Decorating Christmas Cookies

Every year at Christmas my parents would drive me and Ian down to Birmingham after we opened our presents in Louisville to spend the rest of the Christmas holiday at my grandparents’ beautiful farm. While we were en route my grandmother would bake and cook up a storm for us – and she always included Christmas sugar cookies 0n the menu. By the time we got there the cookies would all be ready for decorating and she’d have all the decorating materials ready – colorful frosting, toothpicks, sprinkles, red hots, chocolate chips etc. All the aunts, uncles and cousins would bunch together around the table and kitchen counters and decorate the cookies cut into trees, snowmen, little people, wreaths, holly, santa etc. Melissa would always flip the cookies around and turn them into something different – like turning the Christmas tree sideways and making it into a shark. Abstract cookie art.

Even though we don’t go down to Birmingham for Christmas anymore (my Birmingham grandparents passed away several years ago) we still keep the tradition alive here in Nashville. This year we invited our family friends the Andrews over to decorate – we thought their three kids would enjoy it as much as I did when I was a kiddo. My mom, grandma, aunt Regena, Javier and I baked the cookies all morning. Javi and I were in charge of cutting the cookies out and, as if we needed further confirmation that Javier is a perfect fit in this family, he started his own tradition in cookie art making hybrid cookie cutouts. The first one was an owl head on a gingerbread man and it was downhill from there – owl heads on angels, rocking horse heads on gingerbread people, snowman heads on rockinghorses – you get the idea.

Lucas, Jonas and Mia all loved the cookies (and the tasty frosting) and we decorated about 50 or 60 cookies in all. We had a great afternoon mixing colors, adding sprinkles, figuring out exactly how to decorate the hybrids…and of course stuffing our faces with cookies!
