| In November we decided to try forcing bulbs to grow in the middle of winter inside our house (see here). This was an experiment for us – we hadn’t done it before and we didn’t know what to expect. We decided to plant hyacinths and daffodils – not the easiest to grow for this kind of experiment but we figured it’d be worth it if they bloomed. So far, we have sprouts from the daffodils but only the hyacinths have bloomed. Since we did not place the bulbs in the fridge for a few weeks (to trick them into winter mode) the hyacinths are shorter than expected. The idea of having them in the fridge is that they think is winter and they make this essential nutrient that helps them grow a longer stem. But even without the fridge time, they are blooming, so we’ll count that as a success!!! It’s great to have flowers blooming inside during the winter. Also, it’s not only a visual thing – you can smell these guys all over the house. Sometimes having them too close can be hard to handle beacuse the aroma gets really strong. It actually got so overwhelming that we finally confined all of the blooms into the doggo room to help overpower the smell of doggo and concentrate the flower smell in one room only. Hope the dogs like the smell of hyacinths! They are really beautiful, and help brighten up the house. |
En Noviembre decidimos forzar bulbos en medio del invierno dentro de la casa (vean aca). Este fue un experimento para nosotros – no lo habíamos intentado antes y no sabíamos que esperar. Escogimos jacintos y narcisos – no los mas fáciles de hacer crecer en este tipo de circunstancias pero pensamos que valdría la pena si florecían. Hasta ahora, hemos tenido brotes de ambos tipos pero solo los jacintos han florecido. Como no pusimos los bulbos en el refrigerador por un par de semanas (para hacerlo creer que era invierno) los jacintos tienen un tallo mas corto de lo esperado. Pero aun sin tener tiempo en el refrigerador, están floreciendo, así que contamos eso como un logro!!! Es genial yenes flores dentro de la casa en el invierno. Y no es solo algo visual – se pueden oler las flores por toda la casa. A veces es divicil estar muy cerca de ellas porque el aroma es fuerte. Se puso tan fuerte que tuvimos que dejar las flores confinadas en una sola pieza, donde viven los perros, así que nos ayudan a enmascarar el olor a perro. Esperamos que los perros estén de acuerdo con nuestra decision! Son muy lindos, y le dan un aura a la casa. |
