| Alright, this is the last post in our state & county fair series, which is really an excuse to bring you adorable photos of farm animals. Then we’ll move on to more contemporary goings-on in the LRL of late. The last fair we went to was the most excellent TN State Fair, which we think Goldilocks would agree is “just right.” Not too big, not too small, just the right amount of TN awesomeness in the form of little furry animals and horrendous (but delicious!) fair food. | Ok, este es el ultimo post sobre ferias, lo que es una escusa para poner fotos de lindos animalitos. Luego volveremos a los post mas regulares de lo que pasando en nuestras vidas. La ultima feria que fuimos fue la excelente feria del Estado de Tennessee, muchos estarian de acuerdo que esta es la mejor feria. No muy grande, no muy chica, suficente cosas geniales de Tennessee en la forma de tiernos animalitos y horrendamente poco saludable (pero deliciosa) comida. |
| The highlight for me were the mules – we’ve never been to the fair when there was a barn FULL of beautiful, enormous mules. These guys are so sweet and they remind me of our trip to CO where we took a mule ride in the mountains. Apparently mules are smarter, stronger and sturdier than horses, and good Lord this fellas were huge. One of them was particularly affectionate and kept nuzzling up to me when I tried to take a pic with him, and I think the photo turned out to be pretty cute…he looks happy too, don’t you think? I wanted to bring him home. | Lo mejor fueron las mulas – nunca habiamos estado en la feria cuando los establos estaban llenos de hermosas y enormes mulas. Estos tipos son muy tiernos y me recuerdan de nuestro viaje a Colorado donde hicimos una cabalgata en mulas en las montanas. Aparentemente las mulas son mas inteligentes, mas fuertes, y mas duraderas que los caballos, y por Dios estos eran GRANDE. Uno de ellos era particularmente carinosos y no paraba de poner su cara en la mia cuando intentabamos sacar una foto. Creo que la foto salio tierna…el se ve feliz tambien, no creen? Me lo queria traer a casa. |
| One fantastic plus to this year’s trip to fair was the triumphant return of the hot beef sundae! Javier ate one of these two years ago and I was too grossed out to try it and stuck to my regular corn dog instead. When he force-fed me a bite of his nasty sundae I realized that it isn’t, in fact, beef with ice cream but rather a dish of pot roast, gravy, mashed potatoes, cheese and a cherry tomato on top made out to look like an ice cream sundae. How was I supposed to know? They fry BUTTER at these fairs. Anyway, I wanted one last year and I was so excited to about my hot beef sundae but to my everlasting sadness the fair didn’t invite the beef sundae back! This year they remedied that most egregious error and we were pleased to find our favorite dish right where it was in 2011. YUM. | Un plus fantastico este ano fue el retorno del sundae de carne! Javier se comio uno hace dos anos y a mi me dio asco verlo asi que me comi un hotdog. Pero cuando me forzo a probar una cucharada de su sundae asqueroso me di cuenta que era en verdad delicioso. Yo pensaba que era helado con carne, pero de hecho era pure, con salsa de carne, carne, queso y un tomate cherry que lo hacia parecer un helado. Como iba yo a saber eso? Hay cada cosa en estas ferias! Pero bueno, yo queri uno el ano pasado pero me dio mucha pena ver que el carrito no vino a la feria el ano pasado! No los invitaron! Este ano arreglaron su error y por suerte pudimos volver a comer uno….cada uno….YUMM! |
| Before we left, we went over to Volunteer Village and watched a flying dog frisbee show. The doggos put on a great show running around, jumping up on their trainers backs and catching frisbees several feet up in the air – they were so excited about those frisbees. You’d never know that they had already done the show two times previously that very day – they acted like they had never seen a frisbee before. So fun! | Antes de irnos, fuimos a la Villa de Voluntarios a ver el show de perros voladores. Los perros hacen un muy buen show corriendo como locos, saltando desde las espaldas de sus entrenadores y atrapando discos a metros de altura – ellos se vuelven locos con los discos. Ni nos dimos cuenta que habian tenido un par de shows antes, tienen muchisima energia! Y cada vez pareciera como si nunca hubiesen visto un disco antes! Muy entrenido. |
| The TN State Fair is definitely our favorite, and we’re sad that the 2013 fair season has come to a close. Now it’s time to welcome the fall – and the cultural fair is coming up this weekend in Centennial Park, so we’re looking forward to that. Welcome fall!! Please bring the cold! Oh the joys of fair food 😉 I grew up going to at least several county + state fairs as I participated in 4H as a kid and actually showed animals, and I definitely had my favorites! (can you say frito pie and hand shaked lemonade?? delicious!)
