Cowboys and Huasos

Yesterday Javi and I spent the day as tourists in our own city. We went to Room in the Inn for a couple hours to do a tour of the new building – Macarena is a social worker in Chile and was hoping to take some of the ideas from RITI back to Santiago. It’s such an incredible place – if you’re a Nashvillian and haven’t heard much about RITI, please take a look at their website and check out all the amazing things they are doing in our city. After RITI we went to Javier’s office to give his family a tour of the building where he works. Country music for the most part doesn’t make it all the way to Chile, but Paula and Maca are certainly familiar with Taylor Swift and Lady Antebellum (in fact, Lady Antebellum is Maca’s favorite band) so it was fun to show them around the CMT building. After CMT we took a pit stop at Jacks – you really can’t have the whole Nashville experience without at least one meal at Jack’s barbecue on Broadway. His mom actually remembered Jack’s from their last trip to Nashville so she was especially excited to get back to try the bbq sauce again. After lunch and a trip to various trinket stores where they bought all their Nashville gadgets, we had planned to go to Robert’s to hear some music but we decided to come back at night instead to hear the Don Kelley band. One of the best things about Nashville in January and February is that there are hardly any tourists downtown, especially on weeknights, so we were able to grab two tables up front easily for the music. The Don Kelley band plays a mix of everything but mostly covers of songs from the 50s and 60s. Their guitar and slap bass players are just incredible – it actually felt really weird that we were watching them in such an empty Roberts – usually when we go see them the place it totally packed. Again, it’s definitely the off-season for Nashville tourism.

The whole day was centered around living the tourist Nashville experience – up until now Javier’s family has done basically everything with us that we normally do on our own. This day was a day to do the things we only do when guests come to town – and it’s good for us to go out and enjoy the music every now and then on Broadway. All in all a great day! Otro dia lindo!
