| We’ve tossed around the idea of starting a garden since we moved into our house, but with so many other projects spring and summer flew by last year so we had to wait until it was time to plant again. This is our very first garden – neither of us has any experience growing plants so it’s a total adventure. Lucky for us, the folks at Gardens of Babylon at the Nashville Farmer’s Market know everything about starting and maintaining a garden and they love to share their knowledge! | Hemos pensado en plantar una huerta desde que nos mudamos a esta casa, pero con tantos otros proyectos la primavera y el verano se pasaron volando asi que tuvimos que esperar hasta que la temporada de plantar volviera. | After a few pointers and ideas I got motivated to start our garden and join the ranks of folks who grow their own food. In this post I’ll tell you how I built the garden & what I used, then I’ll post about what I planted! We are so excited to see some veggies growing already! | Despues de un par de consejos e ideas, me motive a empezar nuestra huerta y unirnos al grupo de gente que cultiva su comida. En este post les contare como construi la huerta y que use, luego les contare lo que plante! Estamos muy contentos de ver algunos vegetales crecer! |
| I made 3 raised beds using (9) 2 x 8 x 8 lumber (pine). The beds are 4 x 8, giving us plenty of space to grow a ton of food. I know pine will rot eventually and is not bug resistant but I wanted to save some money. If I see the wood getting really bad I can easily replace the piece…I am sure it will last at least a couple of years! If you want to use the best wood for the job and spend a little more money, I recommend cedar. Anyway, I placed the beds on top of the grass in the spot in our yard that gets the most sunlight throughout the day. It’s also fairly level which helps with drainage. Once I placed the beds I put a layer of newspaper to cover the grass to speed up the decomposition process. The newspaper is biodegradable and will disintegrate with time so it wont harm the root growth. | Hize 3 camas usando pino de 2 x 8 x 8. Las camas son de 4 x 8 pies y se levantan 8 pulgadas, lo que nos da mucho espacio para cultivar un monton de comida. Se que el pino se va a podrir en algun minuto y que no es resistente a los bichos pero queria ahorrarme algo de plata. Si veo que la madera se esta poniendo muy mala puedo reemplazar la pieza…estoy seguro que durara unos cuantos anos! Si quieres usar una mejor madera y no te importa gastar mas, el cedro es lo mejor Pero bueno, puse las camas encima del pasto en el lugar del patio donde les llega la maxima cantidad de sol durante el dia. Tambien es mas o menos nivelado, lo que ayuda al drenage. Una vez que instale las camas, puse una capa de papel de diario para cubrir el pasto y apurar el proceso de descomposicion. El papel de diario es biodegradable y se desintegrara con el tiempo asi que no afectara el crecimiento de las raices. |
| I filled the beds with a mix of soil conditioner, cow manure, landscape soil, and top soil. I worked with Brooks from Gardens of Babylon to figure out the right mix of soil to provide the best environment for the plants. I didn’t have ANY soil to put in the beds so I had to buy a bunch of bags. This will be an investment since in the following seasons I will only need to re-condition the soil before planting and we can do that by composting during the winter. Soil can get expensive, so I only filled up 2 of the 3 beds to start. Once I figure out what I want to grow in the third bed I’ll take another trip to the nursery for more soil. | Llene las camas con una mezcla de condicionador de tierra, excremento de vaca, tierra de hoja, y tierra para la superficie. Trabaj con Brooks, de Gardens of Babylon para ver que mezcla seria la mejor para crear el mejor ambiente para las plantas. No tenia NADA de tierra para poner en las camas asi que tuve que comprar un monton de bolsas. Esto sera una inversion ya que en las proximas temporadas solo necesitare recondicionar la tierra y puedo hacer eso durante el invierno haciendo una composta. Buena tierra puede ser algo cara, asi que llene solo 2 de las 3 camas para comenzar. Una vez que sepamos que queremos plantar en la tercera, hare otro viaje para comprar tierra. |
| One last thing – DO NOT use roundup to kill weeds around the area where you want to plant – especially if you’re planning on planting food you want to EAT. That stuff is poison, it’s not healthy for you or the environment. So don’t make the mistake we made!! Someone told us to use it in the area where we want to plant and we followed this person’s advice and now we have a gigantic wasteland of dead earth in the back corner of the yard. When we told the people at Gardens of Babylon they were horrified! They are one of only 5% of nurseries in the country that sells, plants and advises everything organic. They couldn’t believe we used RoundUp – so don’t make our mistake!! | Una ultima cosa, NUNCA usen Round Up para matar las malezas en el area donde quieres plantar – especialmente si planeas en plantar vegetales que comeras. Esa cosa es veneno, no es bueno no para ti ni para el medio ambiente. Asi que no cometan el error que cometimos nosotros! Alguien nos dijo que lo usaramos en el area donde queriamos plantar, y nosotros seguimos el consejo y ahora tenemos un cuadrado de naturaleza muerta en el patio. Les contamos a la gente de Garden’s of Babylon y estaban aterrorizados! Ellos son parte del 5% porciento de negocios de plantas en el pais que vende, planta, y aconseja usar todo organico. No podian creer que usamos Round Up – asi que no cometan el mismo error!! |
