Liar’s Lodge

Ok, I swear, this is the very last Colorado installment. Javi and I really wanted to dedicate a whole post to the wonderful Liar’s Lodge, where we stayed for the first 4 nights of our week in CO, and to our lovely hosts Connie and Carl. Most of the plans we made were based on recommendations that we found online, so we hope that this post will send some new guests looking for lodging in Buena Vista over to the Liar’s Lodge. Javier found the Liar’s Lodge online and when we read the reviews we figured it was a definite. All of the reviews were positive, everyone said the beds were comfortable (which was our main criteria!) and the reviews for the breakfast food were also excellent (added bonus!). We had never been to a bed and breakfast and we joked that we were going to turn into Marshall and Lily from How I Met Your Mother – obsessed with B&Bs and always going off on a weekend escape. Well, not so much a joke anymore. If B&Bs are all like this, I can’t wait til our next B&B experience.

We knew this was going to be a great place to stay as soon as we pulled into the driveway. The lodge is set apart from the town so it’s slightly secluded but it’s just close enough to main street that you’re only a 5-minute drive from restaurants and shopping. The front porch of the lodge is facing the mountains and the back patio / deck looks down onto the river. The sound of the river is awesome – you can always hear the water because the windows are always open in the great room. And the great room is GREAT. You walk through the front door and into a gigantic room with floor to ceiling windows (and the ceilings HIGH) with a great view out onto the mountains. The room has a two-sided fireplace with couches, a little card table, and a kitchenette for guests on one side and two long tables where you eat breakfast on the other side. The kitchenette includes a sink, microwave and mini-fridge, which they keep stocked with beer and wine for the guests. The first one is on the house. Upstairs, where our room was, there is a little common area like a loft with a couch, TV and a rack of games (including scrabble!).

The rooms are huge! Or at least ours was – we didn’t see any others but I’m assuming. It had a king size bed, a loft with two twin beds and another mattress/couch. There’s a big bathroom and a closet inside the room. Every day someone came in to turn down the bed, which was an unexpected surprise. And yes, the bed was just as comfortable as the reviews promised. We had a beautiful view of the mountains from the window.

Every morning we’d wake up and go down to breakfast – Connie is a tremendous cook. They have an apple tree out front so the first day she picked a bunch of apples and made a loaf of apple bread with cranberries and nuts – I’d never had anything like it and I wanted the whole loaf for myself! They always had some kind of bread – muffins, a fresh loaf, biscuits, then there was a selection of fruit and two or three breakfast casseroles. It was amazing and there was always plenty for everyone. They also had a selection of teas and fresh coffee.

Javi and I can’t say enough about how great this place was. We felt like we were home there! Every day we were totally exhausted from all our excursions and we’d come back to the lodge and relax with wine or beer and play scrabble. We did that every night we were there and it was awesome. We scoped out a little house they have on the property where larger groups can stay and we are determined to go back with my parents and Ian and Andi soon!! If you are ever planning to visit Buena Vista, definitely go to the Liar’s Lodge, and say hi to Connie and Carl for us!

  2. This blog might be the best advertising Connie and Carl ever got. They should comp you for your entire stay. You could hardly pay for pics and testimonials of this quality. The place looks fantastic!
