| Yesterday my friend Mary sent me a text with a pic of the 2012 Vanderbilt Commencement Handbook – with my picture on the front cover! I’d seen the photo before as the May 2012 photo in the Vanderbilt University calendar but I didn’t realize it would also be published on the commencement handbook. It’s a really fun picture of me with my two friends from Vanderbilt’s Latin American Studies masters program – Katie Chalk is on my right and Morgan Maxwell on my left. We graduated with an MA back in 2010. It was one of the hottest days of the year and we sat out in the sun with the robes and hood for an hour watching to the award ceremony before we headed off to the College of Arts and Sciences graduate student tent to get our diplomas. I made the huge mistake of wearing my incredibly long hair down that day…Nashville in May is way too hot and humid for all that. I’m going to try to get a copy of this handbook because I didn’t purchase any professional photos from that day and I think it’d be a great keepsake. | Ayer mi amiga Mary me mando un mensaje de texto con la foto del libreto de la graduacion de Vandebilt 2012 – con mi foto en la portada! Vi la foto antes como la foto de Mayo en el calendario de la Universidad de Vanderbilt pero nunca pense que tambien seria publicada en el libreto de graduacion. Es una foto muy entretenida donde salgo junto con dos amigas del programa de magister en estudios latino americanos de Vanderbilt – Katie Chalk esta a mi derecha y Morgan Maxwell a mi izquierda. Nos graduamos con un master en artes el 2010. Fue uno de los dias mas calurosos del ano y nos tuvimos que sentar en el sol con nuestras capas y sombreros escuchando la ceremonia de graduacion antes de salir en camino a la carpa de la escuela de Artes y Ciencias donde recibiriamos nuestros diplomas. Cometi el tremendo error de llevar el pelo suelto ese dia…Nashville en Mayo es muy caluroso y humedo para hacer eso. Voy a conseguirme una copia del libretto porque no compre ninguna foto profesional de ese dia y creo que seria un gran recuerdo. |
| One of the best parts about commencement at Vanderbilt is the reception with strawberries and champagne afterward. All over the grounds they set up huge tents over long tables covered with mountains of strawberries and huge bowls of powdered sugar (and trays of little sandwiches and fruit and cheese and crackers). Around the periphery of the tents they have more long tables with hundreds of glasses of champagne and mimosas for all of the students and their families. It’s amazing! I’ve been to three Vanderbilt graduations – one for my brother in 2005, one in 2009 for my fellow CLAS students who graduated after my first year and then my graduation from CLAS in 2010. It’s always hot and miserable but the reception and happy families and students taking photos with their diplomas afterward is the highlight. Below are a few more pics of my graduation in 2010…looking forward to the next one! | Una de las mejores cosas de la fiesta de graduacion en Vanderbilt son las montanas de frutillas que hay despues de la ceremonia. En todo el campus ponen carpas enormes con mesas largas tapadas con montanas de frutillas y bowls llenos de azucar flor (oh, y bandejas con mini sandwishes y fruta y galletas con queso). En el perimetro de las carpas hay otras carpas con mesas llenas de vasos de champagne y mimosas para todos los estudiantes y sus familiares. Es increible! He ido a tres graduaciones en Vanderbilt – una el 2005 para la graduacion de mi hermano, una para la graduacion de los estudiantes del segunod ano de estudios latino americanos (cuando yo estaba en mi primer ano) y luego para mi propia graduacion el 2010. Siempre hace calor y uno se siente miserable pero la fiesta de recepcion y las familias y estudiantes felices tomando fotos con sus displomas es lo mejor. Aqui van algunas fotos de mi graduacion el 2010…tengo muchas ganas de estar en la proxima! |

One of my favorite days!
As I was reading I thought “How nice…strawberry and cheese trays.” UH! Then I saw the pics…HOW AWESOME! Mountains of strawberries and cheese!
hahahaha yeah!! it’s insane!! and the tents full of those strawberries are all over campus…maybe 50 of them? It’s quite the event!
