Summer is almost over. This time next week I’ll be on a plane home from Las Vegas (so the posts are about to get REALLY entertaining) where the ASA conference is taking place this year (ok maybe they won’t be that entertaining…) and on Wednesday I have my first class. Yesterday I went into our main office and got all of my readings for the class together and looking at the gigantic stack of paper reminded me that I haven’t shared a couple of important things from our mini road trip this past weekend, like my aunt Marian’s dissertation…which is another ENORMOUS stack of good reading. Actually I’m assuming it’s good reading – my grandmother actually told my aunt it was “unreadable” which is kind of funny, but my aunt told me a bit about her ethnographic political science research in Haiti and it sounded fascinating. She even had the questionnaire she used to interview peasants in Haiti in the back of the dissertation which by itself was fun to read. My aunt graduated with her PhD from Harvard and she told me a little about the process of writing her dissertation back then…like the 6-digit coding she had to use to insert footnotes for citations before word processors came around. Yikes. I’m spoiled. Anyway…I got a couple of photos of it because it’s huge and awesome. My uncle also gave me a new flash meter (!!!) which will come in handy with photobooths that Javi and I set up and a flash trigger for my camera (my uncle is a super photographer and has his own darkroom in their basement!) so we used the new gadgets on a portrait of Javi wearing my aunt Marian’s Harvard graduation robes…he looks so intellectual! 🙂

El verano casi termina. La proxima semana estare volviendo de Las Vegas (asi que los post se van a poner entretenidos) donde se organizo la conferencia de ASA este ano (ok eso no es muy entretenido) y el proximo miercoles tengo mi primera clase del semestre. Ayer fui a la Universidad a recoger las lecturasy viendo el tremendo monton de papeles me record que no he compartido algunas memorias de nuestro viaje a Chicago, como la disertacion de mi tia Marian…..otro monton de buen material de lectura. Supongo que es buena lectura – mi abuela una vez le dijo a mi tia que su disertacion era imposible de leer, lo que es gracioso, pero mi tia me conto sobre su investicacion en Haiti y me parece fascinante. Incluso tenia el questionario que uso para entrevistar campesinos en Haiti al final de la disertacion y es muy entrenido leer las preguntas. Mi tia se graduo de su doctorado en Harvard y em conto sobre el proceso de escribir su disertacion en ese tiempo….como el codigo de 6 digitos que tenia que usar para insertar notaciones y citas antes de que existieran los procesadores como Word. Uff.. Ahora es tan facil! Pero bueno….saque un par de fotos porque es enorme y genial. Mi tio me regalo un medidor de flash para mi camara! Y va a ser muy util para la proxima vez que hagamos una sesion de fotos y tambien un control remoto para el flash (mi tio es un super fotografo y tiene su propio studio de revelado en el subterraneo!). As ique usamos mis juguetes nuevos para hacer un retrato de Javi usando la tunica de graduacion de Harvad de mi tia…se ve tan intelectual! 🙂

So now I’m enjoying my last couple of days of summer before homework and research take over completely. We got our pups back yesterday…Choripan is getting SO big now! He still thinks he fits perfectly on our laps so he’s soaking up quality time on our legs until he can’t fit there anymore. The picture below is a knockoff of the original picture with Chupete back in March (also posted) – our pups are the cutest.

Asi que ahora estoy disfrutando los ultimos dias de verano antes que last areas y la investigacion controlen mi vida por completo. Recogimos a los cachorros ayer….Choripan esta muy grande! Aunque todavia piensa que es chiquito y que cabe en nuestras piernas asi que esta aprovechando de sentarse con nosotros hasta que crezca demasiado. La foto que viene es la copia exacta de la foto original con Chupete en Marzo (mas abajo tambien) – nuestros cachorros son muy tiernos.

It sucks that I have to leave them AGAIN when I go out of town this weekend…this time all by my lonesome. I’m positively DREADING flying alone…but that’s another story for another day. And speaking of constantly being out of town, my parents just got home yesterday after a three-week  sojourn in Chicago and then California. It was the first time in my life that I’ve missed out on the family California vacation which was a bum deal but thanks to my dad’s thoughtful text messages…every single day…from the beautiful beach I felt like I was right there with them. Not. Anyway, it was weird being in Nashville without my folks around so I’m glad they’re back. Last night we went out to dinner with them and finally tried out a place down the street from us called Watanabe. Delicious! Have I ever mentioned that I LOVE our neighborhood?? Riverside Village is the best ever.

Me carga que tengo que dejarlos otra vez el fin de semana…..voy de viaje solita! No tengo ganas de volar sola….pero esa es otra historia. Y hablando de estar siempre de viaje, mis papas llegaron ayer de sus 3 semanas de vacaciones en Chicago y California. Por primera vez en mi vida no pude ir a California y reunirme con toda la familia, lo que fue muy triste pero gracias a los mensajes de texto y fotos de mi papa, todos los dias, fue casi como si estuviera con ellos….no, tal vez no. Fue raro no tener a mis papas en Nashville por tanto tiempo asi que estoy contenta que volvieron. Anoche fuimos a cenar con ellos y por fin probamos un restaurant que queda cerca de nuestra casa que se llama Watanabe. Delicioso! He mencionado alguna vez que amo mi vecindario??? Riverside Village es lo mejor!
