| Sweet Potatoes are a sign of fall. Last year my experiment with growing sweet potatoes was disappointing. The vines grew nicely, but I ended up with just a couple of decent sized potatoes. This season I was determined to do better (which was not so hard after last season’s low standard) so this year I set up a box just for the sweet potatoes. The box was filled with about 16 inches of rich, loose soil. I left the vines untouched for the entire season, except for watering, until the first frost hit middle Tennessee. | Camotes son una senal del otono. La jardinera la llene con mas o menos 40 centimetros de tierra suelta y rica en nutrientes. No toque las plantas durante toda la temporada, pero si las regue, hasta que la primera helada llego a Tennessee. |
| When the foliage wilted and started to turn dark, it was time to harvest. I was really excited to see what I would find under those leaves, and to my delight the harvest this time turned out pretty good! I ended up with several pounds of sweet potatoes. One of them is the biggest one I have ever seen! | Cuando las hojas se marchitaron y volvieron oscuras era hora de cosechar. | So for those thinking about growing sweet potatoes here is what I did and learned this season:- I planted the slips once there was no chance of night temperatures under 60°- I watered the vines often- I did not touch them. I let them grow freely.- I harvested immediately after the first light frost | Asi que para aquellos que quieren crecer camotes, esto es lo que hice y aprendi esta temporada:– Plante las plantas cuando no habia mas posibilidades de temperaturas bajo los 15°– Regue las plantas seguido– No las toque y la deje crecer libremente– Coseche de inmediato after de la primera helada |
| Overall the sweet potatoes are very low maintenance. You have to be patient since they take a while to grow, but the rewards are great! Next season give them a shot, but remember the vines grow like crazy and everywhere so don’t plant them close to other plants that grow low to the ground. | Despues de todo los camotes no necesitan mucha mantencion. Tienes que tener paciencia ya que se demorar un poco en crecer, pero el premio es genial! La proxima temporada intenten crecer camotes, ero recuerden que las enredaderas crecen como locas y para todos lados asi que no las planten muy cerca de otras plantas que crecen cerca de la superficie. |
