Making the most of the weekend

We’re so excited for this weekend – it’s the first completely free weekend we’ve had in a long, long time. No plans, no schedule – and we’ll probably focus all of our time on work, but it’ll be nice to be able to sleep a few extra hours and wear sweatpants all day long. Last weekend was a totally different story. It was a very, very busy (and superb) weekend. On Friday we spent the evening at Second Presbyterian Church for the Monster Mash fundraiser, switching back and forth between watching the live stream of the #Latism awards and hanging out with the rest of our church friends in the cafe while the Beach Comb-overs played tunes like the Monster Mash and Brown Eyed Girl. Next year we are DEFINITELY dressing up for this. This is the second year of the Monster Mash fundraiser and we should’ve planned ahead to have a costume since we missed out last year, but we totally forgot. There were ghostbusters, devils (irony abounds!), little red riding hood, Lucy from I Love Lucy (with vitameatavegamin!) and many other creative getups. There was also a ton of good food and I got up to sing a few tunes with the Comb-overs – always a blast! It was a really fun evening.

Estamos muy emocionados por el fin de semana – es el primer fin de seman a completamente libre que hemos tenido en mucho, mucho tiempo. Sin planes, sin agenda – y lo mas seguro es que lo pasemos todo poniéndonos al dia en cosas del trabajo y los estudios, pero va a ser rico poder dormir unas horas mas y vestir pijamas todo el dia. El fin de semana pasado fue completamente distinto. Fue súper, super ocupado. El viernes pasamos la tarde en la iglesia Second Presbyterian para un show benéfico llamado Monster Mash, cambiando entre mirar los premios #Latism y pasar el rato con la gente de la congregación en el cafe mientras los Beach Comb-overs tocaban canciones como Monster Mash y Brown Eyed Girl. El proximo ano nos disfrazaremos sin duda. Este es el segundo ano de este show benéfico y deberiamos haber planeado con anticipación el disfraz ya que nos lo perdimos el ano pasado, pero se me olvido. habian caza-fantasmas, diablos (ironico en la iglesia!), caperucita roja, Lucy de Yo Amo a Lucy, y mucho otros muy creativos. Tambien había un montón de comida y pude cantar algunas canciones con los Comb-Overs – siempre muy divertido! Fue una tarde entretenida.

On Saturday morning Javi and I met up with Melanie, Steve and little AC at Cheekwood for the Dia de los Muertos celebration! We hadn’t been since AC was just learning to walk (2 years before) and she’s just so big and awesome now. She was telling us about her stuffed cat Trina (pronounced Try-nuh) and her Ariel halloween costume, which is crazy because I was Ariel too for halloween once when I was a kid. The Little Mermaid lives on…

El Sabado en la mañana Javi y yo nos juntamos con Melanie, Steve, y la pequena AC en Cheekwood para la celebracion del dia de los muertos! No habiamos ido desde que AC apenas caminaba (2 anos atras) y ahora esta tan grande y genial. Nos conto sobre su gato de peluche Trina y su disfraz de Sirenita, lo que es de locos porque yo tambien fui Ariel para halloween una vez cuando era niña. La sirenita nunca muere…

I brought my camera to Cheekwood and I took a ton of photos of all the dancers. I almost didn’t bring my camera but Javi encouraged me to bring it along in case I’d regret it – he knows me very well. I definitely would have regretted it. I also bought some of Conexion Americas’ Rumba Roast coffee and I’m telling you, if you live in Nashville you should definitely buy your coffee from them. Bongo Java roasts it, it’s made specifically for Conexion and it’s so tasty! I can’t believe it took me this long to finally buy a bag of it but now I know better.

lleve mi camara a Cheekwood y saque un monton de fotos de los bailarines. Casi no lleve mi camara pero Javi me convencio en llevarla en caso que me arrepintiera – me conoce muy bien. Me hubiese arrepentido sin duda. Tambien pude comprar cafe Rumba de Conexion Americas y les digo, si viven en Nashville deben comprar ese cafe. Bongo Java lo hornea y es hecho especifico para Conexión, es delicioso! No puedo creer que me tomo todo este tiempo para por fin comprar una bolsa, ahora se.

On Saturday night Javi and I went to my girlfriend Nikita’s engagement party. Nikita was my roommate for three years in college and I am SO excited that she and Jordan are tying the knot! It was a great Belmont reunion at the party too – we got to hang out and catch up with a ton of friends that we usually see plenty of during the summer by the pool but didn’t get to this year because I spent the summer holed up writing my thesis. So it was a great night getting to celebrate Nikita and Jordan and see old friends…not to mention the party was in a GIGANTIC house with open bars, an incredible buffet and a DJ in a hidden alcove on the 2nd floor. Oh, and of course a movie theater. Let’s not forget that little detail…

El Sabado en la noche, Javi y yo fuimos a la fiesta de compromiso de mi amiga Nikita. Ella fue mi companera de casa durante 3 anos en la universidad y estoy muy emocionada de verla a ella y Jordan casándose! Fue una gran reunión de Belmont también – pudimos ponernos al día con un montón de amigos que normalmente solo en el verano en la piscina pero este ano no pudimos juntarnos porque mi tesis me tenia atada. Asi que fue una noche genial celebrando a Nikita y Jordan y viendo a viejos amigos…sin mencionar que la fiesta fue en esta casa gigante con bar abierto, mucha comida, un DJ escondido en una alcoba del segundo piso. Oh, y claro, una sala de cine. No nos olvidemos de ese pequeno detalle…

And finally, on Sunday night Javier and I met up with mom and dad to eat sushi downtown before I headed to the Ryman with mom and dad to see / hear Bonnie Raitt. I can’t put into words how incredible that concert was. I grew up listening to Bonnie Raitt and, even though she has a brand new album out, she still played almost every single one of my favorite old songs of hers. To top it off, she brought John Prine out to sing Angel from Montgomery with her – and I was sobbing the whole time. It was an AMAZING night to cap off a really fun weekend!

Y finalmente, el Domingo en la noche, javier y yo nos juntamos con mis papas para comer sushi en el centro antes de salir rumbo al Ryman para ver el show de Bonnie Raitt y, a pesar de que ella tiene un album nuevo, toco casi todas mis canciones favoritas de su repertorio antiguo. Y la guinda de la torta, trajo a John Prine para cantar junto con ella Angel from montgomery – yo lloraba todo el rato. Fue INCREIBLE, y la noche perfecta para cerrar el entretenido fin de semana!
