Javier and I are finally expanding our food & beverage horizons in Louisville. Last year we found a handful of go-to favorite spots (Vietnam Kitchen, Third Turn Brewery, Oishii Sushi, Havana Rumba, Mussel Burger Bar) and stuck to what we knew was good. Then we stopped going out to eat for awhile; sitting in a restaurant during my first trimester was a gamble because seeing other people’s food made me sick. Later, with the moving and expenses that go along with it we stuck to eating mostly at home or quick, cheap Panera-type meals when we needed a break. We’ve heard so much about the Louisville food scene and how much it has grown over the last decade that it seemed a shame not to experience it, so over the last couple of weeks we’ve taken one night a weekend to try out some new Yelp recommendation.

This weekend I saw two different instagram posts about Monnik Beer Company from two people who don’t know each other, so I figured it was the universe telling me that Javier and I should try it. Monnik is close to downtown in Schnitzelburg near Slugger Field where we were heading for the Louisville City FC game. It’s not easy going to a brewery in the summer while pregnant…a nice cold beer sounds SO GOOD and I just can’t enjoy a whole one for myself. But Javier ordered a flight of samples and I tried a sip of each. Javi tends to like the lighter beers, while I love the smooth porters and stouts. This brewery has a delicious selection of both that they make on site, and we highly recommend all of them! The in-house brews that we tried were excellent.

They also make their own focaccia-style bread and beer cheese which blew our minds. We split the beer cheese / bread app and a shepherd’s pie (pork and black currant pie with potato & sweet potato mash and gravy). All of it was great and we’ll definitely be back!

After dinner we headed over to Slugger Field to cheer on Louisville City FC, Louisville’s Division 2 professional soccer team. We love going to these games, and if you’re ever thinking of visiting Louisville I *highly* recommend scheduling your trip around a home game so you can experience it for yourself. By far the best part is sitting in the general admission “supporter” section with the crazy fans. The most dedicated group dresses up in festive purple and gold outfits and face paint, there are drummers and people leading a series of cheers – pure entertainment. We won 3-0 on Saturday, so everyone was in an especially good mood (after the third goal Javier and I got a beer shower from the person behind us who couldn’t contain herself). Between the good food, beverages, and a win for LCFC it was a great Louisville Saturday night!
