| So here it is…our beautiful new office! We’ve already told you about the bookshelves, desks and magnetic paint. Here are a few more details about the work we put into this little cozy corner of the house.My original inspiration for the dark blue color came from a Valspar historic colors brochure Javi and I got from Lowes when we were trying to figure out what color to paint the porch (…which we still haven’t done). I loved the blue / brown / rust contrast in this photo (below), though I think it looks dark gray on the computer. Anyway, I went back to my trusty Pinterest search and typed in “blue paint” and came across this other lovely picture (also below), which had a deep blue but lighter than the one in the Valspar brochure. This blue was the goal, and I think we nailed it. | Asi que aqui va…nuestra hermosa oficina! Ya les contamos sobre las repisas, escritorios, y la pintura magnetica. Aqui van algunos detalles mas sobre el trabajo que pusimos en crear esta comoda esquina de nuestra casa.Mi inspiracion por el color azul oscuro vino de un panfleto de Valspar con colores hisotricos que Javier y tomamos en Lowes cuando intentabamos encontrar un color para pintar el porch (…lo que aun no hacemos). Me encanta el contraste entre azul / cafe / oxido en esta foto, aunque en el computador se ve mas como un gris oscuro. Pero bueno, me meti a Pinterest para buscar alguna idea y escribi “pintura azul” y encontre esta linda foto, que tenia un azul profundo pero un poco mas claro que el del panfleto de Valspar. Este azul era la meta, y creo que le dimos medio a medio. |

| As I mentioned in the post about the magnetic keyboard / magnetic wall, I originally wanted to paint a chalkboard on the wall. When we scrapped that idea in favor of the magnetic paint, I decided I could still get a smaller chalkboard on one of the doors, and the door provided a nice clean frame for the black. So far it serves to keep Javi informed about my schedule…since he always forgets when I have to be on campus and when I’m free to be at home with the doggos. We also took an old mirror that I got from a yardsale years ago and, after Javi accidentally broke the mirror trying to put nails in the back of the frame, we decided we could make it into a fun chalkboard / sign using the wood that held the mirror in in the back. The frame is really rustic looking and cool and it happens to match two other frames we bought from Michael’s over the break when his dad gifted us a beautiful portrait of Mary. Anyway, we painted it with the chalkboard paint and Javi wrote a lovely “Los Rodriguez Office” on it. In case someone didn’t know this room was an office…hell, now there’s a sign to clear things up! | Como mencione en el post sobre la pintura magnetica, originalmente queria pintar un muro con pintura de pizarra. Cuando cambiamos la idea por pintura magnetica, decidi que podia poner una pizarra pequena en una de las puertas, y el marco de la puerta le daria un marco a la pizarra con harto contraste. Por ahora sirve para mantener a Javi informado sobre mi agenda…ya que el siempre se olvida cuando tengo que ir al campus y cuando tengo libre para estar en casa con los cachorros. Tambien tomamos un espejo antiguo que compre en una venta de garage hace un par de anos atras y, despues que Javi lo quebro tratando de poner clavos en la parte de atras, decidimos que podiamos transformarlo en una pizarra entretenida para un letrero usando la madera que sostenia el espejo. El marco es muy rustico y genial, y anda perfecto con los otros marcos que compramos en Michael’s durante las vacaciones cuando el papa de Javier nos regalo un retrato muy lindo de la virgen Maria. Asi que pintamos el ex-espejo con pintura de pizarra y Javi hizo una lindo letrero. En caso que alguien no se daba cuenta que el cuarto es una oficina……bueno, aqui va el letrero para que quede claro! |
| We moved the leather couch and grandmother clock from the original office setting into the new office and they look fabulous! The brown contrast with the blue is exactly how I imagined it would be. We inherited the clock from my great-grandfather who received it as a gift from First Tennessee Bank in 1992 for being “Jefferson Countian of the Year.” My aunt Jane and uncle Bruce kept all of my great-grandmother and great-grandfather’s furniture in a storage unit after they passed away and gave it to us when we bought the house – it was an amazing gift to have such quality furniture right away. The couch was actually the first couch that Jane and Bruce owned – and it’s AMAZINGLY comfortable (but very difficult to maneuver around corners!). | Movimos el sofa de cuero y el reloj antiguo de la oficina que habiamos creado en la lavanderia a la nueva oficina y se ven genial! El contraste del cafe con el azul es exactamente lo que me habia imaginado. Heredamos el reloj de mi bisabuelo quien lo recibio como regalo del banco First Tennessee en 1992 por ser el la persona del ano del condado Jefferson. Mi tia Jane and tio Bruce guardaron todos los muebles de mis bisabuelos en una bodega despues de su muerte y nos los dieron cuando compramos la casa – fue un regalo increible poder tener muebles de buena calidad. | I wound up moving my coffee pot, coffee mugs, beans and grinder into the office. I may be the laziest person in the world, but it’s awesome not to have to get up to the kitchen every time I need a refill. I just slide my (ergonomic knee) chair over to the pot! Pretty sweet. We also moved the diplomas into the office and situated them above the desks like they were before in the old office. The two desks sit side by side, essentially making one gigantic desk where Javi and I can spread out. The big computer is in the middle so we can turn it in either direction when one of us needs to use it. Oh – and see the little gold square standing up on my desk? Javi built me a kindle stand, since I couldn’t find one on amazon. Hooray for the craftiest guy ever! | Termine moviendo mi cafetera, tazones, granos de cafe y moledor a la oficina. Puedo ser la persona mas floja del mundo, pero es genial no tener que ir a la cocina para rellenar la taza. Solo empujo mi silla (ergonomica) hacia la cafetera! Muy bakan. Tambien movimos los diplomas a la oficina y los pusimos sobre nuestros escritorios como estaban en la antigua oficina. Los dos escritorios quedaron uno al lado del otro, practicamente creando un escritorio gigante donde Javi y yo podemos poner todos nuestros papeles. El computador grande esta al medio asi que lo podemos girar en cualquier direccion dependiendo quien lo necesite ocupar. Oh – y ven ese cuadrado dorado en mi escritorio? Javi me construyo algo para poner mi kindle o libros y permanezcan de pie. Hurra por un tipo talentoso! |
| The last little (very important) tidbits: first, my mom made me those amazing curtains when I moved out of my on-campus apartment to my first house my sophomore year in college. They are perfect in every way – I especially love the tabs that the curtain rod goes through. And speaking of the curtain rod, Javi and I got the curtain rods, supports and hold backs from Lowe’s for extra clearance – a little over 10 dollars for all of it, and it’s Allen Roth which is usually pretty expensive. I have no idea how we got so lucky. The hold backs are actually giant curtain rod ends that were also on extra clearance ($2.50 each) that we figured we could try out as hold backs…and they work beautifully. So sweet! | La ultimas cositas (muy importantes): primero, mi mama hizo estas cortinas increible cuando me mude fuera del campus a mi primera casa durante mi segundo ano de universidad. Son perfectas en todo sentido – me encantan especialmente las orejas que le hizo para pasar el palo del soporte. Y hablando de cortinas, Javi y yo compramos todo lo necesario para poner las cortinas en Lowes en extra liquidacion – como $10 por todo, (palos, sujetadores, soportes, etc..) y es Allen Roth lo que quiere decir que normalmente no es tan barato. No se como tuvimos tanta suerte. Todo se ve muy bonito y funciono a la perfeccion. Muy lindo! |
| So…I think that about covers everything. We’re beyond thrilled with the end result – it’s hard to believe we completed this entire transformation in three days! For the last week I’ve been excited to wake up at ungodly hours in the morning to read and study. I’m hoping the “new office” effect keeps my work ethic in tact at least through July…it’s not too much to ask right? Check back soon and we’ll show you what we did to the old office…it’s now a gigantic pantry / doggie playroom that is almost as exciting as the office (almost). | Bueno…creo que eso cubre todo. Estamos mas que felices con el resultado final – la ultima semana he estado contenta de levantarme temprano en la manana para leer y estudiar. Espero que el efecto de la oficina nueva mantenga mi etica de trabajo por lo menos hasta Julio…no es mucho pedir verdad? Revisen el blog de nuevo pronto cuando les mostremos que hicimos con la antigua oficina….ahora es una despensa / pieza de juego para los perros gigante que es casi tan bakan como la oficina (casi). |

Or maybe you could open up a re-purposed furniture, art and accessories store in Nashville – it would be a big hit! Great job – love the re-do! Just curious – what are you studying – hope it’s something in the arts! 🙂
haha thank you so much Laurie! We love spending time making our house better – it’s so satisfying to see the results! Opening a store would be amazing…if only I could have five careers at once! I’m studying Sociology at Vanderbilt. Not quite the arts but it can definitely be a creative subject! 🙂
