Normally I don’t think I’d spend a whole post talking about what I got for Christmas, but this year was extra special. I can’t believe the number of handmade and thoughtful gifts we unwrapped yesterday! Last night when we finally got back to our house after spending Christmas at my parents’ house we spread everything out on the table to take a look at everything again a little more calmly (opening presents is a crazy business with 14 people!).

Normalmente no creo que escribiría sobre todos los regalos que nuestras familias nos regalaron para la navidad pero este año fue bastante especial. No puedo creer el numero de regalos hecho a mano que recibimos ayer! Anoche cuando finalmente llegamos a nuestra casa despues de pasar todo el dia en la casa de mis papas, pusimos todos los regalos encima de la mesa para verlos con calma (abrir regalos con 14 personas es realmente una locura!). 

One of the first things we opened was this incredible table runner that Javier’s mom crocheted for us. She was in a car accident before Javier was born that damaged her eyesight so she hasn’t crocheted in at least 26 years, though she used to love to crochet. She decided that she wanted to give us something for our house that she made. It’s so beautiful – such a treasure for us to have! She told me she’s a perfectionist (ahem…like a certain Javier I know) and she wanted it to come out just right, and it literally is beyond perfection. There’s not one mistake or clue that it was handmade!

Uno de los primeros regalos que abrimos fue un camino de mesa de crochet que Meri nos hizo. Hace años, antes de que Javier naciera, ella tuvo un accidente de auto que hizo daño a su vision y desde entonces no ha hecho nada de crochet, aunque ella le encantaba hacerlo. Ella decidio este año que queria regalarnos algo para la casa que ella hizo. Es tan bonito – un tesoro para nosotros. Ella me dijo que es perfeccionista (ahem…como un cierto Javier que conozco) y ella queria que saliera perfecto, y literalmente es increíble. No hay una equivocación o pista que fue hecho a mano! 

Another wonderful homemade gift was a poem from my grandma that she wrote for everyone, including a version in Spanish for Javier’s parents. She gave us all copies – we’ll have to frame ours. My grandma is truly a great writer (she’s published two books!) and we loved this gift. Later, Andrea, my mom, my grandma, Macarena and I all opened beautiful neck warmers that Paula knit for us! They are fabulous – she started making these when she moved to Patagonia and sold them for her livelihood until she found a job teaching. They are SO warm and comfortable – she gave me two.

Otro regalo especial fue hecho por mi abuela – un poema que ella escribio para todos, incluso una versión en español para los papas de Javier. Ella dio copias para todos – quiero ponerlo en un marco para guardarlo. Mi abuela es una escritora muy buena (ha publicado dos libros!) y estabamos muy felices con ese regalo. Despues, Andrea, mi mama, mi abuela, Macarena y yo abrimos cuellos que Paula tejio para nosotros! Son fabulosos – ella empezo a hacerlos cuando recién mudó a Patagonia y los vendió para ganar plata hasta que encontró un trabajo enseñando. Son tan calentitos y comodos – ella me regalo dos. 

One of the last gifts that we opened was a gift from his grandma that literally made me scream. His grandma is an incredible artist and paints and makes all kinds of crafts. When Javier opened this gift I just couldn’t believe it. She took two pictures of Chupete and Choripan and painted their likenesses on a canvas and they are exact down to the detail. She captured Chupete’s worried, furrowed brow and Choripan’s happy-go-lucky face while he chews on a stick. Their markings are there, everything. She spent three months painting it!! What an amazing gift!

Uno de los ultimos regalos que abrimos fue un regalo de su abuela que me hizo gritar. Su abuela es una artista increíble; ella pinta y hace todo tipo de artesanía. Cuando Javier abrió este regalo no podía creerlo. Ella uso dos fotos de Chupete y Choripan para hacer una pintura de ellos dos – y son exactas hasta los detallitos. Ella captó la cara preocupada de Chupete y la felicidad de Choripan con su palo. Ella paso tres meses pintandola! Que regalo mas genial! 

Some other fun, thoughtful gifts from the day were little ornaments that my mom bought for me and Javier to represent our year (a mailbox for our new house and a couple of doggie ornaments to represent our new pups), a real Chilean chupaya Pancho brought for my dad, a beautiful sweater from my brother and Andrea, another sweater from Chile that my mom and grandma also got in different colors, two ponchos for my mom and grandma, a Chilean cookbook from Maca for us, and a few gift certificates to Lowes so Javier can start building my new office in the guest room!! 🙂 And I’d be terribly remiss if I didn’t mention that of everything, by far the most special gift for us was to have everyone together, to have my parents’ house open to my in-laws, to have my brother and Andrea here, to have the opportunity to introduce our grandmothers to one another, to spend time with all my sisters-in-law, to be able to communicate in English in Spanish, and a million other irreplaceable memories that we are making this holiday season.

Algunos otros regalos muy lindos fueron ornamentos para el arbol de navidad de mi mama que representan nuestro año 2011 (un buzon que significa nuestra casa nueva, unos ornamentos de perros), una chupaya para mi papa del papa de Javier, un chaleco muy lindo de mi hermano y cuñada y otro de Chile que también recibio mi abuela y mi mama en diferentes colores, dos ponchos para mi abuela y mi mama, un libro de cocina para nosotros de Macarena, y unos gift certificates para Lowes para comenzar a construir mi nueva oficina! 🙂 Y yo estaria muy equivocada si no dijera que entre todos los regalos, lo mas especial fue tener todos juntos en un lugar, tener la casa de mis papas abierta para recibir mi familia de Chile, tener mi hermano y su esposa aqui, tener la oportunidad para presentar mi abuela a la abuela de Javier, pasar tiempo con todas mis cuñadas, poder comunicarme en ingles y español, y un millón de otras memorias irreemplazables que estamos haciendo este año.
