| Since we wanted to have a new office that we could both use, we needed to have desks for both of us. We would love to have two big old desks with plenty of drawers, leather top, shiny old wood and with a big work area…but those desks usually come with a price tag out of our range. So I thought for a few minutes and came up with a plan to make a big desk with few resources and little effort. I came up with the most basic design that would provide a big work area (which is the most important feature for us – we both tend to spread out). Since I was interested in making them inexpensive and quick, I forgot about drawers or super high quality wood (I used the best wood for the price). This is the plan for my desks (one for Leslie and one for me – identical): | Ya que queríamos tener una nueva oficina que se los dos pudiéramos utilizar, necesitábamos tener mesas de trabajo para los dos. | For the legs and supports I used 2 x 4 x 8 studs (I can’t remember the exact price but it wasnt more than $3.50 each and I bought 7). For the top I used a 4 x 8 x 3/4 sheet of MDF (about $30) and asked the people at Lowes to cut it in four 2 x 4 pieces – of course I used two pieces and saved the rest for another project. I had some extra wood glue (don’t need much, just a small bottle) and some extra 2″ screws that I used for the screened porch. We also bought a red oak wood stain ($8) to give them some color. So let’s say that in total, materials for the desks were about $50 (taking into consideration that I used only half of the MDF sheet) or $25 per desk!!! | Para las piernas y los apoyos use piezas de 2 x 4 x 8 (no recuerdo el precio exacto, pero no fue más de $ 3.50 cada uno y yo compramos 7). | The best thing about building your own desk is that you decide the height! I hate when tables or desks are too low and I end up looking like I’m 120-years-old trying to read something while bending over. So, using a miter saw, I cut 8 legs about 30″ tall. I made all the cuts at once to ensure the same length in every piece. I cut 8 short supports for the sides and 4 long supports for the back side of the desk. Using my Kreg Jig (get one if you don’t have one – it will save you time and will make your final product much better) I attached all the pieces, starting with the side panels. Next I attached the long supports to the panels and the main part of the desks were done! I glued the top to the structure, clamped it and let it dry for 24hrs (Chori was in charge of guarding the new desks!). Once thing I would recommend if you are thinking about trying to build your own desk….always make sure you have straight cuts and 90 degree joints. You want your furniture to be level, so measure twice and cut once. It takes a little longer, but ensures a great final result. | Lo mejor de construir tu propio escritorio es que uno decide la altura! No me gusta cuando las mesas o escritorios son muy bajos y termino pareciendo como si tuviera 120 años de edad, tratando de leer algo.Por lo tanto corté 8 patas cerca de 30 ” de altura. Hice todos los cortes de una vez para asegurar la misma longitud en cada pieza. Corté 8 soportes cortos para los lados y 4 soportes largos para la parte de atrás. Use mi Kreg Jig (compren uno si no tienen uno – les ahorrará tiempo y hará que su producto final se vea mucho mejor). Uní todas las piezas, primero los paneles laterales. Quieren que sus muebles estén nivelados, así que midan dos veces y corten una. Se demora un poco más, pero se asegura un gran resultado final. |
| Once everything was dried, we proceeded to stain the desks a dark wood color. The pine takes the stain really well, but the MDF will absorb it like a sponge, so it takes a long time for the strong smell to go away (we are still suffering). If you don’t want to stain it, you can paint it any color or leave it natural, it’s your desk! We love having these nice working areas and it makes it much more enjoyable to think that you built the furniture you are using. And for $25 a piece….even better!
