Now it’s just us…

Well, the house is now pretty empty. It’s back to just the 4 of us – Javi and me and the pupsters. Yesterday was the first day in a month that I came home to an empty house (with the exception of the doggos) – no Paula knitting on the couch, no Mery crocheting by the window and  no Pancho cutting up fruit in the kitchen. As if to mark the occasion, yesterday was the first truly cold day we’ve had in a couple of weeks – it actually snowed a tiny bit (though to Nashvillians it was like a snowpocalypse). We’ve really lucked out with the weather for the past several weeks, with only a few days here and there where it got even close to freezing. Hell, I left the house without a coat yesterday. Anyway, the heavens opened up and let loose a bit of snow just as Paula took off on her plane to Miami at around 6AM. Javi and I woke up with her at 3:30 to get her to the airport by 4…needless to say it was a rough morning the second time I woke up before going to class. Paula had a 10 hour layover in Miami…such a drag.

Anyway, on Wednesday, Paula’s last day, we had a good time trying to make the most of it. After running a few errands to make sure all the loose ends were tied up before she hopped on the plane, we picked up Javi from work and went straight to the Family Wash. Throughout her stay here Paula got to eat at the Pied Piper 4 times, Jeni’s ice cream 4 times, the Village Pub twice, Puckett’s twice, Monell’s twice…I mean she really got to live it up here! So she got to pick the location for her last Nashville meal and it was between the Silly Goose and the Family Wash. In the end she decided on the Family Wash because she figured she can’t make the Shepherd’s Pie back in Chile. We just so happened to show up on kids night – their first kids night in fact, so all you Nashville parents listen up! Kids eat free – or at least that’s what I understood, none of us qualified for the kids menu. They also had entertainment from the soon-to-be-renowned Professor Smartypants, a jolly fellow in a bowler hat playing a banjo and kazoo. Although we didn’t have any kids with us, we had a good time for the first few songs Prof. Smartypants played (he started playing when we got our check)…I mean, in case you haven’t already noticed, Javi and I are pretty much two big kids. His songs were mostly about food, which was appropriate for the setting, and the kids clapped and laughed so I’m guessing they’ll probably continue the kids night thing.

After dinner Paula treated us to Jeni’s ice cream – her final chance to get that pistachio & honey / lemon ice cream that she loves. Javi got a gigantic sundae called the Mock Turtle and I got a cup of the pistachio & honey / PB & dark chocolate. With sprinkles. Aaaahmazing. To top off the night we watched the last two episodes of Band of Brothers (we watched the whole series over the last few days…I’m obsessed) and…packed the suitcases. That last part wasn’t fun but the rest of the evening was great! Three hours after we fell asleep we were up again on our way to the airport…saying goodbye to loved ones is not my favorite way to start the day, but we know we’ll see her again soon!

from Paula's first trip to Jeni's back in December
That's 3:42 AM
So now it’s officially back to the routine. I survived my first week of the semester, Javi is almost finished with his first week back at work and the pups are going to have to adjust to having our undivided attention again without any other family members to distract us. I know it’ll be hard for them!
