This is a list, but it’s not exhaustive or in any particular order. This is a list how my mom facilitated some of my all-time favorite memories (check back for Javier’s list tomorrow!). |
- My mom helped me build my dream wedding. She spent hours sewing my veil, helping me stuff envelopes, putting glitter on candles and pine cones, negotiating with the caterer and lighting guy, helping figure out the bulletin and cleaning glass candle holders from goodwill, the list goes on. The wedding would not have been what it was without her, and it was my dream wedding in every way. She also walked me down the aisle with my dad and danced the night away at the reception. Does it get any better?!
|

that’s the veil she made me!

- My mom made me every costume I ever wanted to wear for Halloween when I was a kid. One year I wanted to be a jockey and she made me a fabulous silk jockey jersey – we still have it! She also made me an Ariel costume (Little Mermaid), a Super Leslie costume (I wanted to be a superhero like my brother), a cowgirl costume (she sewed fringe on my shirt) – etc. I don’t know if we EVER bought a costume from the store – she always made it and it was always perfect.
|

- My mom let me be ME. Always. She never insisted that I wear matching clothes (I never wanted to when I was in kindergarten), and she put up with me in 5th grade when I DESPERATELY wanted to find patent leather pants and a patent leather suit for graduation (…yeah. we found both). She also let me wear cowboy boots every day for about 6 years – even in the summer when it was too hot. So when I say I am who I am thanks in large part to my mom, I mean it!
|

- Every memory I have playing music with my dad growing up was thanks in large part to my mom’s behind-the-scenes work. She acted as our manager when I was in middle and high school, booking our shows at Brownings and other bars / restaurants around Louisville. She’d call the paper and make sure the date and time of every show was listed in the events section. Dad and I would never have had the fun we did had it not been for my mom acting as manager!
|

- Finally – mom used to read to me almost every night growing up. One of my chores was to fold the laundry and she would read to me for at least an hour every night while I folded laundry and ate a bowl of ice cream before bed. It is without a doubt one of my favorite childhood memories. She read out loud many books from the Redwall series, Lord of the Rings, Fannie Flagg, C.S. Lewis, at least the first 2 Harry Potter books. I LOVED those nights and I really hope my kids let me do the same someday!
