| Back in March 2008 when Javier and I had only been dating about a month we took a trip from Nashville to Louisville so he could meet my high school friends at the St. Patty’s Parade. Back then the parade was an excuse to go bar hopping on Bardstown Road during the day dressed in weird green outfits, and almost 10 years later the parade hasn’t changed much! On that occasion it was freezing cold and raining, so we stayed inside at Wick’s pizza for most of the parade. I remember one truck rolling by with green tinsel on it and there wasn’t much else, and Javi raised his eyebrows and asked “that’s it? that’s Louisville’s parade?” – yep. It was superb. | En Marzo 2008 cuando Javier y yo habiamos estado juntos por solo un mes, fuimos de viaje a Louisville para que el conociera a mis amigos del colegio en el desfile del dia de San Patricio. En ese tiempo, el desfile era una excusa para beber en los bares en Bardstown Road durante el día, y casi 10 años después nada ha cambiado mucho. En esa ocasión hizo mucho frío y llovió casi todo el día, así que vimos la mayor parte del desfile desde la ventana de Wicks Pizza. Recuerdo que uno de los carros alegóricos era un camion cualquiera con un par decoraciones verdes nada mas, y Javi me miro con sus cejas levantadas y me preguntó “y esto es todo? esto fue el desfile?” – siiiiii…fue espectacular. |
| It was bitter cold again this year but fortunately there wasn’t any rain, so the open-air “floats” could still participate in the action. Javi and I managed to get a killer parking spot right next to the action on Bardstown Rd. and met up with our friends Melissa and Doug and their kids. Obviously the parade was celebrating St. Patrick’s Day, but it did have a distinctly Mardi Gras vibe to the occasion with parade participants wearing some pretty outrageous outfits and throwing beads and candy from the parade vehicles. | Hizo mucho frio este año, otra vez, pero afortunadamente no habia lluvia, así que los carros alegóricos abiertos podian participar en en la acción. Javi y yo logramos estacionarnos bien cerca de la acción en Bardstown Rd. donde nos juntamos con nuestros amigos Melissa, Doug, y sus hijos. Obviamente el desfile celebraba el Dia de San Patricio, pero tenia un ambiente de carnaval de New Orleans con participantes usando ropa algo ridícula y tirando dulces desde los carros alegóricos. |

| I’m catching myself from saying floats because there were only a couple of legit floats…most of the parade participants were in trucks with banners and occasional open trailers decorated with balloons and full of people drinking and singing along to whatever music they were blasting (notably not Irish). I loved it – it was fun and laid back and exactly what you’d imagine a Louisville St. Patrick’s Day parade to be. We laughed the whole time; the bagpipes were followed by tiny cars followed by goats followed by the league of mascots followed by roller derby girls followed by some guy in a gold body suit…the most Irish part about it were the Irish dancers (who were great, by the way). | No puedo decir que los carros alegóricos fueron realmente “carros alegóricos”; la mayoría de los participantes usaron usando camiones y camionetas con señales y habian unos con remolques abiertos decorados con globos verdes y llenos de gente bebiendo y cantando (la mayoría no cantaba música de Irlanda). Me encantó todo – fue el desfile divertido y relajado que imaginas de un desfile en Louisville. Nos reímos durante todo el desfile; las gaitas fueron seguidas por autos miniaturas, seguidos por cabras vestido en verde, seguidas por la liga de mascotas, seguidas por las mujeres de roller derby, seguidas por un tipo vestido en un traje de oro…la parte mas Irlandesa del todo fueron las bailarinas Irlandesas (quien dieron un gran espectáculo , obviamente). |
| Louisville is so weird and goofy and that’s what I love about it. It was a funky parade that pretty much anyone can participate in (it seems) and it was a fun precursor to the upcoming Derby festivities! | Louisville es un poco extraño y algo loco y eso es lo que me encanta de la ciudad. Fue un desfile extraño y divertido en que cualquier grupo podia participar, y fue un buen precursor de las fiestas del Kentucky Derby! |
