| Happy belated Thanksgiving!! We are still recovering from turkey / corn casserole / sweet potato / praline pie comas…Yesterday was a total blast. We drove up to Louisville with my parents on Wednesday evening after Javier got off work and made it to my aunt Marian and uncle Stephen’s house by around 10:30. The traffic was surprisingly tolerable for the day before Thanksgiving! When we arrived everyone was already at the house except for Ian and Andrea who didn’t come over until Thursday morning. We always eat our big Thanksgiving meal at lunch time, which means we get to eat leftovers for dinner. There’s nothing better than two Thanksgiving meals in one day! This year we had sweet potato casserole, corn casserole, turkey, rolls, mashed potatoes, fruit compote, green bean casserole, stuffing, cranberry apple bake – it was an incredible layout. Before sitting down to any holiday meal, the McClure family (very musical) always sings a hymn for the blessing. This year it was “For the Beauty of the Earth” – Javi skipped out on singing along and got a little video (below). I love that tradition. | Feliz Dia de Acción de Gracias atrasado!! Todavia nos estamos recuperando del coma provocado por el pavo / cacerolas de choclo / camote / pies….ayer fue my divertido. Manejamos a Louisville con mis papas el Miercoles en la tarde despues que Javier salio del trabajo y llegamos a casa de mis tíos Marian y Stephen a las 10:30. El trafico estaba sorpresivamente tolerable para ser el dia antes de Accion de Gracias! Cuando llegamos, todos estaban en casa de mi tia excepto Ian y Andrea que no llegaron hasta el Jueves en la mañana. Siempre tenemos el festin de Accion de Gracias al almuerzo, lo que significa que podemos comer las sobras a la cena. No hay nada mejor que 2 comidas de Accion de Gracias en un día! Este ano teniamos cacerola de camote, cacerola de choclo, pavo, pancitas, puré, ensalada de fruta, cacerola de poroto verde, cocido de manzana y arándano – una variedad increíble! Antes de sentarnos a cualquier comida de celebración, la familia McClure (muy musical) siempre canta un himno de bendición. Este ano fue “Por la belleza de la Tierra” – Javi se salto el canto y grabo un video (abajo). Me encanta esta tradición. |
| After the big meal we all relaxed and napped for a little while and then in the late afternoon we all sat out on Marian and Stephen’s patio by the outdoor fireplace and brought out two gigantic volumes of letters that my grandmother and grandaddy wrote back and forth to one another. My aunt Jane organized each volume chronologically so you can read the letters they wrote in order – it’s so sweet. My grandmother was brilliant – so well read and articulate. I’m going to write a whole separate post featuring one or two of her letters from 1944 just to demonstrate a little of her humor and intellectual prowess – I wish I had known her as an adult. It’s such a treasure to have these long hand-written letters from them – it’s a glimpse into their personalities that I never got to see. | Despues del festín, todo nos pusimos a descansar un ratito para luego sentarnos en el patio de Marian y Stephen cerca de su chimenea exterior. Y nos pusimos a leer 2 libros llenos de cartas que mis abuelos intercambiaron en su juventud. Mi tia Jane organizo cada libro de manera cronologica para poder leer las cartas que escribieron en order – es muy dulce. Mi abuela era brillante – muy articulada y experta lectora. Voy a escribir un post separado sobre estas cartas de 1944 solo para demostrar su humor y su poder intelectual – desearia poder haberla conocido como un adulto. Es un tesoro tener estas cartas largas escritas a mano por ella – es una mirada a sus personalidades que nunca pude ver. |
| Later in the evening we all sat around – 14 of us – and played “Dictionary.” It’s basically balderdash but we have our own points system and there’s no board – our family loves playing games and this was the best way to get everyone involved. Javi copied all of the definitions down from the game that we invented, so we’ll put up a post within the next few days with an explanation of how to play and some of the examples of the hilarious fake definitions the members of my family invented. Overall it was such a great day – full of family, laughter, good food and good company! Hope you all had a wonderful day!! | Mas a la noche nos sentamos – los 14 – y jugamos “Diccionario”. Es basicamente “balderdash” pero tenemos nuestro propio sistema de puntaje y no necesitamos la caja – a nuestra familia les encanta jugar juegos de mesa y este es el mejor para involucrar a toda la familia. Javi copio la mayoria de las definiciones que inventamos en el juego, asi que escribiremos un post en los proximos días explicando como jugar y algunos ejemplos de las locas definiciones que los miembros de la familia inventaron. Despues de todo fue un gran día – lleno de familia, risas, buena comida y buena compagina! Esperamos que todos hayan tenido un dia fantástico! |

It is really awesome. They write so amazingly beautiful, the descriptions are amazing and it makes you feel like you are really there. It is a fantastic opportunity to get to know Leslie’s grandparents.
