Chicago 2013

Ok ok I’ve waited too long to post about Chicago! My mom and I left for Chicago two Wednesdays ago – we were going to leave on Thursday but the weather was terrible and…well. If I can avoid flying in bad weather, it’s better for everyone involved in the travel experience. Anyway, thanks to the weather and my very patient sister-in-law who didn’t mind us coming early even though Ian was out of town, my mom and I got a whole extra day in Chicago! Ian and Andrea have been in their new Chicago neighborhood Roscoe Village since July and I had only been to see their new place once. My mom had been there a few times, but neither of us had yet had a chance to explore the neighborhood and visit all the shops and boutiques around the neighborhood. So, on Thursday morning after a slow, coffee-filled start we took off and spent the entire day wandering in and out of all the boutiques, trying on all the sale items and walking away with a few purchases (I bought a hat & top and my mom got a fabulous pair of cream-colored boots).

Ok ok he esperado mucho para postear sobre Chicago! Mi mama y yo viajamos a Chicago hace 2 miércoles atrás – íbamos a salir un Jueves pero el tiempo estaba malísimo y…bueno, si puedo evitar volar en mal tiempo, es mejor para todos quienes viajan conmigo. Pero bueno, gracias al buen tiempo y a mi paciente cunada a quien no le importo que llegáramos un día antes a pesar que Ian no estaba en Chicago todavía, mi mama y yo tuvimos un día extra en Chicago! Ian y Andrea han estado viviendo en su nuevo barrio, Roscoe Village, desde Julio y solo los he visitado una vez. Mi mama ha ido a verlos ya un par de veces, pero ninguna de nosotras había tenido la oportunidad de recorrer el barrio y visitar las tiendas que hay alrededor. Así que el Jueves después de una mañana lenta nos tomamos el día para vitrinear y pasear, nos probamos todo lo que estaba en oferta y salimos con un par de compras (yo me compre un sombrero y una polera, y mi mama una botas color crema fabulosas)

On Thursday at around midnight Ian came in from Las Vegas and he was able to work from home on Friday. To keep from bothering him, my mom and I went back out to the shops and got manicures down the street from their apt, but we spent part of the day in the apt with Ian being as quiet as possible. Basically, Thursday and Friday were days of relaxing and taking it easy, keeping out of the cold and enjoying time with Ian and Andrea. On Friday night, they took us out to a sweet little Italian restaurant Piazza Bella down the street from their house before we left for the airport to pick up Javier.

El Jueves en la media noche, Ian llego de Las Vegas y pudo trabajar desde casa el viernes. Para evitar molestarlo, mi mama y yo volvimos a salir de paseo y fuimos a un manicure cerca de su casa y luego pasamos la mayor parte de día siendo lo más silenciosas posible mientras Ian trabajaba. Básicamente el Jueves y Viernes fueron días de relajo, manteniéndonos alejadas del frio y disfrutando el tiempo con Ian y Andrea. El viernes en la noche, nos llevaron a un lindo restaurant italiano llamado Piazza Bella para luego ir al aeropuerto a buscar a Javi.

On Saturday, we spent more time all together outside of the apt – it was an uncharacteristically warm day in Chicago (55 degrees!!) so we took advantage of that by spending time wandering around outside and enjoying the sunshine. I didn’t take many photos (ahhh shocking) but we had a great time – and on Saturday evening we went to Portillo’s instead of Al’s Beef to try out a different Italian beef restaurant. Portillo’s was amazing – and HUGE. We got sandwiches and one slice of chocolate cake to split between the 5 of us – so. so. delicious. Uh…I’m also a little embarrassed to admit that about an hour later we also went out to get gelato.

El Sábado, pasamos la mayor parte del tiempo juntos fuera de la casa – estaba inusualmente tibio el día en Chicago así que aprovechamos de pasar tiempo afuera y disfrutar de los rayos de sol. No saque muchas fotos (oooh que raro!) pero lo pasamos bien – y el Sábado en la noche fuimos a Portillo’s en vez de Al’s Beef para probar un restaurant de sándwich de carne italiana diferente. Portillo’s estaba espectacular – y enorme!. Nos compramos sándwiches y compartimos una porción de torta de chocolate – muy muy delicioso. Me da vergüenza decir que después de eso también fuimos a tomar helado.

On Sunday morning, Andrea treated us to an awesome homemade brunch – a quiche, a hashbrown casserole, coffee, grapes…it was awesome! Mostly, our trip consisted of relaxing and hanging out with family and amazing food. An ideal weekend! It was great spending time with Ian and Andrea to kick off 2013 – now it’s their turn to visit us!! 😉

El Domingo en la mañana, Andrea nos prepare un desayuno excelente – un quiche, cacerola de papas, café, uvas…fue genial! Nuestro viaje fue más que nada de relajo y de disfrutar tiempo juntos y buena comida. Un fin de semana ideal! Fue genial pasar tiempo con Ian y Andrea para comenzar el 2013 – ahora ellos nos tienen que venir a visitar!! 😉
