Planting Peonies

Last week we got our first landscaping shipment! Our peonies were delivered in a little box inside two tiny plastic bags. I was completely weirded out when I saw the plants – they were bare root peonies and looked nothing like what I thought. I envisioned tiny baby plants that would go above ground, but these guys are supposed to be covered completely by soil (and good organic matter!!). As a person who likes instant satisfaction, this was a little frustrating for me – we won’t see anything from the peonies for another month or two, if at all! Typically you’re supposed to plant bare root peonies in the fall to guarantee survival. You can plant them in spring and they’ll turn out okay but there’s more of a chance that they won’t grow if you plant too late. So we’re hoping we beat the cutoff – only time will tell! For now, we just have some fertilizer on top of the soil and little wooden markers to remind us where the peonies are below the ground. Come on little guys! Come up and give us some pretty blooms! Vamos plantitas! Crezcan y tengan flores!!!

  1. Sounds great! Just make sure the “eyes” aren’t planted too deep. If you don’t see something peaking through in a couple of weeks, maybe expose just the eyes a little bit. Wishing you much success!

    • Thanks for the tip! We followed instructions and didn’t plant them deep at all. Hopefully something will come up, if not ill be brushing of some dirt to help them out if possible.

  3. did they come up? I was thinking of planting those. A very favorite of my mothers. They were everywhere on our property when I was growning up. I wish I had some now…
