Los Rodriguez Anniversary

It’s our 2-year wedding anniversary! Happy day!

Es nuestro segundo aniversario! Feliz dia!!

Our engagement story is kind of funny, and worth telling before I post anything about our wedding, which I’ll do tomorrow. Javi and I both volunteered for a local Vacation Bible School in the summer of 2009, and on our way to that afternoon’s VBS session he and I started talking about marriage, and before I knew it the conversation had traveled much farther than it usually did when we brought up the subject. I remember sitting there thinking to myself what on earth just happened, and then asking Javi…”so…are we engaged now?” – to which we both decided that yes, we were going to get married, but he didn’t want me to tell anyone until he had done a “cool proposal.”

The next day we told my dad and brother, but we kept it a secret from my mom and grandma. That night we all went out to Cinco de Mayo for margaritas and as soon as we got them, we made a toast “to the future Los Rodriguez family!” I got a fabulous photo of their reaction to the surprise – it was well worth waiting to tell them.

Of course, Javier still hadn’t done his “cool proposal.” My grandma had given him her wedding ring to give to me and we went and had it cleaned and resized to fit, but he wouldn’t let me have it until he officially proposed. I think I waited about 2 weeks. In late June, I went to New York to visit my friend Nikita, one of my roommates in college and one of the bridesmaids in our wedding.ย The night I got home from New York, Javier and I were relaxing and watching TV when my mom called and invited us over because “she wanted to see my photos from New York.” When we got to my parents house, my dad suggested a game of Apples to Apples, which should have been suspicious because usually we are the ones convincing him to play, but I didn’t think twice about it.

About 10 rounds into the game, while my mom and I were perusing dresses on OnceWed.com, Javi announced that it was my turn. I’m not going to go into the rules of the game, but suffice it to say that when I turned around Javi flipped over one of the green cards and it said “Leslie, Will You Marry Me?” – it was a complete and total shock. Then he told me to look in my hand at my red cards and he had slipped a card in my hand that said “YES!!!!!!” – it was perfect. He had to figure out a good surprise since he knew I was expecting the proposal, and his plan definitely worked. My parents already knew what was going to happen so they went in the other room and brought in balloons and margaritas they had ready for the occasion. It was a totally original proposal, and a pretty good window into who we are as a couple.

Check back tomorrow for a short, or as short as I can make it, version of our firstย wedding.
