| Clothesline: We wrote a post a few weeks ago about this little addition to our home. To summarize, we barely use the dryer (we will most likely use it in the winter), we use less electricity, we are not adding drying sheets to the garbage, and we are enjoying spending a little more time outside. | Linea para colgar ropa: Escribimos un post hace un par de semanas sobre esta pequena adicion en nuestro hogar. | Composting: For my birthday, Annie gave me a composter. A composter is basically a plastic barrel with a couple of openings where you put you “green” garbage so it becomes dirt. You can use this very “nutritious” dirt for potted plants or a garden. You can buy these at Whole Foods, but Annie bought this one from the city of Nashville. They offer them at a reduced price to promote composting at home. Besides making good dirt to feed our plants, the amount of garbage we throw in the trashcan has reduced significantly, so fewer bags are going to a garbage landfill. | Composta: Para mi cumpleanos, Annie me regalo un “comportador”. Un compostador es basicamente un barril platico con un par de aperturas donde se ponen los desechos vegetales para que se degraden y conviertan en tierra. Puedes usar esta tierra llena de nutrients en plantas o huertas. Se puede comprar un compostador en Whole Foods, pero Annie compro este directamente del municipio de Nashville. Ellos los ofrecen a precio reducido para promover la composta en el hogar. Aparte de hacer Buena tierra para nuestras plantas, el volume de basura que tiramos al basurero se ha reducido significativamente, asi que menos bolsas de basura van a parar al vertedero. |
| Rain barrel: A rain barrel is the perfect complement to a home garden. We get a fairly good amount of rain in Tennessee but sometimes holding some of that rainwater for the dry spells is a great way to save money when watering is needed (or for indoor plants!). Homes have gutters already so the hardest part is already taken care of. You can buy the barrels online, at a gardening store, home improvement store, make your own….plenty of options! | Barril de agua lluvia: Un barril de agua lluvia es el complement perfecto para una huerta en casa. En Tennessee tenemos una Buena cantidad de lluvia durante el ano, pero a veces guardar un poco del agua lluvia para esas semanas de sequia es una gran manera de ahorrar dinero cuando se necesita regar (o para plantas interiores!). La mayoria de las casas tienen canaletas instaladas, asi que la parte mas dificil ya esta hecha. El barril se puede comprar en linea, en la tienda de jardineria, en la tienda de majoras para el hogar, puedes hacerlo tu mismo…hay muchas opciones! |
| We needed a couple of tries with our barrel. Our first set up didn’t have enough elevation so the water didn’t have enough pressure coming out at the end of the hose. To fix this issue, I collected some of the extra lumber I had from other projects (dog houses, screened in porch, workbench and office desks) and built a stand for the barrel. The stands keep the barrel 2 ½ feet from the ground, so gravity can do its work and increase water pressure. | Nosotros necesitamos un par de intentos con nuestro barril. La primera vez que lo instalamos, no pusimos suficiente elevacion y el agua no corria con suficiente fuerza al final de la manguera. Para arreglar este problema, junte toda la madera estra que tenia de otros proyectos (casa de perros, porch del frente, mesa de trabajo, escritorios) y construi una mesa para el barril. La mesa eleva el barril a casi 1 ½ metros del suelo, asi que la gravedad puede hacer su trabajo e incrementar la presion del agua. |
