| My grandma wrote this guest post – a wonderful, detailed account for the whole family of Javier’s citizenship ceremony. We couldn’t attend because we were in Florida for my cousin’s wedding, but grandma accompanied Javier and we were so grateful she could be there with him! | The replica of the Seal on the back wall of the courtroom reads: “District Court of the United States Middle District Tenn” and the acoustics are pretty good. We sat on two sides of the room and had no trouble hearing the detailed instructions for us the audience: cell phones off, no standing, no snacks or drinks(do not give your children drinks or snacks), please take children out if they become disruptive [that happened two or three times], do not stand to take pictures, use cell phones only for pictures no video games,etc. There were about seventy people to be naturalized and with relatives the room, while big, didn’t have a whole lot of seating space. In fact, for the actual swearing-in, Javi sat half off a hard bench which put a dent in his fun. But without those clearly delineated guidelines there could have been no end of moving and bumping and noise. | La replica del sello en el fondo de la sala de la corte dice: Corte del Distrito de los Estados Unidos Distrito de Tennessee Medio” y la acustica es buena. Nos sentamos en dos lados de sala y no tuvimos problemas para oir las detalladas instrucciones para la audiencia: telefonos apagados, no pararse, no bebdias ni comida (no les den comida o bebida a sus ninos), por favor lleven a los ninos afuera de la sala si no estan en silencio [eso paso dos o tres veces], no se paren a tomar fotos, los telefonos se pueden usar solo para tomar fotos, etc. Habian mas o menos 70 personas siendo naturalizados y con parientes en la sala, aunque grande, no tenia suficiente espacio para sentarse. De hecho, para el juramento, Javi tuvo que sentarse al final de una banca medio afuera de ella, lo cual afecto su experiencia un poco. Pero sin esas reglas claras lo mas seguro es que el movimiento, ruido, e interrupciones no habrian terminado nunca. |
| It took an hour for each person to be called up to a table where their bona fides were examined and they signed the crucial Certificate which is the basic ID — like a birth certificate, really. I thought they’d never call Javi, they don’t have his name, etc. but finally did. Instructions about the Certificate: no laminating, black and white copies only, etc. | Demoro una hora para que cada persona sea llamada a la mesa donde sus papeles eran examinados y firmaran el crucial certificado que es la identificacion basica – como un certificado de nacimiento en verdad. Pense que nunca llamarian a Javi, no tenian su numbre o algo asi, pero al final lo llamaron. Instrucciones sobre el certificado, no lo laminen, fotocopias en blanco y negro solamente, etc. |
| More instructions to the important people about what would happen next: judge would come in, we’d stand, each inductee would be called by name and that person would stand and repeat the full name (and as Javi said later, with the right accent) [so they practiced that with about 10 people], then the judge would read the oath (they practiced the last couple of sentences). So we sat patiently for ten minutes and the judge came in, we all did the right thing by him, the oath taken, a few words by the judge. I heard the judge praise Senator Ted Kennedy and someone else for introducing legislation concerning naturalization, and he gave them John Kennedy’s “Ask not what your country can do for you; ask what you can do for your country.” Then each one went forward to shake the judge’s hand. Everyone got a big packet of stuff with the certificate | Mas instrucciones a la gente importante fueron anunciadas: el juez iba a entrar, nosotros nos parariamos, cada persona seria llamada por us nombre y esa persona se pararia, repetiria su nombre completo (y como Javi dijo despues, con el acento correcto) [ asi que practicaron con mas o menos 10 personas ], luego el juez leeria el juramento (practicaron un par de oraciones). Asi que nos sentamos pacientemente por 10 minutos hasta que el juez entro, hicimos como se nos dijo, el juramento fue recibido, y una cuentas palabras del juez fueron ofrecidas. Escuche al juez hablar sobre Ted Kennedy y alguien mas por instaurar la legislacion sobre la naturalizacion, y tambien hablo sobre John Kennedy y sus palabras “No preguntes que puede hacer el pais por ti, pregunta que puedes hacer por tu pais”. Luego cada uno paso al frente a darle la mano al juez. Cada persona recibio un paquete con varios papeles aparte del certificado. |
| Some people got their names changed legally during the ceremony, which I thought interesting. I sat next to a Hindu boy whose mother was taking the oath. Quite a few national costumes. I wish I could have heard the names of countries of origin — Javi can remember most — but so many countries and only two or three from Mexico. | Algunas personas cambiaron su nombre legalmente durante la ceremonia, lo cual crei fue interesante. Me sente al lado de un nino Hindu cuya madre estaba haciendo el juramento. Unos cuentos trajes nacionales. Desearia poder haber escuchado los nombres de los paises de origen – Javi pudo recordar la mayoria – pero muchos paises y solo 2 o 3 de Mexico. |
| Before it all, while we were still waiting outside the courtroom, Javi began to befriend a little woman from Korea there with her daughter and helped steer her in when the principals were taken inside, brought out her drink which she shouldn’t have taken, and helped her later. They left before Javi came through and the daughter thanked me for my son 🙂 What a good guy Javi is.From the proud grandma-in-law. | Antes de que todo empezara, mientras esparabamos afuera de la sala, Javi comenzo a hacerce amigo de una mujer Koreana que estaba con su hija y la ayudo a guiarla cuando solo la gente que iba a hacer el juramento podia entrar a la sala. El trajo su botella de agua afuera ya que no podia tenerla adentro, y la ayudo en la ceremonia. Congratulations, Javier! And I really enjoyed the detailed account of the proceedings by your grandma-in-law. It was wonderful to see you at Andrew’s wedding in Florida later on in the day. You had an incredibly busy weekend!
