A weekend of Puerto Rico

Javi and I just wrapped a terrific weekend spent in the company of Ian and Andrea who came down from Chicago to visit for a few days. We found out they were coming last weekend so it was a great surprise – Ian had a few meetings for work that he managed to schedule on a Friday so he could make a weekend of it and Andrea flew down after she got off work. One of the main things we like to do when we’re all together is play Puerto Rico (I’m sure I’ve mentioned this before). We played 4 times this weekend – once Friday night, once Saturday night and twice on Sunday afternoon. It’s at least a 2-hour long game, but it’s great because once you take your turn there’s plenty of down time, which meant plenty of time for me to read and get work done for class this week.

Saturday was a perfect day. Javi and I woke up early to get some work done and then headed over to my parents house where my mom prepared a gigantic breakfast with popovers (normally served on Christmas morning in this family), bacon, sausage, eggs and orange juice. The sun was shining and the weather was phenomenal so we decided to take the doggos to the dog park and let them run around. Chori is seriously out of shape so he was exhausted after the first 20 minutes – but to be fair, we hadn’t been in so long that he went ballistic as soon as we let him loose so he wore out pretty quick. We took a quick trip to Hillsboro Village to show Andrea around, grabbed a coffee at Fido and then Javi and I dropped Ian and Andrea off at the Gulch to look around while we took the pups home.

In the evening we went to happy hour at the Holland House – I love that place! It’s so beautiful inside and the drinks are awesome (and strong!). We took over the bar because the tables were all reserved til 10:30 but it worked out great and we stayed for two drinks and a couple appetizers before we headed over to the Family Wash for dinner. This was our chance to show Ian and Andrea around our side of town and make sure they experienced some of the best of what East Nashville has to offer (time permitting – next time it’s a trip to the Village Pub and Silly Goose!!). We all indulged in the usual scrumptious Shepherd’s Pie, then headed off to Jeni’s to cap off the night with some fine gourmet ice cream. Apparently everyone else in Nashville had the same idea – the line curled all the way around the store!! We couldn’t believe there were so many people out to get ice cream in January!

On Sunday we met up with everyone at my parents’ house after spending the morning working on homework. We played two more back-to-back rounds of Puerto Rico – and I won the last round! It was another beautiful, sunny day – perfect flying weather for Ian and Andrea – and they left at 6:00 for the airport. Now it’s back to homework and a new week but I’m feeling pretty good about this week after getting back to my healthy self and spending a few great days with my big bro and his lovely wife. Happy Tuesday, y’all!

  1. I love ice cream the best in the winter months. My family would bundle up and walk over to the sonic right in front of our apartments grab some ice cream and get cookies from subway right next to the sonic all the while freezing until we would rush back to our warm and cozy apartment and attack our ice cream and cookies. Strange I know.

    • Oh yeah that sounds like a good time. The people at Jenni’s explained to us that since winter is slower, they have a chance to get creative with flavors so sometimes the best flavors would become available in the colder months.
