Bulb attack!

Some of our favorite flowers are bulbs. Last year when we worked on our new landscape it was too late to plant bulbs and we had to wait to the next fall to plant. Well, fall is here, and bulbs are here! We went crazy planting them throughout our landscaping. I’ll tell you what we planted and how in a second, but first let me tell you why we love bulbs.

Algunas de nuestras flores favoritas son bulbos. El ano pasado cuando trabajamos en el jardin, era muy tarde para plantar bulbos y tuvimos que esperar hasta el siguiente otono para plantar. Bien, el otono llego, y los bulbos tambien! Nos volvimos locos con los bulbos! Les contare lo que plante en un segundo, pero primero dejenme contarles el porque nos encantan los bulbos.

There are many awesome things about bulbs. Spring blooming bulbs are planted once and they will continue to bloom year after year. You can plant them next to perennial plants and they will grow and bloom before the perennials wake up. They are a sure sign that spring has arrived, they are beautiful, and best of all, they are very low maintenance.

Hay muchas razones porque los bulbos son geniales. Los bulbos que florecen en la primavera se plantan una vez y florecen ano tras ano. Se pueden plantar al lado de las plantas que mueren en el invierno y no vuelven hasta tarden en la primavera, asi los bulbos florecen a principios de primavera antes de ser cubiertos por el folliage de otras plantas. Son una senal de que la primavera ha llegado, son hermosos, y lo mejor, facil de mantener.

Leslie’s favorite flower is the tulip, so we planted some of those. She also likes daffodils, so we planted some of those too. We wanted some variety so we planted a few hyacinths, alliums, and crocus (crocuses? or croci?). The breakdown is: 125 tulips, 6 alliums, 80 daffodils, 25 hyacinths, and 100 crocus. That’s a lot of bulbs!

La flor favorita de Leslie es el tulipán, por lo plantamos algunos de ellos. También le gustan los narcisos, así que plantamos algunos de esos tambien. También queríamos un poco de variedad, así que plantamos unos jacintos, alliums y azafrán. El desglose es: 125 tulipanes, 6 alliums, 80 narcisos, 25 jacintos, y 100 azafrán. Eso es un montón de bulbos!

From what I read – I am not a bulb expert – the trick is to make sure to plant the bulbs at the right depth. To complete this task I used a drill with a bulb auger. It took a while, but I am so excited to see the result on the spring. I covered the bulbs with mulch, and then covered the mulch with chicken wire to keep the squirrels away from the bulbs. I read online that if squirrels look chubby it is because the winter will be long. Well, if the squirrels around our house are chubby I want to make sure it’s because the winter will be long and not because they ate all my bulbs. I hope they don’t even try to eat them – they drove me crazy this summer eating my tomatoes.
