| Before we left for Colorado, we made a few specific plans for things we absolutely had to do while we were here. I especially wanted to go horseback riding, so Javi did some research online and found Harvard City Riding Stables. It’s about a 15 minute drive from Liar’s Lodge and they do 1 hour, 2 hour, 4 hour and full day riding trips. We decided to do the 4 hour ride – it seems like a long time, but we figured we would have to spend quite a bit of time on a horse in the mountains before it got boring. Four hours seemed like a good bet. | Antes de viajar a Colorado, hicimos planes especificos de cosas que teniamos que hacer sin duda durante nuestra estadia. Yo tenia muchas ganas de andar a caballo, asi que Javi investigo en internet y encontro los establos Harvard City Riding. Quedan como a 15 minutos manejando desde Liar’s Lodge y ofrecen paseos de 1 hora, 2 horas, 4 horas, y dia completo. Nosotros decidimos hacer el viaje de 4 horas – parece mucho tiempo, pero pensamos que nos tomaria mucho tiempo en aburrirnos de andar a caballo en las montanas. Asi que 4 horas parecio una apuesta correcta. |
Meet Joe – our guide from Harvard City Riding Stables! Below is his mule John.
| We arrived at the stable at 8:00 Wednesday morning and met our guide Joe and our mules, Callie and Rosie. Joe explained to us that mules are better off in the mountains because they are sturdier, hardier and smarter. The mules were huge – I always picture mules being closer to the size of donkeys for some reason. Anyway, they were beautiful and had really funny personalities. Callie (Javier’s mule) was the gassiest beast I’ve ever been around – that thing farted the whole way up the mountain! And poor Rosie (my mule) was downwind the whole way. Poor girl. | Llegamos al establo a las 8 el miercoles en la manana y conocimos a nuestro guia, Joe, y a nuestras mulas, Callie y Rosie. Joe nos explico que las mulas son mejores en terreno montanoso porque son mas firmes, duraderas, e inteligentes. Las mulas eran gigantes – simepre me imaginaba mulas del porte de un burro por alguna razon. Pero bueno, eran preciosas y tenian personalidades muy divertidas. Callie (la mula de Javi) era la bestia mas peorra que he visto en mi vida – se tiro peos durante toda la subida a la montana! Y pobre Rosie (mi mula) iba atras de ella toda tiempo. Pobrecita. |

| We drove about 5 minutes up toward Mt. Yale and then parked the car and truck carrying the mules and took off up the mountain. Folks, this was a real trail ride. We were going up hill, down hill, over streams and fallen trunks – it was quite an adventure! We went all the way above the tree line and it was GORGEOUS the whole way. It was really cold in the morning – I kept sliding my hands underneath the saddle to warm them up – but after a couple of hours it was really hot. Javi took pics from his phone and I got some from my camera the whole way up, but on the way down we had to concentrate on staying in the saddle because it was a bumpy, steep ride. The mules were great and really well trained, and our guide Joe was fantastic. He told us all about the mountain, the ins and outs of sheep, goat, bear, deer, mountain lion and elk hunting in Colorado, and he always stopped in the most picturesque spots so we could snap a few photos. It was a lovely afternoon and four hours was just right. | Manejamos mas o menos 5 minutos camino al monte Yale y estacionamos el auto y la camioneta con el carro que transportaba las mulas y de ahi comenzamos a subir. Amigos, este fue un verdadero sendero. Subiamos, bajabamos, cruzabamos riachuelos y troncos caidos – fue una gran aventura! Subimos hasta pasar la linea de los arboles y fue PRECIOSO durante todo el camino. Estaba frio en la manana – yo tenia que poner mis manos bajo la monta para mantenerlas calientes – pero despues de un par de horas se puso caluroso. Javi saco fotos con su telefonoy yo saque algunas con mi camara en la subida, pero en la bajada me tuve que concentrar en mantenerme en la monta porque el camino era con mucho bache y empinado en algunos lugares. Las mulas se portaron fantasticas, muy bien entrenadas, y nuestro guia, Joe, estuvo genial. Nos hablo sobre las montanas, muchos detalles sobre caza de oveja, cabra, osos, venado, pumas, y elk en Colorado, y siempre se detuvo en los mejores lugares para que pudieramos sacar fotos. Fue una tarde genial y 4 horas fue el tiempo perfecto. |
