Planting Pansies

On the same day that Javier and I planted the new little rose garden on the side of the house we also filled up the newly-empty half whiskey barrels with fresh potting soil and planted some suffering pansies. We came across the abandoned plants at Lowes while we were shopping for edging and other materials for the roses. The poor guys were on the clearance rack and not looking so great – they hadn’t been pruned and they were browning and wilted. Now, some of you may think that it’s because it’s winter, but pansies are actually hardy little guys that like their soil temperatures to be around 45 degrees (F). They can also handle frost, so it’s okay to plant them early in the year in Nashville (but not too early…and some folks may think we jumped the gun planting them in January but they’re doing great!).

El mismo dia que javier y yo plantamos las nuevas rosas en el jardin del lado de la casa, tambien llenamos los nuevos medios-barriles de whisky con tierra y plantamos varias pansies. Las encontramos semi abandonadas en Lowes cuando fuimos a comprar las orillas metalicas y otros materiales para las rosas. Pobrecitas estaban en la repisa de liquidacion, sin verse muy bien – no las habian podado y estaban decaidas y medias cafes. Ahora, aglunos de ustedes pueden pensar que es porque es invierno, pero las pansies son unas florcitas muy tozudas y pueden soportar bajas temperaturas de la tienrra donde han sido plantadas. Tambien pueden soportar heladas y escarcha, asi que esta bien si son plantadas a terminos del otono en Nashville (pero no muy pasado el otono …. mucha gente puede pensar que cometimos ese error pero la verdad es que estan muy bien y se ven muchisimos mejor!)

Anyway, we were on a roll with plants on clearance (remember – we bought those dormant rose bushes on sale too!) so we bought 8 pots full of these guys. They were on sale for $2 a pot down from $9! Since whiskey barrels were empty after removing the rose bushes, we decided to put the barrels on either side of the front porch and put the pansies in there. Hopefully by the middle of spring the barrels will look like they have a carpet of pansy blooms along the top! For now, they are stretching their roots and getting used to their new home. These are my mom’s favorite flowers and I remember her planting them every year growing up in Louisville, but the rabbits always ate the blooms. I figured with the blooms up in the barrel they should be pretty safe! We’ll post more photos as they grow. Welcome to the Los Rodriguez garden, little pansies!

Pero bueno, hemos hecho bien con las plantas en liquidacion (se acuerdan – compramos las rosas en liquidacion tambien!) asi que compramos 8 maseteros llenos de estas chiquititas. Estaban en liquidacion por $2 por planta cuando el precio anterior era $9! Ya que los barriles estaban vacios despues de mover las rosas, decidimos ponerlos al frente de la casa a cada lado del porch y plantar las pansies ahi. Esperamos que a medida que pase el tiempo las flores cubran los barrilles por completo con mas flores! Por ahora estan estirando sus raices y acomodandose a su nuevo hogar. Son una de las flores favoritas de mi mama, y me acuerdo que las plantaba cada ano cuando viviamos en Louisville, pero los conejos siempre se comian las flores. Pense, con las flores arriba en los barriles deberian mantenerse a salvo! Postearemos mas fotos mientras crecen. Bienvenidas a el jardin de los Rodriguez pansies!
