5 things I’ve learned after a week of P90X – Javier’s list

Okay, so yesterday Leslie posted her list of 5 things she’s learned since starting P90Xand the diet that goes with it. Just because we are doing the same diet doesn’t mean the experience is the same for both of us. She’s interested in losing weight, I’m interested in gaining. That makes the diet and exercise both pretty different for each of us. Here is a list of the 5 things I’ve learned in just a week!

Eating a lot is not easy, but it gets easier: The diet that accompanies the P90X program requires me to eat a significant amount of food throughout the day. You can argue that eating is easy…sure…I can eat pizza, fried chicken, steaks, French fries, cupcakes and all that good stuff all day, but that is not exactly a balanced diet or healthy. Eating a lot of healthy proteins, low fat foods, and veggies is not an easy task (at the beginning!) but once you get into a rhythm and figure out your portions and favorite flavors…it gets easier. And if you are a little creative with your food, it can enjoyable and very tasty!

( My breakfast on the left vs. Leslie’s breakfast on the right. )

Blending vegetables…not my favorite: Last week we said it would be easier to blend our portions of fruits and veggies and “drink them” during the day. Well, that was a good idea in theory…but our taste buds thought otherwise. I decided I like fruits and vegetables and I would rather eat them and flavor them as they are supposed to be eaten. Whole…not blended. A couple of the mixes turned out alright (the first one we made and mentioned last week was good, for example) but I made some nasty mixes too (note to self: never use V8 juice in your blend!). Enteros…no batidos.

(The above mix was actually one of our few successes – bananas, celery, honey, spinach, some water and protein powder.)

(The above is the recovery shake pre-blend. Blueberries, strawberries, Kale, spinach, juice, protein powder and Leslie’s favorite- flaxseed)

Gaining weight can be just as difficult as losing it: My goal with this program is to gain some weight. There is one proven way to gain weight: eat more calories than you burn. My problem is that I have the gift of a very active metabolism and low percentage of body fat, so I need A LOT of calories to gain weight. Many might say…”pff, that’s easy”…and I agree, it easy if you eat unhealthy and very fatty foods. Gaining weight has always been a challenge for me – I’m trying to build lean muscle. It’s not easy, but I’m doing my best and I’m pretty sure following this regimen will get me there!

(One regular meal of mine – spinach, broccoli & tuna)

(salmon, rice and cucumbers)

Use help: Working out with a partner is the best thing to keep me motivated and accountable. Leslie and I have a goal and a reward at the end of the 90 days that keeps us going. While working out, if I can’t do more reps, I always look for some help. Some examples: I use a chair if I can’t continue with regular pull ups, I put my knees down and keep trying to push if I can’t do one more regular push-up. I’ll take any help that will allow me to do more.

(don’t we look SO excited to be awake at 6AM to do kempo??)

Have fun. Yeah it’s painful sometimes and the workouts make you tired. We can’t eat things like burgers or fried chicken and we can’t have a beer to unwind. But overall we are having fun. We joke around with all the ridiculous stuff we have to do, the cheesy lines the P90X instructor says, the stupidly fit people in the DVDs and how pathetic they make us look. But our favorite is definitely making the X with our arms at the most random times!

  1. Fantastic blog! Do you have any hints for aspiring writers?
I’m planning to start my own blog soon but I’m a little lost on everything.
Would you advise starting with a free platform like WordPress
or go for a paid option? There are so many options out there that
I’m totally confused .. Any ideas? Cheers!
