| Once we were back in Santiago, we focused on relaxing at the Rodriguez home. The heat outside made it difficult to move around too much, but the morning after we arrived back home Javier and I went with his dad to the farmer’s market to stock up on fruits and veggies for our NYE celebration. Once we were back home, it was time for Almendra, the Rodriguez family dog, to get her “Javi-is-back-in-town” bath. She only ever gets a bath when Javi is home, and since the last time he was in Chile was for our wedding in 2009, this bath was a long time comin’. Usually Almendra puts up a fight over getting wet, but with the heat outside I’m sure she was thrilled to be doused in cold water. Javi and Maca brushed and scrubbed her, and she came out fresh and clean and ready for the NYE party. | Una vez de vuelta en Santiago, nos concentramos en relajarnos en la casa de los Rodriguez. El calor afuera hacia dificil moverse mucho, pero la manana siguiente al dia que llegamos Javier, su papa y yo fuimos a la feria a comprar frutas y verduras para el ano nuevo. Una vez de vuelta, era hora de estar con Almendra, el perro de la familia Rodriguez, para darle un bano porque Javi estaba de visita!. Solo se bana cuando Javier esta en caa, y como la ultima vez que estuvo en Chile fue el 2009 para nuestro matrimonio, el bano era muy necesario. Normalmente Almendra no se deja mojar, pero con el calor afuera estaba muy feliz de sentir el agua fria. Javi y Maca la peinaron y limpiaron, y salir fresca y limpia lista para el ano nuevo. |
| For NYE, Javier’s parents planned a nice asado for dinner and invited a handful of friends and family over. Paula decided to take a bus from Puerto Montt to Santiago for the celebration, so we got to spend a little more time with the whole family. Cora flew up too, and Javier’s aunt and uncle who live in Santiago also came with their three kids. Javier’s best friend Guillermo came with his girlfriend, and with Maca’s boyfriend Alex there we had enough people to fill the whole back patio. | Para el ano nuevo, los papas de Javier planearon un asado para la cena con unos cuantos familiares y amigos. Paula decidio tomar un bus de Puerto Montt a Santiago para celebrar, asi que pudimos pasar mas tiempo en familia. Cora tambien viajo, y los tios de Javier que viven en Santiago vinieron con sus tres hijos. El mejor amigo de Javier, Guillermo, vino con su polola, y el pololo de Maca, Alex, tambien estuvo con nosotros. El patio estaba lleno. |
| The asado was incredible – Pancho and Alex were working on it for most of the evening before we finally sat down to eat just before midnight. We had an excellent selection of wine and appetizers out all evening, and we spent the whole night on the back patio swapping stories, catching up, drinking wine and smelling the delicious asado before going in to eat. At midnight everyone exchanged hugs and toasts, and when we finished eating we did a slideshow of the photos from our trip to Melinka. It was a really fun, relaxing evening with family and friends – a perfect way to close out 2013 and ring in the new year. Nothing like a good steak for your first meal of the year! | El asado estaba increible – Pancho y Alex trabajaron en el durante la mayor parte de la noche hasta que nos sentamos a comer justo antes de la media noche. Teniamos una excelente seleccion de vinos y aperitivos toda la noche, y pasamos todo el tiempo en el patio afuera intercambiando historia, poniendonos al dia, bebiendo vino, y oliendo el asado antes de comer. A la media noche nos abrazamos todos y brindamos, y cuando terminamos de comer hicimos una presentacion de las fotos del viaje a Melinka. Fue entretenido, tranquilo, con amigos y familia – la manera perfecta de cerrar el 2013 y darle la bienvenida al nuevo ano. Nada como un bueno corte de carne para la primera comida del ano! |
| The day after new years was our last full day in Chile. We spent most of the day at Alex’s family’s house making another asado and spending time on their back patio to celebrate Alex’s dad’s birthday. Alex’s mom is a chef and made an incredible meal for us, topped off with a delicious birthday cake. It was a wonderful way to spend our last day in Chile, once again with friends and family and good food. We also spent some time with sweet Coca, Alex’s little spaniel. We wish we could have everyone in Javier’s family here with us all of the time! Looking back on these photos is so much fun but also makes us miss everyone. It’s hard to be so far away, but we had an amazing trip overall! | El dia despues del ano nuevo fue nuestro ultimo en Chile. Pasamos la mayor parte del dia en la casa de la familia de Alex en otro asado y disfrutando del patio de su casa celebrando el cumpleanos del papa de Alex. La mama de Alex es una chef y preparo una comida deliciosa, con postre incluido. Fue la mejor manera de pasar nuestro ultimo dia en Chile, una vez mas con familia, amigos, y buena comida. Tambien pasamos tiempo con Coca, la perrita de Alex. Deseariamos que todos en la familia de Javier estuvieran con nosotros todo el tiempo! Ver las fotos es muy entretenido pero nos hace extranar mucho. Es dificil estar tan lejos, pero cuando nos juntamos lo pasamos muy bien! |

I hope it’s not as cold where you are as it is up here in the Midwest- because I can’t imagine transitioning from hot Chilean summer to this weather so quickly!
We were unlucky and went from 100s in Santiago to single digits in Tennessee….hahahaha
Que lata…mi hermana chilena me mandó un mensaje quejándose del calor mientras yo estaba en como cuatro capas de ropa! Eso es vivir a dos extremos del mundo!
