We made it to Chile!

It’s time for another Chilean Christmas!!!! Javier and I have been waiting for this trip since…well, truly since we left Chile the last time back in 2009 but this year since we bought our tickets in March. It’s been a LONG TIME COMING! We haven’t been since our wedding! This year we are planning to spend most of our time traveling in the south rather than staying in Santiago. We’ll write more about the actual trip in upcoming posts.

before the long flight…

The trip out to Chile was eventful enough! When we got to the gate in Nashville we had some characters surrounding us. There was one fella in the corner with mirror sunglasses on playing music on his phone like a boombox for the whole terminal to hear. A gentlemen then sat down behind Javier and me with headphones and proceeded to sing along terribly with his music – so it was just getting better and better. Two crying babies and one kiddo on his first flight later and we were all set for an epic journey to Miami. It was one of those tiny planes where you get nice and close to everyone around you – a merry little trip to be sure.

after the flight…less chipper to be sure

Javi and I got a kick out of the kid who was on his first flight – he was so jazzed about the whole experience. He was so cute – his neck reminded me of those telescopes in submarines in cartoons that rise up and just poke around everywhere; the man in front of him was watching a cartoon (!?) on his ipad and the kid was just having a blast drinking his coke and watching the whole thing from behind. Javi couldn’t resist snapping a photo…

Our flight from Miami to Santiago was on an older American Airlines plane that only had a couple of TVs and no screens on the backs of the chairs – so I couldn’t track our progress the whole trip. We slept a little and it was mostly uneventful until we got to the chaotic airport in Santiago. Good grief that place was a nightmare. We didn’t have to wait long to pay the reciprocity fee but by the time we got in the line to get through customs it was about 1000 people long (literally) and we had to hop in at the back and wait another hour to get through. The baggage claim was bottlenecked because of construction so imagine one current of people fighting to go one way with the enormous bags they already claimed and another stream of people going the opposite way with empty carts to collect their bags…it was awful. Maca picked us up with her boyfriend Alex and we were FINALLY out of there after about an hour and a half!

Once we were reunited with Javier’s parents and sweet doggo Almendra (who hadn’t seen Javi the longest – 4 years!) back home, we had just enough time to shower and eat a little lunch before packing up their Citroen Jumper and hitting the road! We drove about 12 hours down to Osorno, Chile where his grandma and aunt and uncle live – the first stop on our journey to the south!

  1. Hope you guys have a great time! And if it makes you feel any better, I discovered on the flight to St. Thomas that you now have to PAY for the screens on the back of the chair, even if you just want to track the flight progress and not watch movies!!
