Last week one of my closest friends Camila came to visit me and Javier for a couple of days with her boyfriend Bruno. Camila is ALWAYS on vacation (she’s Brazilian and Brazilians get 30 days of paid vacation and many more holidays than we get, so this was a 20 day trip for her but only about 10 of those days count toward her paid vacation days! ridiculous) so she and Bruno made a stop in Nashville on their way to Disneyworld from New York. They were only here from Tuesday til Thursday, but we have to take any amount of time we can get with each other since it’s pretty rare that she’s in the U.S and even more rare for me to be in Brazil (I’ve only been once back in 2008!).
Camila and I met in 2006 in Santiago de Compostela, Spain. We both studied abroad together in Santiago for about 6 months and I can safely say it was one of the best experiences of both of our lives. When we get together we always start dreaming about our lives back in Santiago – completely carefree, learning Spanish (and Portuguese for me!) and traveling through Spain together, meeting new friends, playing music in parque Bonaval, going on weekend excursions, etc. etc. It was truly an experience of a lifetime.

Camila and I didn’t see each other again until I went to visit her in São Paulo, Brazil in 2008. I stayed with her family for a few days but I didn’t get to spend nearly enough time with her, so I was THRILLED in 2009 when she told me she was going to attend our wedding in Chile. To this day I can’t believe she made that trip to our wedding! She arrived at Javier’s house on Christmas day in 2009 and our wedding was the day after. Last April (2010) she came to visit Nashville for a whole week which gave me ample time to show her what most Brazilians who visit the United States don’t get to experience (let’s be honest, how many Brazilians [or any foreigners for that matter], given the option, come to visit Nashville of all places??), so we went honky tonking, to meat & threes, drove down Natchez trace, hiked around Radnor Lake and visited local breweries.

This past week was my first time seeing Camila since that last visit so even though it was brief it was still great to see her again and to finally meet her boyfriend. Bruno was awesome and I think he enjoyed meeting Chupi and Chori and seeing a little bit of Nashville. He especially loved the Family Wash’s Shepherd’s Pie (mmmm) and the mac & cheese at the Pied Piper, so if nothing else he at least approves of our southern cookin!

The great thing about Camila is that even though we go months without seeing each other we can always pick up pretty much exactly where we left off. We’ve already proven that international friendships can last, thanks in no small part to the convenience of the internet! Our friendship has spanned 5 years and we’ve spent time together on 3 continents in 4 different countries. I’m lucky to have such a good friend despite the distance and I know I’ll see her again soon! Until then, facebook and skype will have to suffice.
