John’s Place – Roscoe Village

This past Wednesday my mom and I left for Chicago to spend a few days with Andrea before Ian and Javier arrived on Friday. When we got in town on Wednesday Andrea was still working so my mom and I walked around Roscoe Village and stopped by a little restaurant called John’s Place for dinner. Before I get write a post about Chicago outings and entertainment, I want to dedicate a post to this marvelous little restaurant. We went in and got a little table next to the front window and ordered hummus to split and two cups of gumbo. Our server brought out some delicious bread with a flavored butter followed shortly thereafter by our beers. Their beer selection was extensive and my mom and I picked the one with the highest alcohol content (this is the kind of thing I look for after flying – which is not fun at all for me). We wound up with Lagunitas “Little Sumpin’ Sumpin’” – and it became our beer choice for the weekend. We wound up getting two six packs afterward!

Este pasado Miércoles mi mama y yo salimos rumbo a Chicago para pasar unos días con Andrea antes que Ian y Javi llegaran el viernes. Cuando arribamos el miércoles, Andrea todavía estaba en el trabajo asi que mama y yo paseamos por Roscoe Village y pasamos a un restaurant llamado John’s Place para cenar. Antes de hablar sobre lo que hicimos en Chicago y como nos divertimos, quiero dedicar un post a este maravilloso restaurant. Entramos y nos dieron una mesita al lado de la ventana y pedimos hummus para compartir y dos bowls de gumbo. Nuestro mesero nos trajo un pan delicioso con mantequilla de sabores que estaba espectacular, seguido por nuestras cervezas. La selección de cervezas era extensiva y mi mama y yo escogimos la que tenía el mayor grado alcohólico (eso es lo que necesito después de volar – lo que no disfruto). Terminamos con la cerveza Lagunitas “ Little Sumpin’ Sumpin’” – y se convirtió en la cerveza elegida para el fin de semana. Terminamos comprando 2 packs de 6 antes de irnos!

Anyway, while we were waiting for our food I went outside and took a photo of the front of the restaurant thinking that I’d blog about it, and then I met the owner of the restaurant (named John – surprise!) on the way back in. He came over to our table and chatted with us for awhile – made sure our gumbo and hummus were as delicious as they should be (and they WERE) and then ordered us a dessert on him. So – have I mentioned this is my new favorite restaurant in Roscoe Village? Not only was our gumbo delectable, the prices were right, the atmosphere was inviting and the service was delightful. Before I forget – the dessert we ordered on the house was a blondie with ice cream and caramel on top – oh my gosh. You can’t imagine how hard it was for me and mom to share that! I wanted three to myself.

Pero bueno, mientras esperábamos por nuestra comida yo fui afuera y saque algunas fotos del restaurant pensando que escribiría algo en el blog, y luego conocí al dueño del restaurant (llamado John – sorpresa!) cuando volví adentro. El vino a nuestra mesa a conversar un ratito – se aseguró que el gumbo y el hummus estaban deliciosos como debería estar (y lo estaba) y luego nos regaló un postre. Así que – he mencionado ya que este es mi nuevo restaurante favorito en Roscoe Village? No solo el gumbo estaba delicioso, los precios eran correctos y la atmosfera muy acogedora pero también el servicio fue un placer. Antes que me olvide – el postre que nos dieron fue helado rubio con caramelo – ay dios mío. No saben lo difícil que fue para mí y mi mama compartir eso! Yo quería 3 para mi sola.

John’s Place left such an impression that we decided to go back the next day. All we wanted was another round of the gumbo but the special was a turkey sandwich with goat cheese and roasted apples…so we decided to split that instead with a side of cooked spinach. I’d never had a sandwich like that before but I’m glad we tried it – delicious!! I highly highly recommend a trip to John’s Place if you’re in Roscoe Village. We loved it and we’ll definitely be back the next time we’re visiting Ian and Andrea!

John’s place dejo una muy buena impresión, tanto así que decidimos volver al día siguiente. Todo lo que queríamos era otra ronda de gumbo pero como el especial era sándwich de pavo con queso de cabra y manzanas rostizadas….decidimos compartir eso en vez del gumbo y agregamos un acompañamiento de espinaca. Nunca había comido un sándwich como ese y estoy feliz de haberlo probado – delicioso!! Les recomiendo que visiten John’s Place si están en Roscoe Village. Nos encantó y sin duda volveremos la próxima vez que visitemos a Ian y Andrea!
