Last Saturday I told Javier I wanted to go out just me and him on a date the following Saturday (as in, last night) since it was our first chance to take advantage of a few gift certificates that my dentist (…for a referral) and Javier’s coworker gave us for Christmas. My dentist sent us a gift certificate to the movies and we have $$ toward a dinner at Outback Steakhouse from his coworker, so it seemed like a great date night set up to me. I’ve been dying to see the Girl with the Dragon Tattoo (I even re-read it over the break to prep) so I was pretty happy with my plan. Well, Javier’s idea of a romantic date night, I’m quickly learning, is painting and pizza. That’s right – we spent yesterday (and night) painting our guest room-turned-office and getting it ready for lots of pomodoro-style homework sessions. We spent the morning at Lowes spending some gift certificate money we got from my parents and my cousin buying wall paint, chalkboard paint, magnetic paint, curtain rods, wood wood and more wood, and a couple new fun power tools for Javi. On Friday night Javi drew up some plans for building two desks for each of us, so he was busy all day in his workshop cutting the wood and fashioning together a couple of awesome desks. He finished both before 7:00! |
El sabado pasado le dije a Javier que queria que salieramos juntos los dos solos el proximo Sabado (anoche) ya que era la primera oportunidad que teniamos de usar un par de certificados de regalos que nuestro dentista y una companera de trabajo de Javi nos dieron para navidad. Mi dentista nos dio un par de entradas al cine y la colega de Javi nos dio una gift card para un restaurant, asi que me parecia la cita perfecta. Me muero por ir a ver la pelicula Girl with the Dragon Tattoo (incluso me volvi a leer el libro durante las vacaciones para prepararme) asi que estaba contenta con mi plan. Bueno, la idea de Javier de una cita romantica, estoy aprendiendo, es pintar y comer pizza. Eso – nos pasamos el dia pintando la pieza de invitados – y la transformamos en una oficina donde podre usar mi tecnica pomodoro para estudiar. Pasamos la manana en la tienda y usamos una plata que nos regalaron mis papas y mi primo en navidad para comprar pintura, pintura de pizarra, pintura magnetica, los palos para cortinas, madera, madera y mas madera, y un par de herramientas entretenidas para Javier. El viernes Javier dibujo unos planos para construir 2 escritorios para nosotros, asi que estuvo muy ocupado todo el dia en su taller cortando madera y confeccionando todo para el par de escritorios. Los termino antes de las 7! |
| Meanwhile, I spent the afternoon painting the pale green guest room a deep midnight blue. Once we unveil the “after,” I’ll post my inspiration for the color (I can already hear my mom saying “dark colors make the room feel smaller…”). The blue is perfect and beautiful and exactly what I hoped the office color would be. I also had some fun with the magnetic and chalkboard paint…more on that when we post about the finished room. Tomorrow, I’m going to stain the desks a red oak wood stain and at one point Javi is going to build shelves from the rest of the wood he didn’t use for the desk. I CANNOT WAIT TO HAVE BOOKSHELVES!!! Right now I’m using a bakers rack as a bookshelf and it’s all we have in the house, so half of my books are still in storage at my parents’ place. The new bookshelves are going to ROCK. |
Mientras tanto, yo pase la tarde pintando el verde claro de la pieza de invitados por un azul. Una vez que terminemos y mostremos todo, hare un post sobre la inpiracion por ese color (ya puedo escuchar a mi mama diciendome “colores oscuros hacen que la pieza se vea mas pequena…”). El azul que elegi es perfectp y lindo y exactamente lo que esperaba para la oficina. Tambien lo pase bien usando pintura magnetica y pintura para pizarra….mas de eso en el post sobre la oficina terminada. Manana voy a barnizar los escritorios con un color roble rojo y en algun momento Javi va a crear repisas con el resto de la madera que nos quedo. NO PUEDO ESPERAR MAS POR LAS REPISAS!!! Ahora estamos usando un aparto de fierro que se supone es para poner cosas de cocina como estante, y como es lo unico que tenemos, la otra mitad de nuestros libros estan en casa de mis papas. Las nuevas repisas van a ser geniales! |
| Anyway, I’m giving Javi a hard time about not going to Outback and the movies but frankly, we need this new office space and if we don’t get finish it this weekend it’ll never happen (or at least, it won’t happen in time to enjoy the office this semester). So I guess we’ll just have to do the run-of-the-mill dinner and a movie next week…in the end I’ll take this version of a date night any day. | Pero bueno, ya me hice la idea de que no iremos a ningun restaurant hoy o al cine, pero francamente necesitamos esta nueva oficina y si no lo hacemos este fin de semana no se cuando lo haremos (o no se si lo haremos antes de que termine el semestre). Asi que tendremos que suspender nuestra cita para la proxima semana….al final prefiero este tipo de cita mas que ninguna otra. |
