an End-of-Semester kind of weekend

Last weekend was about as perfect as a weekend can get. I’m closing in on the end of the semester and I can almost see the light at the end of an extremely long, dark and unforgiving tunnel of academia. Ok – it’s not really all that bad. In fact, I feel pretty good about the end of this semester; I have three final papers and a final exam, and two of my papers are already well under way. I’m hoping I can knock most of them out this week so I only have one paper to work on over Thanksgiving, but that means that this week is entirely dedicated to writing writing writing, and it kind of wears on the soul after a little while. So Javi and I made sure the make the most of this past weekend so my soul was nice and prepared for the beating it was gonna take over the next week until Thanksgiving break – and so far it’s working.

mmm VP beer and pretzel. Nothing. Better.

I started off the weekend right with a beer and pretzel at the Village Pub with my friend Lauren, and afterward we went to the Pied Piper with Javier and Lauren’s fiancee Matt, which Javi already wrote about. On Saturday I woke up pretty early and Javi and I took the dogs out for a run on Shelby Bottoms Greenway (hello – yet another reason we love our neighborhood). We’ve been trying to get more exercise for ourselves and the dogs lately, so we started running about a month ago around our neighborhood (I’ve been running for a few years but Javi NEVER wanted to run with me before – it’s so much more fun for me to have some company!!). So far we’ve only been able to map out about a 1.6 mile run in our immediate neighborhood, but the greenway is only 2 minutes from our house so we tried it out for a 3 mile run on Saturday morning. It was perfect! It was totally empty (I’d never run it alone – too lonely) and we managed a nice 1.5 miles out, stopped in the middle of a bridge and snapped a few photos, then turned back and ran the 1.5 miles back. Lovely.

Hermoso.

Getting ready for our first run about a month ago. I had to document it.

I spent basically the next 6 hours starting one of my papers – getting the first few intelligible words on a blank word doc is always the hardest part for me – so I spent the entire Saturday afternoon taking care of that first step for a couple of papers (and I missed my little friend Anne Claire’s 2nd birthday party! that was the one big drawback of the weekend). In the evening Javi and I took a trip out to the Lebanon Outlet mall – we’ve been waiting to do this for awhile. We gave ourselves a $100 limit each – we had a little extra from a couple of photo shoots I did over the summer (this literally never happens between bills and savings, usually every penny is spoken for by the middle of the month!).

We got to the outlet mall and I tried on and held about 50 different items at different stores, but I’m so glad I held out til the end to spend it because Javi and I walked into Wilson’s leather as a joke and walked out with a leather jacket each! I’ve NEVER owned a leather jacket before. When I was in high school my mom, dad and brother all had leather jackets but I wanted a pea coat. Let me tell you – Javi and I look super suave with our new winter gear. And although he hates to admit it, we now have two “matching” winter coats! Ok…so our leather ones don’t look anything alike, but they are both leather so that’s something right? Our other jackets (we call them our “sweet jackets”) are two black down jackets that look pretty similar. I think it’s fantastic. Javi…would rather not emphasize that we have matching things. Whatever.

leather jackets!! and Javi trying to ignore the camera while he drives out of the parking lot

I actually started writing about Sunday (you can’t have a perfect weekend without a great Sunday right?) but this is getting long and I have alot of fun photos to share from Sunday, so it’s going to wait. So check back later, because Sunday involves another one of Mom’s Amazing Meals (MAMs? I don’t like that acronym…but I’ll keep working on it. Suggestions are welcome.), some thrilling data analysis (try not to get too excited), and…wait for it…Christmas decorations!! Haha…judge me all you want, but I’ll explain my rationale for introducing Christmas in the Rodriguez household before Thanksgiving later. Happy Wednesday!
