| Last year we didn’t bother planting a fall garden – we let our summer garden die and then started planting cold season crops in January when we started up our landscaping project. This year we decided to plant two kinds of lettuce and spinach for the fall, and when the temperatures really drop we’ll be able to put our cold frames back into use. We had to clear out the bed full of cutting flowers (zinnias, 4 o’clocks, cosmos, sunflowers), which helped officially declare the end of summer, and then we tilled the soil and added new compost to the mix. We planted plenty of lettuce and spinach seeds, and we already have little sprouts covering the entire bed. Soon we’ll have homegrown salads again! I loved that back in the spring. | El ano pasado no nos preocupamos de hacer una huerta de otono – dejamos que la huerta de verano muriera y empezamos a plantar vegetales de clima fresco a principios de primavera cuando trabajabamos en las plantas del exterior de la casa. Este ano decidimos sembrar dos tipos de lechuga y espinaca para el otono, y cuando las temperaturas bajen en el invierno usaremos los marcos plasticos como invernadero. Tuvimos que limpiar una de las jardineras que usamos para flores, lo que significo la declaracion del final del verano, y luego movimos la tierra y agregamos abono. Sembramos mas que suficentes semillas de lechuga y espinaca, y ya tenemos brotes en la jardinera. Pronto tendremos ensaladas 100% del jardin! Me encato hacer eso en la primavera. |
| We then moved to the front of the house and planted new pansy plants in the half barrels, this time with some creeping Jennys on the sides spilling over the barrel edges. I’ve always pictured hanging plants falling over the sides of the barrels, and we’re hoping that this will keep the pansies from falling over the sides and growing straight up instead. We also have a better idea of how to keep the pansies under control this time. Back in the end of winter we planted a few in the half barrels and they were incredible – they wound up covering the whole barrels in a carpet of color but they got unruly because we never cut back the length of the stems. They eventually wound up overcrowded and spilling over the edges, and we had to cut them back drastically. They never really recovered. Pansies are great for cold weather and they’ll add a nice bit of color to the front yard when everything else is dead, so we’re looking forward to seeing these guys bloom. | Luego nos movimos al frente de la casa y plantamos Pensamientos en los medio-barriles y esta vez agregamos tambien Jennys que cuelgan por los lados del barril. Siempre me he imaginado plantas colgando del borde y esperamos que esto mantenga a los pensamientos creciendo hacia arriba y no los lados. Tambien planeamos mejor esta vez y pusimos menos pensamientos que el ano pasado por barril. A finales del invierno plantamos pensamientos en los barriles y crecieron de manera increible – terminaron cubriendo toda la superficie con una capa de colores pero pronto se salieron de control porque no cortamos los tallos largos. Eventualmente terminaron apretujadas y cayendose por los lados, y tuvimos que hacer un corte drastico. Nunca se recuperaron, Pensamientos son geniales para el clima frio y agregan mucho color al jardin del frente cuando todo lo demas parece muerto. Asi que esperamos con ganas que florezcan. |
| Finally, we uprooted the cosmos in the pots up front on the porch and planted more pansies in two pots outside and mums in the pots inside the porch. I love mums – they are so colorful and perfect for colder weather. We’ll post more photos of these guys as they continue to bloom! | Finalmente, sacamos algunas flores que teniamos en el porch del frente de sus maceteros y pusimos mas pensamientos en 2 de ellos y plantamos crisantemos en 3 mas que estaran dentro del porch. Me encantan los crisantemos, tienen tanto color y son perfectar para el clima fresco de otono. Pondremos mas fotos a medida que todo comienze a florecer! |

Nice Les. Ur house looked great for fall and Halloween. It was fun to b over there w ur mom. We miss u and hope the gigs (right word?) are going good. Love u Grammy
