| So we all know that I’m a winter person and that I’d always, hands down, pick a long winter over a long summer. I hate the insects, sweat and unbearable heat, among other things, that come with the dog days of summer. In Nashville, the “dog days” pretty much last for 4 straight months – sultry, steamy, oppressive heat. Let me be clear: just because I like winter does not mean that I’m bummed out about this freakishly delightful weather in February. I don’t feel like I’m being robbed of my “favorite” season – I said I’d pick winter over summer, but I’ll take a long, lovely spring any day over 30 degree weather. The only thing that would seriously bum me out is if this beautiful, unusual, early spring weather is really signaling an even longer and hotter summer. I’ll be really bummed, for example, if this weather means it’ll be 90 degrees by March 1.Anyway, for now the dogs are happy to roll around outside and bask in the sun on their porches (as long as its not raining like it is right now) and Javi and I are spending time on our porch again too. I’ve got the windows open in the office right now and it’s still chilly enough for a steaming cup of coffee. It’s perfect, and if I could keep the 40 degrees of a morning, 65 degrees of an afternoon type weather for a few more months, that’d be awesome! | Todos sabemos que soy una persona que le gusta el invierno y que siempre prefiero un invierno largo que un verano largo. Me cargan los bichos, el sudor y el tremendo calor, entre otras cosas que vienen con los dias de verano. En Nashville esos dias duran mas o menos 4 meses seguido – calores infernales. Dejenme decirles; solo por que me gusta el invierno no significa que estoy triste por tener estos dias de tiempo espectacular en Febrero. No siento que me hayan robado mi estacion del ano favorita – dije que preferia invierno sobre verano, pero prefiero mil veces una larga primavera en vez de temperaturas bajo cero. La unica cosa que me pone muy triste es pensar que este tiempo tan lindo, inusual, y temprano en la temporada, es una senal de que el verano sera largo y caluroso. Estare muy triste sip or ejemplo, tenemos 30 grados el primero de Marzo. Pero bueno, por ahora los perros estan felices, revolcandose en la tierra y tomando sol en sus porches (mientras no llueva como ahora) y Javi y yo estamos pasando algo de tiempo en el porch de nosotros tambien. Tengo las ventanas abiertas en la oficina y todavia esta fresco como para tomar una taza caliente de café. Es perfecto, y si pudiera mantener el tiempo con las mananas en los 15 grados y las tardes en los 25, seria muy genial! |
| It was last year around this time that Javi and I first looked at the house. I know it was a few weeks later, actually, because the flowers around the house were already blooming. When we pulled up to the driveway the first time we visited the house, buttercups lined the driveway and the front of the yard – a perfect welcome. Tulips are among my favorite flowers and the previous owner had tulips and buttercups everywhere – but kind of in an ad hoc way that didn’t make much sense. We later discovered that all of the bricks she used to create flower beds sank deep into the dirt (remember Javi had to pull these out for our walkway?) so the flowers were just kind of sitting in different patches around the yard without anything to demarcate the beds. Before we got the fence in the backyard we kept Chupete tethered (only for an hour at a time, with plenty of water!) outside in front so he could run around, and he destroyed the front flower bed and pretty much dug up all the tulips and buttercups (he didn’t eat them, just dug ’em up). We thought Javi took care of the rest when he demolished the overgrown weeds and dug up a million different plants on the side of the house – we loved the tulips and buttercups but we thought we’d start over this year with our own garden. | El ano pasado mas o menos en esta fecha fue cuando Javi y yo vimos por primera vez la casa. Se que fue solo unas semanas despues, en realidad, porque las flores estaban germinando. Cuando estacionamos en la casa por primera vez, las flores bordeaban el camino y el patio del frente – una bienvenida perfecta. Los tulipanes son unas de mis flores favoritas y la duena anterior tenia tulipanes plantados por todos lados! – pero de manera desordenada que no tenia sentido para nosotros. Despues nos dimos cuenta que los ladrillos que ella habia usado para bordear los lechos de flores, se habian hundido en la tierra (se acuerdan que Javi tuvo que desenterrar un monton ?) asi que las flores se habian movido un poco o simplemente no habia delineacion. Antes de poner la reja en el patio de atras, poniamos a Chupete en el patio del frente con una cuerda (solo por un poco rato y siempre con mucha agua!) asi podia corer y jugar, y termino destrozando todas las plantas que habian ye incluso desenterro algunos bulbos (no se los comia, solo los desenterraba). Pensamos que Javi se habia encargado del resto cuando saco todas las malesas y plantas que habia crecido de manera loca en el lado de la casa – nos encantan las flores pero pensamos que empezar nuestro propio jardin seria mas gratificante y ordenado. |

| Well, it looks like we’re actually going to just wait and see what it is that we have growing in our yard now that the weeds are gone, because it looks like we’ve got some determined plants that are going to come back whether we like it or not. The plants around our house are just as confused as we are about the seasons right now, and we’ve got buds and plants popping up all over the place to add a little color to our somewhat-dreary yard. We’ll still probably wind up re-doing the landscaping over the course of the spring/summer, but it’s always nice to have a few unexpected flowers! I just hope we don’t get another freeze and everything up and dies on us! For now, I’ll get photos of them as they bloom…It’s always exciting to see the first colorful signs of spring! | Bueno, parece que vamos a tener que esperar par aver que es lo que esta creciendo en nuestro jardin ahora que las malesas se han ido, porque parece que tenemos alguna plantas muy determinadas a volver a brotar lo queramos o no. Las plantas en la casa estan tan confundidas con el tiempo como lo estamos nosotros, y tenemos platas brotando por todos lados, lo que le da un poco de vida y color a nuestro triste jardin. Igual vamos a tener que re-hacer el jardin en algun momento, pero es bueno tener algunas flores inesperadas! Solo espero que no tengamos otro dia bajo cero que congele todo y lo haga morir! Por ahora sacare fotos mientras brotan….es siempre entretenido ver las primeras senales coloridas de la primavera! |
