited in line for quite awhile to get tickets before we finally made it in. We made a beeline for the animal barns and saw a bunch of sweet goats and miniature donkeys, but those were the only animals at the fair that day so we moved on to the food. The rides around the fair were crazy and there were hundreds of booths selling local and fair food. We went with fair food, obviously, and moved on to hear some live bluegrass at a little stage near the front gate before we decided to leave. |
This was a pretty quick trip to the fair – we enjoyed it because it was fun to do something different and to see this gigantic fair that everyone was talking about on the local news and radio, but it was just a little too big. We were completely overwhelmed, there were throngs of people everywhere, and we probably overspent (I got a $12 drink because it was bottomless and came with a cool mug…damn you fair gimmicks!). The traffic also started things off on the wrong foot – we couldn’t stay too long once we got there because we had left the dogs close to dinner time and we didn’t want to keep them too long without food. So…it was fun, but it wasn’t the best. We recommend it if you want a huge fair, but if you’re cool with dinkier, slightly less electrifying and stimulating fairs then definitely stick with the State Fair. Which, speaking of, we’ll post about next! |
