| Back in 2012 Javi and I wrote a post about how we made DIY Big Face Posters for my dad and brother’s 30/60 birthday party. I put the post up on pinterest without knowing anything about how pinterest works (I still don’t really know much) and since then the post has brought over 200,000 views to our blog via pinterest. It’s just silly. As a DIY post it was pretty awful. We barely described how we actually made the fatheads and the photos are atrocious. I decided we should re-do that post with actual instructions on how to make a fathead poster with proper photos for Penny’s first birthday! | En 2012, Javi y yo escribimos un post sobre como hicimos gigantografias para el cumpleanos 60/30 de mi papa y mi hermano. Pusimos la historia en Pinterest sin saber nada sobre como funciona Pinterest (y aun ahora no estoy segura) y desde entonces el post ha tenido mas de 200,000 visitas en el blog. Es de locos. Como una historia de hagalo usted mismo es terrible. Apenas describimos como las hicimos y las fotos eran malisimas. Asi que decidi rehacer el post con verdaderas instrucciones y fotos decentes para celebrar el cumpleanos de Penny! |
| To start, pick out a photo you want to blow up. This was the hardest part of the whole process for me because I have thousands of photos of P (and she’s only 1). You should try to use a photo that has a relatively plain background so that it’s easy to find the lines of the head to cut it out (the bubbles photo was a tough one because there wasn’t a delineated border between the bubbles and the white tile wall behind Penny). | Para empezar hay que elegir la foto que se quiere usar. Esta es la parte mas dificil del proceso para mi porque tengo miles de fotos de Penny (y solo tiene 1 ano). Hay que tratar de usar una foto con un fondo vacio para que sea facil encontrar las lineas de la cabeza cuando se corta la foto (la foto con burbujas fue dificil porque no tenia un perimetro bien delineado ya que las burbujas blancas se perdian en el fondo blanco) |
| Crop the photo to just the head and upload the file to your printer of choice. We used Costco and printed 20×30-inch photos – each one was only $10. The one of her smiling showed a low-resolution warning when we uploaded it, and it did come out slightly pixelated but that didn’t affect how it looked from far away. You’re not framing these- they are just meant to be funny props! The resolution doesn’t have to be perfect. | Reajuste la foto para que solo quede la cabeza. Una vez esto esta hecho, hay que imprimir en grande. Nosotros usamos Costco y la imprimimos en 20 x 30 pulgadas – cada una costo mas menos 10 dolares. La foto de ella sonriendo me dio una advertencia de poca resolucion cuando la subi a la pagina de Costo para imprimir, y la impresion salio un poco pixelada pero no afecto como se veia de lejos – las fotos no son para ponerlas en la pared sino para que sean divertidas! La resolucion no tiene que ser perfecta. |
| Once you have the photos, cut around the heads before you attach them to cardboard. Then, find two large pieces of cardboard for the back. We used a box we saved when we bought a baby gate from Home Depot…but whatever large single piece of cardboard you can find will work. Glue the head to the cardboard and let it dry (we used Elmer’s spray super glue). | Con las fotos impresas, hay que cortar antes de pegarlas en carton. Luego hay que buscar pedazos grandes de carton para usar como soporte. Nosotros usamos la caja de la reja para bebes que compramos en Home Depot…pero cualquier pedazo de carton grande sirve. Luego pegamos las fotos usando pegamento (nosotros usamos pegamento en spray Elmer’s) |
| Once the glue is dry, grab your scissors (they need to be sharp and sturdy) and start cutting around the head! Little mistakes won’t be noticeable from far away, but try to get as close to the line of the head as possible. We used two pairs – a giant pair of craft scissors and a tiny pair of thread cutters. | Una vez seco y pegado, tomamos las tijeras y cortamos el contorno! Pequenos errores no se notaran de lejos, pero hay que tener cuidado y tratar de cortar lo mas cerca posible del borde de la foto. Usamos un par de tijeras grandes para le mayoria y unas chiquita para los detalles. |
| You’re pretty much finished at this point! Javi (being Javi) fashioned little handles out of packing tape and taped them to the back so we could hold the heads without obstructing the image. Once you have the photos in hand it doesn’t take longer than an hour to get the fatheads ready, and the whole project cost us less than $30 for two fatheads. It was a perfect party accessory – the bigger kids loved it and we got a good laugh out of Penny’s reaction. In the days after the party she didn’t want to leave the fatheads alone! | Ya con esto todo esta practicamente terminado! Javi siendo Javi, creo un par de manijas con cinta adhesiva en la parte de atras para poder sostenerlas sin tapar parte de la imagen con las manos. Una vez que tienes las fotos impresas, no toma mas de una hora en tener todo terminado, y el proyecto solo cuesta $30 por dos gigantografias. Fue el accesorio perfecto – los ninos mayores lo pasaron bien usandolas y sacandose fotos y nosotros nos entretuvimos con las reacciones de Penny. Incluso despues de la celebracion ella queria seguir jugando con sus fotos! |

The dollar store carries foam-core boards that (I think) are big enough for this wonderful project. Super easy to cut out with an xacto blade. Just a thought…
