There are two desserts that always remind me of home, a big bowl of jello and flan (not together….butmaybe i just got a cool idea). I bet you are now thinking, “jello? That reminds me of the times I was sick, that is sick-times-food” (this is Leslie’s usual response). Well for me it is summer-time-its-so-hot-outside-that-im-melting-and-I-need-something-refreshing-and-sweet food. Flan…not so refreshing but definitely yummy!! I wish I knew a recipe to make flan from scratch…next project!

Hay dos postres que siempre me recuerdan mi casa, un bowl grande de jalea y flan (no juntos…mmm tal vez se me ocurrio una buena idea). Apuesto que ahora estan pensado, “Jalea? Eso me recuerda cuando estaba enfermo, esa es comida de hospital”. Bueno para mi es comida de verano cuando el sol te hace sentir que te estas derritiendo de a pocoy necesitas algo refrescante y dulce. Flan….no muy refrescante pero taaaan rico! Me gustaria saber una receta para prepararlo sin la cajita. (no se si es posible)

I always used to have a huge plastic bowl of jello (any red kind) waiting for me at home after tennis practice on the summer. So now that Nashville is getting hot as…(insert noun here), I have to have it. And of course, I needed some flan as well.

Simepre habia un bowl de jalea (roja) esperandome en el refrigerador despues de los entrenamientos de tenis durante el verano. Asi que ahora que Nashville se esta poniendo calentito como horno, nececito mi jalea. Y claro, un flancito tambien.

Luckily I found a few boxes of both in our pantry, nothing like simple stuff. Simple food is usually the best tasting food!

Por suerte encontre una cajas en la despensa, nada como la comida simple. Las cosas simples siempre saben mejor!

So for those that haven’t tried to make either jello or flan here is what I did (its going to blow your mind!!!!!!…….no, not really)

Asi que para aquellos que nunca han intentado preparar jalea o flan, esto es lo que hize. (Preparense para quedar sorprendidos!!!….no, no pasa nada)

Jello is easy…follow the instructions in the box. Really, you cant mess it up!

Hacer jalea es facil…sigue las instrucciones en la caja. No pueder hacerlo mal!

Flan is easy to make too. In a pan, start heating up 4 cups of milk. Once the milk is warm, add the flan powder stirring non-stop. Turn up the heat and wait until it boils (always stirring).

Hacer flan es facil tambien. En una olla, calienta 4 tazas de leche. Cuando la leche este tibia, agrega el flan batiendo sin parar. Aumenta el fuego y espera a que hierva (siempre revolviendo).

When the milk starts boiling, the foam is gonna go UP-UP-UP so keep a close eye and take the pan off the fire before you stove turns into a mess!

Cuando la leche hierve la espuma sube muy muy rapido, asi que mucho atencion para sacar la olla del fuego antes que tu cocina se convierta en un desastre!

Put some caramel in your bowls and pour the flan.

Pon caramelo en los bowls and luego el flan.

Put in the fridge and wait for the milk to solidify and turn into deliciouness in a bowl!

Al refrigerador y esperar que se solidifique y se convienrta en una delicia!

Leslie’s aunt knows a recipe to make flan w/o the box, so that’s the next food project. In the meantime, I will keep enjoying boxed stuff!

La tia de Leslie sabe preparar flan, asi que ese va a ser nuestro proximo proyeto…Por mientras, seguire disfrutando el flan en cajita!
