Time to celebrate!

Sometimes, it’s best to just find things to celebrate to a) not feel guilty about having some fun (you’re celebrating something! It must be legitimate!) and b) to force yourself to enjoy a day, or even a few hours, off. Over the last few days, we’ve found some things to celebrate. Javier had a long weekend last week, which mean Friday and Monday off, and that is certainly something to celebrate. On Saturday, after a full day of work and more progress than I expected on a paper, Javier and I decided to go out to eat at 5 Points Pizza to celebrate the almost-end-of-the-semester. Also important: we didn’t have any food in the house. When I asked for 1/2 no cheese, our poor waitress must not have recognized the “brain half dead” look in my eyes – she told me they had vegan cheese now and I brushed her off saying “no no it’s a lactose thing,” Idiot me – of course vegan cheese wouldn’t have lactose in it – but the customer is always right, right? She gave me a look like I was crazy and walked away – I realized my stupid mistake 5 minutes later and had a good laugh explaining my slowness when she came back. I didn’t try the vegan, lactose-free cheese, but our pizza was delicious as usual. We love that place.

A veces es mejor encontrar cosas para celebrar para así a) no sentirse culpable por pasarlo bien (estas celebrando algo! Tiene que ser necesario y legitimo!) y b) para forzarte a disfrutar del día, o al menos unas horas, libres. Los últimos días hemos encontrado algunas cosas para celebrar. Javier tuvo un fin de semana largo, Viernes y Lunes libres, y eso es algo para celebrar. El Sábado, después de un día lleno de trabajo y mas progreso de lo que esperaba, Javier y yo decidimos ir a 5 Points Pizza a celebrar el casi final del semestre. También importante: No teníamos comida en casa. Cuando pedi por mitad de la pizza sin queso, nuestra pobre mesera seguro no reconoció mis ojos de “cerebro medio muerto” – me dijo que tenían queso vegano y yo le dije que no que era un problemas con la lactosa. Idiota yo – claro que el queso vegano no tiene lactosa! – pero el cliente siempre tiene la razón, verdad? Me miro como si estuviera medio loca y se fue – me di cuenta de mi error 5 minutos después y me rei mucho explicándole lo lenta que soy cuando ella volvió. No probé el queso vegano, sin lactosa, pero nuestra pizza estaba deliciosa como siempre. Nos encanta ese lugar.

On Sunday, we celebrated advent and music at Second Presbyterian Church. This past Sunday was their choral Christmas celebration, complete with a small orchestra (10 women!). It was beautiful – exactly what I needed before spending the rest of the day putting the final touches on my final paper. On Monday, after turning in my final paper, Javi and I celebrated the fact that he had Monday off and that I just turned in my last term paper EVER with a night out to the Blair School of Music to hear the Curb Youth Symphony. It was awesome! They played one beautiful Christmas movement and a few other incredible pieces – I loved it. Those were some very talented kids, and the concert was free! Speaking of talented, one of the harpists is our friend’s daughter. She had a few quick spotlight solos and they were gorgeous – the whole time we listened for the harp. What a beautiful, soothing sound! I’d love a recording of her playing.

El Domingo, celebramos adviento y música en la Iglesia Segunda Presbiteriana. Este pasado Domingo fue su celebración de Navidad con el coro, completado con una mini orquesta (10 mujeres!). Fue precioso – exactamente lo que necesitaba antes de pasar el resto del dia dándole los toques finales a mis ensayos. El Lunes, luego de entregar mis ensayos finales, Javi y celebramos que el tenia el dia libre y que yo había entregado el ultimo papel del semestre (POR SIEMPRE) con una noche en la escuela de música Blair en Vanderbilt para escuchar a la Sinfonía Juvenil Curb. Fue increíble! Tocaron algunas piezas de Navidad junto con otras piezas muy impresionantes – me encanto. Es un grupo de jóvenes muy talentosos, y el concierto era gratuito! Hablando de talentosos, una de las niñas que tocaba el harpa era la hija de una amiga. Tuvo un par de momentos donde solo toco ella y le salieron preciosos – durante todo el tiempo le pusimos atención al harpa. Que sonido mas lindo y relajante! Me encartaría tener una grabación de su música.

Tuesday was a rough, rough day for me – gone are the days of turning in final papers and enjoying a couple weeks off before it all starts over again! But I was a little delusional about my freedom and very much expected the same sweet release that comes with crossing the final deadline. So, I was hoping to take Tuesday off…and wound up working on other projects that don’t respect the long-gone expectations that come with the words “winter break.” Still, it’s a beautiful thing to be able to work from home all day with the dogs, and I got over it soon enough because on Wednesday, Javi and I took a couple hours off in the evening after another long day of work to celebrate our 3-year anniversary! We went to the Silly Goose – I love that place – and then to Jeni’s ice cream afterward. If you live in Nashville, go to Jeni’s and get the boozy eggnog flavor! You’ll thank me later.

coEl Martes fue difícil, difícil para mi – los días de entregar los papeles finales y disfrutar de un par de semanas libres se han ido! Pero estaba alucinando con la idea de estar libre una vez terminado mis papeles, esperaba tener esa libertad y el dulce sentimiento que se tiene una vez que las fechas finales han pasado. Así que esperaba tener el día libre…pero termine trabajando en toros proyectos que no respetan las palabras “vacaciones de invierno”. Aun así, es lindo poder quedarse en casa todo el día con los perros, y me olvide de lo ocupada que estaba porque el Miércoles Javi y yo nos tomamos algunas horas para celebrar nuestro tercer aniversario de matrimonio, después de un largo día!! Fuimos al Silly Goose – nos encanta ese lugar – y después pasamos a Jeni’s Ice Cream a tomar helados. Si viven en Nashville, tienen que ir a Jeni’s y probar el sabor Boozy Eggnog! Me lo agradecerán después.

So really, it may not work for everyone but finding little things to celebrate has turned out great for me this week! Even if it’s just celebrating a long day of work and progress with a Christmas movie on the couch with Javi and the dogs. And let me say again – 3 years for us!!! Woohoo! Incluso solo celebrando un día largo de trabajo y progreso con una película navideña en el sofá con Javi y los perros. Y déjenme decirlo de nuevo – 3 anos para nosotros! Woohoo!
