A few weeks ago, we noticed a little pink dot in Choripan’s chin. At the time it just looked like a pimple or a little scar, but as the week went on the little dot turned into a bigger dot, and more dots showed up around the lips. A week later …. our cute puppy had nasty looking warts all over his mouth. We did some research online and found out that Chori seemed to have Canine Papilloma Virus, a benign kind of warts that grow in the soft tissue of young and old dogs when their immune systems are not fully developed or weakened. He was due for a check-up anyways so the vet confirmed our findings, he will be ok and no treatment is needed since the warts disappear by themselves……in about 5 months!!!!
That seemed like a ridiculous amount of time but to remove the warts the dog has to be put under anesthesia and sometimes even after being removed they could come back. So since he didn’t act like they bothered him, we just left them there and kept a close eye on their growth. He looks pretty gross and can’t play with other dogs to avoid spreading the virus (Chupete’s immune system is strong enough to fight the virus so he hasn’t gotten anything). He even had to be put in isolation last time we put him in a kennel while we were in Chicago.
Suddenly everything turned pretty bad – a wart started growing in his lower eye lid in the left eye. He is about to get fixed (as in, neutered) so when we took him to get blood work for the surgery we asked the vet to take a look at his eye. The doctor planned to remove it the day of the surgery (in a week) so that made us feel better. But the wart started small and as it grew Choripan started to feel it and rub it and scratch it…now our poor puppy has conjunctivitis in both eyes PLUS a wart! He looked so messed up that we had to take him to the vet again and tried to schedule his surgery earlier.
He is now waiting for his surgery (Friday) taking antibiotics for his eyes and warts and wearing the cone of shame. Poor guy, he keeps hitting everything around him, can barely walk and looks just miserable…..we feel so bad for him. But his spirit remains strong, he found the positive side and discovered that he can use the cone to his advantage. He is practically wearing a shield against Chupete, and Chupete is terrified of the cone…his brother has turned into an alien and he doesn’t want to be close to it at all!!!! Chori is having fun terrorizing his brother…PAYBACK!!!!!!!!! Also Chori figured that he can put his head down, cover whatever he is chewing…bones, sticks, chew toys…and Chupete has no chance to steal it from him. Anyways, Friday is the big day… No eye wart, no balls, no more conjunctivitis…..we hope he gets better soon and can join his brother in the yard…he misses him….A LOT!

I bet Choripan’s actually gonna miss that cone when Chupete starts beating him up again. 🙂
[…] our weeks are always crazy. This week was especially off-the-charts busy and exhausting, thanks to Choripan’s 3 trips to the vet and the sleep I lost worrying about him, the homework and reading and 40 essays I graded, […]
