The recent “drop” in temperature (I think we may permanently be out of the 90s!) and crisper morning air all signal the arrival of my favorite season of the year – fall!! To me, fall is 100x better than spring because I’m spared the horrific pollen allergies (though there’s still the dreaded ragweed) and the temperature only continues to go down instead of up, which to me is infinitely better than the Nashville summer inferno. Every year Javi and I mark the beginning of fall with a trip to the TN State Fair, held here in Nashville at the fairground. This is our 4th year in a row going to the fair and every year we have a great time. |

a photo from our 2009 trip to the fair
The first time Javi and I went to the state fair was in 2009 when we were engaged. We were bored one afternoon and got a flier in the mail for a free ticket so we decided to try it out and we were hooked. A place filled with animals, arts and crafts and photo ops? Sounds like our kind of place. We spent most of our time hanging out with the goats and, of course, taking photos. In 2010 we brought my mom and gma and then last year we recruited our friend Samantha. Last year we left with a goldfish (Charlie) that we won in a fair game and he was our little pet until this past March (RIP Charlie!). |
our first visit to the fair in 2009

with Sam and Charlie at the fair in 2011

This year we were actually able to recruit my dad to come along with us and mom. We had a great time perusing the agriculture building with all the veggie growing competitions and the arts & crafts building with the sewing and quilting competitions. This year I was also excited about a new feature – pig racing!! I don’t think the fair has ever had this before – I would definitely have gone to it if it had been on the program last year. This guy had these adorable little teacup pigs racing around a track to get to an oreo cookie at the end – they were so cute!!! We saw 4 races. Too fun. |
Vimos 4 carreras. Muy divertido. |

For dinner we were really disappointed that the hot beef sundae wasn’t available this year so we settled for corn dogs and turkey legs, and FRIED OREOS!. We also met up with our friend Whitney and her adorable son Jackson. They split a turkey leg for dinner but I’m not sure if Whitney was able to get her fill because Jackson decided he loved it and ate almost the whole thing! He also loved the fried oreos – his face positively lit up when he bit into it. |

that smile represents the pure joy of biting into a fried oreo for the first time
My parents left after dinner but Whitney and Jackson stayed with us for more fair fun. After a pit stop dancing to some country music (Jackson dancing and running around like a little maniac – he loved it) we visited the rabbit barn and the hens/roosters. We headed over to the petting zoo and Jackson LOVED petting the goats and the donkey and he did at least 4 complete laps around the zoo before we left. We went to the games next – Javi and I decided we wanted to try for another fish this year to occupy Charlie’s old bowl. Sure enough, with 35 balls we came away with one little fish! We decided his name was…Fishy. Original, I know…anyway, poor Fishy didn’t last a day in his new home. He was dead by Monday, poor guy, and Javi and I have no idea what happened! Charlie lasted so long – we were pretty bummed. RIP Fishy!! |
Charlie duro mucho – nosp uso triste. QEPD Pescadito!! |

The fair is still open this weekend, so all of you Nashvillians take a trip! It’s cheap and good fun. Check out the program here to get an idea of the shows going on throughout the weekend – and make sure to check out the racing pigs if you can! |
