Los Rodriguez health kick!

Today Javi and I are starting a new diet that goes along with our 90 day adventure with P90X. Javi and I spent the whole weekend scheming about our new daily menus – it might as well have been our first ever trip to Trader Joes because we didn’t buy many of our usual foods. Our entire cart was full of fruits and veggies, protein bars and nuts, no beer and no animal crackers…it’s going to be an interesting 3 months! Javi and I usually eat the amount of fruits and veggies in a week that we’re supposed to eat daily, so this is going to be really good for us.

the longest grocery list ever

The “diet” actually has a ton of food involved and it changes over the course of the program. It looks like shakes and V8 juice will be a pretty cheap and easy way to incorporate all the fruits and veggies we’re supposed to eat – starting with an awesome shake that my friend Nikita recommended to us. She sent me the recipe and we made some last night -it’s so green (and tasty)!!

Javi made a bunch of little cards with the number of servings of each food group we’re supposed to eat (according to our body weight etc.) for the first phase and we’ve arranged them on the fridge…so it’s basically the most intentional eating we’ve ever done. The “fat” card is usually going to be avocados and olive oil and the shake I mentioned above takes care of the veggies and fruit we need every day. Fitting all of those proteins in is the hardest part right now – 5 servings a day is a ton of protein for me compared to what I normally eat. By the third phase I’ll be eating more carbs than protein and that’ll be much easier (and cheaper)!

This weekend we ate all the foods we know we won’t be able to eat while we’re following the new regimen including Pepperfire hot chicken, Pei Wei, onion rings and beer…it was fabulous. We start the brutal exercise plan on Thursday, so for now I’m trying to enjoy being able to move without wincing!

  1. Congrats on the new plan! I have heard P90X is AWESOME and you will feel wonders when your diet gets all changed up to more fresh fruits and veggies. Humberto and I are almost 100% vegetarian during the week and eat meat only on the weekends (or for dinner, which here, is like a small sandwich or an espetinho, true Latin American Style, of course). Check out myfitnesspal.com, its awesome. I have totally fallen behind since i’m getting ready for classes to start, but its an awesome site. I love it. I tell everyone about it.

    Go get ’em!

    • thanks lady! We’ll definitely check it out! I’m excited – I already feel better just eating more fruits / veggies and we haven’t even started the workouts yet. It’s going to be a great change for us!
