Copenhagen Zoo!

One of our favorite things to do when we visit a new city is to go to the local zoo. The Copenhagen zoo was a great surprise for us. It was a little far, but we didn’t mind the walk as long as we could see some cool animals. The main attractions were the polar bears, the elephants, and the African Savannah, but they had a lot of other enclosures that caught our attention. The chimpanzees, baboons, and brown bears were really fascinating to see, and they had a butterfly enclosure with hundreds of them flying around and tropical plants surrounding the area…it felt magical! Another great thing about the zoo in the spring was that there were so many baby animals! We saw baby brown bears, a baby elephant, lemurs, baboons, chimps, lion cubs, and three tiger cubs…so cute!

Una de las cosas favoritas para nosotros cuando visitamos una nueva ciudad es ir al zoologico local. El zoo de Copenhague fue una sorpresa para nosotros. Quedaba un poco lejos, pero no nos importo caminar harto si es que podiamos ver animales. Las atraciones principales eran los osos polares, los elefantes, y la Savana Africana, pero tenian un monton de otras atraciones que nos llamaron la atencion. Los chimpanses, babuns, y osos pardos fueron fascinantes de ver, y tenian una sala de mariposas con cientos de ellas volando a tu alrededor y rodeado de plantas tropicales…se sentia como algo magico! Otra gran cosas del zoo es que como era primavera, habian un monton de animales bebes! Vimos ositos pardos, un bebe elefante, lemurcitos, babuncitos, chimpanses bebes, leoncitos, y tres tigritos…muy tiernos!!

We arrived at 11:30 am and the animals were very active. We found out that feeding time started at 1:30 so they were waiting for the chefs to finish cooking. Quick tip: don’t go to the zoo after feeding, the animals will be taking a siesta! The polar bear was the first big attraction we saw and it was amazing! There was a male and a female, and they had a decent amount of land and a nice swimming area. You can go down into the swimming area into an all-glass tunnel to see them swim. It was a great spectacle! For lunch…they got a half goat that they ate it (in front of us) like it was a piece of lettuce.

Llegamos a las 11:30 y los animales estaban muy activos. Nos enteramos que los alimentaban a las 1:30 asi que estaban esperando los por cocineros que terminaran de preparer la comida. Un pequeno consejo: no vayan al zoo despues de que alimentan a los animales, porque todos duermen siesta! El oso polar fue la primera gran atraciones que vimos y era increible! Tenian un macho y una hembra, y tenian una buena cantidad de espacio y una buena piscine. Se podia bajar a la piscina donde tienen un tunel de vidrio donde se les puede ver nadir. Fue un gran espectaculo! Para el almuerzo… les dieron mitad de una cabra y se la comieron (frente a nosotros) como si fuera un pedazo de lechuga.

The brown bears had a great space as well, but the female and her little cub where separated from the massive male bear (we didn’t ask why). It seemed he was really bummed about the separation – he kept getting up on his hindquarters to peek over at them. The lions were lazy, all laying around and resting. For lunch they got a half zebra, tasty! It was weird to see the zebra lying there right in front of us – the American zoos wouldn’t do that I don’t think, but it’s probably pretty educational for the kids. The reptile house was fun to see and the chimps were really funny jumping around, bouncing off walls, and playing with each other. We were very impressed by the social interaction of baboons; they had one alpha male, about 6 females, and a bunch of little fellas. Nobody messed with the male, if he moved everyone got out of his way and only females got close to him in case he was in the mood for some “cuddling”.

El oso pardo tambien tenia un buen espacio, pero la hembra y el cachorro estaban separados del macho (no preguntamos porque). Parecia que el estaba triste por la separacion – porque no paraba de parase para intentar mirar al otro lado de la muralla. Los leones estaban flojos, hechados y durmiendo. Para el almuerzo les dieron mitad de una zebra, delicioso! Fue raro ver una zebra en pedazos frente a nosotros – los zoos Americanos no harian eso, no creemos, pero lo mas seguro es que es muy educacional para los ninos. La casa de los reptiles era entretenida y los chimpanses muy divertidos saltando, dando botes de las murallas y jugando unos con otros. Quedamos muy impresionados con la interaccion social de los babuns; tenian un macho alfa, mas o menos 6 hembras, y un monton de pequenitos. Nadie molestaba al macho, si se movia todos se salian de su camino y solo las hembras se le acercaban en caso que tuviera ganas de “abrazarlas” un poquito.

The elephants had a huge house with indoor and outdoor space. They moved around quite a bit and the pack had about 7 members plus a little baby. The African Savannah had zebras, rhinos, giraffes, antelope, and gazelles living together in this massive piece of land. The rhinos were enormous and very active. Seeing one of these tanks run towards us was a very unsettling experience! But it was cool to see him run – we had never seen such restless rhinos before. We also went into the farm exhibit and they had a couple of really happy cows hanging out in an enclosure! That was a first for us, to see a cow in a zoo. Pretty funny. In that same area we went into the petting zoo and Leslie fell head over heels in love with the pygmy goats…they were pretty cute.

Los elefantes tenian una tremenda casa con espacio interior y exterior. Se movian bastante y el grupo era de 7 miembros mas el bebe. La Savanah Africana tenia zebras, rinocerontes, jirafas, antilopes, y gazelas viviendo juntos en un tremendo espacio. Los rinocerontes eran gigantes y muy activos. Ver a uno de esos tanques correr hacia nosotros fue una experiencia preocupante! Pero fue genial verlo – nunca habiamos visto algo asi. Tambien fuimos a la Granja donde tenian un par de vacas pasandolo bien! Fue la primera vez que vimos vacas en un zoo. Muy divertido. En esa misma area fuimos al lugar donde se podia tocar a los animales y Leslie se enamoro de las cabritas pigmeas…son muy tiernas.

We had so much fun at the Copenhagen zoo. Everything was well maintained, the animals looked healthy and the zoo staff seemed to take excellent care of them. Parents were very respectful with their children in terms of teaching them to behave well in the zoo, no hitting the walls, no throwing things, no trying to hit butterflies, they showed them the value of being good to other creatures and children were very receptive and respectful. That is something we always enjoy seeing, especially since the conservation efforts are directed towards the future generations.

Lo pasamos genial en el zoo de Copenhague. Todo estaba muy bien mantenido, los animales se veian sanos y la gente del zoo parece cuidarlos muy bien. Los padres eran muy respetuosos con sus ninos en cuanto a ensenarles como comportase en el zoo, nada de golpear los vidrios, tirar cosas, nada de golpear a las mariposas, les ensenaban lo valioso que es ser bueno con otras criaturas y los ninos eran muy receptivos y respetuosos. Eso es algo que siempre disfrutamos, especialmente porque los esfuerzos de conservacion son dirigidos a las futuras generaciones.

Singing in Denmark

We wound up taking this trip to Copenhagen because my dad was invited by the National Church of Copenhagen to speak at a preaching conference. He had done this before and last year he played a little music for the entertainment evening of the conference. The conference-goers were so pleased with his lectures and music that they invited him back again this year – and they asked him to put together a band to play a full concert for the conference! Dad billed me as the singer, and so we all came out to Copenhagen together.

Vinimos a Copenhague porque mi papa fue invitado por la Iglesia Nacional de Copenhague a dar unas charlas en una conferencia de predicado. El ha hecho esto antes y el ano pasado toco un poco de musica como entretenimiento una noche de la conferencia. La gente que fue a esa conferencia quedaron tan contentos con sus charlas y su musica que lo invitaron de Nuevo este ano – y le pidieron que organizara una banda para tocar un concierto completo para todo el mundo! Mi papa me contrato como cantante, y asi todos vinimos a Copenhague juntos.

My work for the week consisted of singing with dad during two services, one on Tuesday morning and another on Thursday morning, and then singing in the concert for an hour and a half on Wednesday night. The conference organizers put together a backup band for my dad and me with amazing musicians from around Copenhagen, and we were able to get one rehearsal in on Tuesday night. The whole set list was mostly blues with some gospel thrown in and a few folk Bob Dylan, Janis Joplin songs. The venue was inside a church built in the 1600s – so beautiful! I never thought I’d get to sing Me and Bobby McGee in an old European church…

Mi trabajo para la semana consistio en cantar con mi papa durante dos ceremonias, una el Martes en la manana y otra en Jueves en la manana, y luego cantar en el concierto durante una hora y media el Miercoles en la noche.. Los organizadores de la conferencia pusieron una banda para mi papa y yo con musicos muy buenos de Copenhague, y pudimos ensayar el martes en la noche. La lista de canciones era la mayoria blues con un poco de gospel y folk de Bob Dylan y Janis Joplin por ahi. El lugar escogido para el concierto fue una igleasi construida en los 1600s – tan preciosa! Nunca pense que cantaria Me and Bobby McGee en una Antigua iglesia europea…

The concert was so much fun for me and my dad. The band was excellent, the crowd was great and we had the doors in the back of the church open so passersby would stop in for a song or two. We brought 10 of my CDs over to sell and we sold them in about 5 minutes after the show, which afforded us a little more spending money for the flea market (more on that in another post!). The crowd was so gracious and fun to play for – and we met four really awesome girls that I’ll never forget! These girls already knew some of my music because Sophie, one of them, was the daughter of the conference organizer Charlotte. They had already heard my music through my dad the previous year and she came and brought some of her girlfriends – so sweet!

El concierto fue muy entretenido para mi y mi papa. La banda era excelente, la gente genial, y se abrieron las puertas de la iglesia para que los transeuntes pudieran entrar si querian escuchar un par de canciones. Trajimos 10 Cds para vender y se fueron en un par de minutos despues del show, lo que significo un poquito mas de plata para gastar en la feria de las pulgas (mas sobre eso en otro post!) La gente que vino era muy amable y disfrute cantando para ellos – y tambien conocimos cuatro chicas muy geniales que nunca olvidare! Ellas ya conocian mi musica porque Sophie, una de ellas, es la hija de la organizadora de la conferencia, Charlotte. Ellas ya habian escuchado mi musica por mi papa el ano anterior y ella vino al concierto y trajo a sus amigas – tan tiernas!

This was definitely one of the highlights of the trip. I can now say that I’ve played music with my dad on three continents – once in Europe, once in a blues bar in Valparaiso, Chile and of course throughout the U.S. What a life!

Rosenborg Castle and the Crown Jewels

One of our excursions was to the Rosenborg Castle, which was right across the street from the botanical gardens and only a few blocks from our hotel. Rick Steves had rated this attraction pretty high, and I was interested in seeing the crown jewels! So we took our cameras and headed out to the castle to see how the Danish royals lived til the 1900s.

Una de nuestras excursiones fue ir al Castillo Rosenborg, el cual estaba al frente de el jardin botanico y solo a unas cuadras de nuestro hotel. Rick Steves (un escritor de turismo) en su ranking de atraciones tenia este lugar como uno de los puntos altos y yo estaba interesada en ver las joyas de la corona! Asi que tomamos las camaras y nos fuimos al Castillo para ver como la realeza Danesa vivio hasta los 1900s.

Inside the castle we toured every room on three different floors. It’s amazing how close you can get to every item – they aren’t blocked with glass and many of the exhibits aren’t roped off. It was SO tempting for me to sit on chairs and touch the artifacts…in fact at one point I couldn’t resist and I touched a sword to see if it was still sharp…and it was. And I got yelled at. Oops! Anyway, it was incredible to see everything so up close and personal. I was able to get some really fun photos around the castle for your viewing pleasure.

Dentro del Castillo paseamos por cada cuarto de los tres diferentes pisos. Es incredible lo cerca que se puede estar de cada objeto – no estan bloqueados por vidrios y muchas de las presentaciones no estan cercadas con cuerdas. Era TAN tentador sentarse en una de las sillas y tocar los artefactos…de hecho en un momento no me pude resistir y toque una espada par aver si todavia tenia filo…y si lo tenia! Y me gritaron que no podia tocar. Ups! Pero bueno, fue increible ver todo tan de cerca. Pude sacar algunas buenas fotos alrededor del Castillo para disfrutar.

The throne room was amazing, and we were lucky that not many tourists were in there so I was able to get some cool shots of it without gawking tourists. After the throne room we went down into the treasury in the basement and saw the crown jewels – and a million other jewels and jeweled swords and sword hilts – it was incredible! Photos don’t do it all justice, but you get the idea.

La sala del trono era increible, y tuvimos la suerte de que no muchos turistas estaban ahi asi que pude sacar buenas fotos sin turistas arruinando la foto. Despues del trono, bajamos al Tesoro en el subterraneo donde vimos las joyas de la corona – y un millon de otras joyas y espadas y decoraciones personales – fue increible! Las fotos no hacen justicia, pero dan una idea.

The castle was beautiful and it was surrounded by a gorgeous park and rose garden, full of mama ducks with their ducklings and other birds flying around a sweet pond. After we left the castle we walked around the grounds for a bit taking photos and checking out the roses – actually we were sad to see that two of the rose bushes had rosette! Of course Javier would spot that kind of thing…but all in all a beautiful afternoon! Definitely well worth the visit!

El Castillo era hermoso y estaba rodeado por hermosos parques y jardines de rosas, llenos de mamas patos y sus patitos y otros pajaros disfrutando de la laguna. Despues que dejamos el Castillo, caminamos alredor de la propiedad para sacar algunas fotos y ver las rosas – la verdad es que nos dio pen aver que varias de las rosas tenian rosette! Claro que Javier se daria cuenta de esas cosas…pero despues de todo fue una tarde muy linda! Definitivamente vale la pena visitar!

Tivoli Gardens

One of our Copenhagen excursions was a trip to the crazy Tivoli Gardens – a really cool theme park right in the middle of the city. Once inside the walls of Tivoli, it’s hard to imagine that this place is right in the midst of the hustle and bustle of the city – it’s got a totally different vibe inside from the rest of Copenhagen. The theme park is designed so that kids and adults can enjoy themselves – it’s an equal opportunity entertainment provider. Unlike the theme parks in the U.S., there are a number of reasonably-priced, sweet restaurants where adults can grab a bite (and even really good beer, there’s a microbrewery! More on that later…). We paid the entrance fee that didn’t include tickets to ride – we never wanted to ride any of the roller coasters…no death wishes here, thank you very much!

Una de nuestras aventuras en Copenhague fue un paseo por los jardines Tivoli – un parque de diversiones muy genial en la mitad de la ciudad. Una vez dentro de las murallas de Tivoli, es dificil imaginarse que este lugar esta en medio de la locura que ocurre en el centro de la ciudad – tiene un ambiente completamente diferente al resto de Copenhague. El parque esta disenado tanto para ninos como para adultos, asi todo el mundo puede disfrutar del dia – es un lugar de entretenimiento equalitario. A diferencia de los parques de diversion en los Estados Unidos, este lugar tiene varios restaurantes con buenos precios donde los adultos pueden disfrutar de buena comida (e incluso buena cerveza, porque hay una microcerveceria! Mas sobre eso despues…). Pagamos el precio de la entrada que no incluia tickets para las atracciones – no queriamos subirnos a nada…no queriamos una sentencia de muerte gracias!

The park is really beautiful, with gardens, a lake, several beautiful water fountains, cool decor, and hundreds of lanterns and decorative lights everywhere. We stopped once at a cool little gazebo where a band was playing marimba and mandolin – it was a really cool, ethereal sound that added to the ambiance of this weird, scenic park. We stopped and got a beer at one point in a little garden on one side of the lake, then later moseyed on over to the microbrewery on the other side where mom and dad enjoyed a couple gigantic brews. Javi and I opted for ice cream instead, which we think was a pretty good decision.

El parque es realmente hermoso, con jardines, una laguna, varias fuentes, lindas decoraciones, y cientos de linternas y lamparas decorativas por todos lados. Nos detuvimos en una pergola donde una banda tocaba musica con marimba y mandolin – tocaban genial, un sonido etereo que complementaba el extrano ambiente del parque. Paramos a beber una cerveza en un minuto en un pequeno jardin junto a la laguna, y luego nos fuimos en camino a la microcerveceria donde mi mama y papa se tomaron unas cervezas enormes. Javier y yo preferimos tomarnos un helado, lo que yo creo fue una muy buena decision.

When the sun started setting, the lights all came on around the park. It was really beautiful, and I ran around the park taking photos of every angle that I had already captured in the daytime just to document the light change. It was a beautiful evening! We had a lovely few hours there. It was also really nice because we went on a Monday, and the park wasn’t crowded at all. We passed by the park again on Thursday and there were hundreds of people lined up to get tickets…so if you’re ever planning to visit Copenhagen, we highly recommend going earlier in the week. There aren’t as many entertainment shows (we hear there’s rock music and fireworks on Friday, and puppet shows to boot) but we entertained ourselves just fine, and it was much better without the crowds!

Cuando el sol comenzo a bajar, las luces se encendieron en todo el parquet. Era muy bonito, y corri por todo el parque sacando fotos de todos los angulos que ya habia capturado durante el dia solo para poder documentar el cambio de luz. Fue una noche preciosa! Pasamos hermosas horas en Tivoli. Tambien fue comodo que fuimos un lunes y el parque no estaba replete. Pasamos por que el parque el Jueves y habian cientos de personas en la fila de los boletos…asi que si planean visitar Copenhague, recomendamos ir a Tivoli a principio de semana. No hay muchos shows (aprendimos que hay rock y fuegos artificiales los viernes, y show de titeres otros dias) pero nosotros nos entretuvimos solos sin problemas, y fue mucho mejor no estar en medio de la multitud!

Copenhagen Botanical Gardens

It is no surprise that by now Leslie and I have developed a strong interest in plants. Luckily for us, our hotel was just a couple of blocks from Copenhagen’s botanical gardens (we didn’t know until we found it on a map after a couple of days). The garden is a beautiful park, free, and the perfect place to have a picnic, take a walk, or simply lie down and relax. We have been very fortunate to have great weather this whole trip – no rain at all and mostly sunny, which is really unusual for Copenhagen.

No es sorpresa que ahora Leslie y yo hemos desarrollado un gran interes en plantas. Por suerte para nosotros nuestro hotel estaba solo a un par de cuadras del Jardin Botanico de Copenhague (no sabiamos hasta que lo descubrimos en el mapa un par de dias despues). El jardin es un parque espectacular, gratis, y el lugar perfecto para hacer un picnic, salir a caminar, o simplemente hecharse y relajarse. Hemos tenido muy buena suerte con el tiempo en este viaje – nada de lluvia y la mayoria de los dias soleados, lo que es inusual para Copenhague.

While John was working, Annie, Leslie and I went to the gardens to check them out and have a quiet afternoon before Leslie’s show. We saw so many different plants, some that we have never seen before, some similar to plants to ones we already knew and some identical to some we actually have in our home.

Mientras John trabajaba, Annie, Leslie y yo fuimos al jardin a visitarlo y tener una tarde tranquila antes del show de Leslie. Vimos muchas plantas diferentes, algunas que nunca antes habiamos visto, algunas similares a plantas que ya conocemos, y otras identicas a algunas que tenemos en nuestra casa.

The most impressive thing we found was the greenhouse. We are not talking about a typical little greenhouse – this thing was a castle! The Taj Mahal of greenhouses. Inside it has 5 different microclimates, and since we didn’t have much time, we only walked around their tropical room. It was humid, and HOT! This was the central room and we could climb up to the top of the greenhouse to see everything from above. I was terrified; I don’t do heights very well.

La cosa mas impresionante que encontramos fue el invernadero. No estamos hablando de un invernadero tipico – este era un palacio! El Taj Mahal de los invernaderos. Adentro tenia 5 microclimas, y como no teniamos mucho tiempo, solo caminamos por la sala tropical. Era humeda y CALUROSA! Esta era la sala central y se podia subir al tope del invernadero para ver todo desde arriba. Yo estaba asustado; no me gustan las alturas.

It was a great experience and the plants were fabulous. Needless to say, the gardens outside were just as impressive with sections dedicated to different regions of the world. The Danes know how to take advantage of the sunny days so everyone was outside hanging out and enjoying the peaceful environment at the Copenhagen Botanical Gardens!

Fue una gran experiencia y las plantas fabulosas. Esta de mas decir que los jardines afuera era tan impresionantes como el invernadero, con secciones dedicadas a diferentes regiones del mundo. Los Daneses saben como sacar ventaja de los dias soleados asi que todo el mundo estaba afuera pasando el rato y disfrutando del tranquilo ambiente que ofrece el Jardin Botanico de Copenhague.

Canal tour of Copenhagen

On Monday morning we all set out for the canal to take a canal tour. We’re extremely good at getting lost, but my mom and Javier are obsessed with their Copenhagen maps. So while dad and I meander around the city in our own worlds taking photos, mom and Javi would stop about every 100 yards and check the map again, trying to figure out which turn took us off the route and where we went awry. It’s always an adventure getting anywhere…and the streets of Copenhagen (that never go straight for more than 10 feet) don’t help. But it’s a beautiful city and we’re enjoying taking it all in!

El Lunes en la manana salimos camino al canal para hacer un tour en bote. Somos muy buenos para perdernos, pero mi mama y Javier estan obsesionados con sus mapas de Copenhagen. Asi que mientras mi papa y yo deambulabamos por el camino en nuestras propias burbujas y tomando fotos, mama y Javi nos paraban cada 100 metros para revisar los mapas intentando ver donde estabamos y que esquina nos saco de ruta y nos despisto. Es siempre una aventura ir a culquier parte….y las calles de Copenhagen (que nunca son derechas mas de 5 metros) no ayudan. Pero es una ciudad hermosa y disfrutamos todo lo que ofrece!

Once we got to the canal, we bypassed the first boat company because it costs twice as much as the second one (thank you Rick Steves!) and we got in line for our canal tour. People are vicious in lines without ropes – we had to stand 4-wide to keep people from cutting in front of us in the end! It got really old, but we finally got onto our canal and it was fabulous! The weather was perfect yet again, but it was a bit windy out on the water so if anyone is planning on doing this tour I recommend a sweatshirt even on a warm day! I had to borrow Javier’s.

Cuando llegamos al canal, nos saltamos la primera compania de botes porque cuesta el doble que la segunda (gracias Rick Steves!) y nos pusimos a la cola para el tour. La gente es pilla cuando hay colas sin cuerdas a los lados – tuvimos que pararnos en linea para bloquear a cualquiera que se quisiera colar! Nos estabamos aburriendo ya, pero al final nos subimos a nuestra bote y salimos rumbo a la bahia que es fabulosa! El tiempo estaba perfecto una vez mas, pero habia un poco de viento en la bahia abierta asi que si alguien esta planeando en hacer este tour, les recomiendo que lleven un poleron o chaleco incluso si hace calor! Yo tuve que usar el de Javier.

There were two guides offering translated bits of information – every fact was translated from Danish to English to German. The first building we passed on the water was a beautiful new theater that was only recently finished – a completely modern, environmentally-friendly building with glass panels all around that reflect the water. The building is cooled down in the summer by the water in the canal and warmed up in the winter via stage lights and body heat. I love this city!

Habian dos guias que daban datos de los edificios y lugares en ingles, aleman y danes. El primer edificio que pasamos en el agua fue el nuevo teatro que ha sido terminado recientemente – completamente moderno, amigable con el medio ambiente, y con paneles de vidrio que reflejaban el agua. El edificio es enfriado en el verano con el agua del canal y en el invierno se calienta con las luces del escenario y el calor corporal de la audiencia. Me encanta esta ciudad!

The next incredible building we passed was a new opera house that a wealthy family donated to the city. It’s gorgeous – I’d love to go inside and see an opera but I don’t want to think about how much money that would set us back! Speaking of money, we also passed an old navy hangar that was recently converted into new modernized lofts that are worth between 1.5 and 3 million dollars (U.S.). Pretty sweet!

El proximo edificio increible que pasamos fue la nueva opera que una familia adinerada dono a la ciudad. Es preciosa – me gustaria entrar y escuchar un show pero no quiero pensar cuanto cuesta hacerlo! Hablando de dinero, tambien pasamos un astilladero antiguo de la armada que fue recientemente convertido en modernos departamentos que cuestan entre 1.5 y 3 millones de dolares. Muy genial!

We then went past office buildings that were old shelters for boats during the Napoleonic Wars. They are such simple structures but it’s pretty cool that they weren’t destroyed. We drove past the Little Mermaid statue, but the photos didn’t really come out – we weren’t close enough to see the details of the statue and a ton of people were posing with her so really it looked like a photo of a group of kids smiling at their parents holding cameras. Oh well! We drove past the royal palace and through a couple of beautiful neighborhoods before finally making it back. The whole tour lasted about 75 minutes and we loved every bit of it. Definitely put it on the schedule if you’re ever visiting Copenhagen!

Pasamos los edificios de oficinas que eran los antiguos refugios de barcos durante las guerras Napoleonicas. Eran estructuras simpes pero muy interesantes por el hecho de que no hayan sido destruidas. Pasamos por la estatua de la sirenita, pero las fotos no salieron bien – no estabamos lo suficientemente cerca como para ver los detalles de la estatua y un monton de gente estaba posando con ella asi que solo parece como un grupo de ninos sonriendo a sus padres que sostenian camaras. Pero bueno…Pasamos el palacio real y por un par de vecindarios pintorescos antes de volver al puerto. El tour completo duro mas o menos 75 minutos y disfrutamos cada segundo. Definitivamente ponganlo en los planes si visitan Copenhagen!

Carlsberg Brewery Museum

One thing you must know about my in-laws is that they love beer. Not in a “let’s get drunk” kind of way, but in a “let’s enjoy a good beer” way. The best known brewery in Copenhagen is Carlsberg, and luckily John and Annie hadn’t yet visited it so it was a great opportunity to do something new for everyone.

Algo que deben saber sobre mis suegros es que les encanta la cerveza. No como “emborrachemosnos!” pero mas como “disfrutemos una buena cerveza”. La cerveceria mas conocida en Copenhagen es Carlsberg, y por suerte John y nnie no la habian visitado aun. Asi que era una gran oportunidad para hacer algo nuevo para todos.

So we decided on our first day in Copenhagen to head out to the old brewery site where Carlsberg offers tours of their older facilities and a museum. We arrived there at around 1pm planning on having lunch and drinking a few beers in the afternoon. We walked about 3 miles to get to the site (mainly because we got lost) and once we arrived we noticed the great the architecture of the place.

Asi que en nuestor primer dia en Copenhagen decidimos visitar la antigua cerveceria donde Carlsberg ofrece tours de la fabrica y un museo de la compania. Llegamos mas o menos a la 1 con el plan de almorzar y tomarnos unas cervezas en la tarde. Caminamos como 5 kilometros para llegar al lugar (principalmente porque nos perdimos) y una vez que llegamos nos dimos cuenta de la gran arquitectura del lugar.

We thought the tour would be of the actual brewing process, but they no longer brew on that site. So the tour was of a museum that showed how the brewery evolved and how Carlsberg beer has impacted Copenhagen’s history. The Carlsberg legacy has affected everything in the city – from the city’s economy, to developing beer brewing technology and beer science worldwide, to enhancing and endorsing national arts, architecture, and community development. We were really happy to learn more than just about brewing – we got a good Copenhagen history lesson as well.

Pensamos que el tour seria sobre el proceso de hacer cerveza, pero ya no fermentan as en este lugar. Asi que el tour era mas que nada del museo que mostraba como Carlsberg ha evolucionado con el tiempo y el impacto que ha tenido en la historia de Copenhagen. El legado de Carlsberg ha afetado todo en la ciudad – desde su economia, al desarrollo de technologias de fermentacion y ciencias de la cerveza a nivel mundial, a desarrollo de las artes nacionales, arquitectura, y desarrollo comunitario. Estabamos felices de aprender mas que solo cerveza – fue una clase de historia de Copenhagen tambien.

Part of the tour takes you to a room that hosts over 22,000 beer bottles. This is the largest collection of beer bottles in the world. We didn’t look one by one, but the sight of shelves and shelves full of beer bottle was pretty amazing.We learned that workers in the old factory used to get their personal kegs filled up with everyday (2 liters) at the beginning of their shift. Now that is a nice perk!

Parte del tour te lleva a una sala que mantiene una coleccion de 22,000 botellas de cervezas diferentes. Esta es la collecion de botellas de cerveza mas grande del mundo. No miramos las botellas una por una, pero ver repisas y repisas llenas es impresionante.Aprendimos que los trabajdores de la antigua cerveceria recibian un jarron personal de cerveza lleno (2 litros) al comienzo de cada jornada laboral. Ahora eso es un beneficio del trabajo!

Of course…two of our favorite parts of the tour were: lunch time and the 2 beers included in the ticket price. For lunch we sat on one of their patios and tried smoked salmon sandwich and a sausage. Folks…that grilled sausage was a highlight of the day! The beers we were able to taste were delicious, we tried a Jacobsen Ale and a Tuborg. These two brands make up part of the Carlsberg portfolio of beers. After tasting these beers we are quickly growing a Carlsberg addiction.

Claro…la parte favorita del tour fueron el almuerzo y las 2 cervezas incluidas en la entrada. Para el almuerzo nos sentamos en uno de los patios y probamos el sandwich de salmon ahumado y una longaniza. Amigos…esa longaniza fue una de las mejores que hemos probado! Las cervezas que probamos estaban deliciosas, probamos la Jacobsen Ale y una Tuborg. Estas dos marcas son parte del portafolio de cervezas de Carlsberg. Despues de probar estas cervezas nos estamos volviendo adictos a Carlsberg.

At the end of the tour we stopped by the gift shop to get a couple of souvenirs. On our way out, we walked by Carl Jacobsen’s garden, which had a big hill. This hill had a great impact in the name to the brand, “berg” means hill or mountain, so Carlsberg is the beer made in this hill by Carl. The park was beautiful, full of great flowers, big trees, and everything blooming. This was just the perfect way to finish our trip to the brewery. If you are visiting Copenhagen and have some interest in beer, we absolutely recommend visiting Carlsberg brewery!

Al final del tour pasamos por el gift shop para comprar un par de souvenirs. En el camino de vulta, pasamos por el jardin de Carl Jacobsen, el cual tiene una loma. Esta loma tiene un gran impacto en el nombre de la marca “berg” significa monte o montana, asi que Carlsberg is la cerveza hecha en esta loma por Carl. El parke es muy lindo, lleno de flores, arboles enormes, y todo floreciendo. Esta fue la manera perfecta de terminar el paseo por la cerveceria. Si visitan Copenhagen y tienen algo de interes en cerveza, les recomendamos visitar Carlsberg!

En route to Denmark

Here we are in Denmark! The excitement of being in Europe for the first time with Javier is finally hitting me – I spent a little too much thought and energy dreading the flight to really think about how much fun we are going to have here with my parents! Javier and I always wondered when we would ever get the chance to go to Europe together, since the international trips we’re most likely to take when we have the money is to go to Chile to visit his parents. Then this opportunity came along – my dad was hired to speak at a conference here and they asked him to put together a Nashville band to play a concert at the conference. They flew me out here and covered room / board, and my honorarium almost covered all of Javier’s ticket! So it was a perfect chance for us to get to Europe together – who knows when we’ll be able to again.

Aqui estamos en Dinamarca! La emocion de estar en Europa por primera vez con Javier por fin me ha pegdo – pase mucho tiempo y gaste much energia pensando en lo horrible que seria el vuelo, en vez de lo bien que lo vamos a pasar con mis papas! Javier y yo siempre pensabamos cuando tendriamos la oportunidad de ir a Europa juntos, ya que cualquier viaje internacional que podamos hacer, lo mas seguro es que sea a Chile a visitar a su familia. Luego esta oportunidad surgio – mi papa fue conratado para hablar en una conferencia en Copenhagen y tambien le pidieron que armara una banda musical de Nashville para tocar en un concierto en la conferencia. Me pagaron el pasaje, comida, y estadi, y mi honorario cubrio casi todo el pasaje de Javier! Asi que fue la oportunidad perfecta para venir a Europa juntos – quien sabe cuando sera la proxima vez.

I’ve been to many countries in Europe thanks to my study abroad experience back in the summer of 2005 in London, the spring semester of 2006 in Spain and then my subsequent return to Europe in 2007 and 2010 to visit friends. This is my first time in Copenhagen, and we’ll be staying here for ta few days. My dad has been here twice before so he knows his way around enough to know some of the fun things to do, and we’ll definitely do some exploring.

He estado en varios paises de Europa gracias y mi estudio internacional en el verano del 2005 en Londres y la primavera del 2006 en Espana. Tambien regrese el 2007 a visitar amigos. Esta es mi primera vez en Copenhagen, y nos quedaremos por varios dias. Mi papa ha sido contratado dos veces antes asi que el sabe como moverse y conoce de cosas entretenidas para hacer y seguro que exploraremos un poco.

The trip was fairly uneventful – the flight to Chicago was no fun because it was storming and we were in one of those teeny tiny American Airline planes (never again!). Once we got on to the flight to Denmark I had a beer and slept for about 6 of the 7 hours we were in the air. I only woke up for meals! It was great. Javier didn’t get as much sleep, so at first we just hung out in the hotel while he napped. Then we left to explore the city with my parents – obviously I was eager to get my camera out into the city! We decided that the cheapest route to beer and pretty views was to take a 6-pack of Carlsberg to the canal and sit and watch the sunset behind the beautiful architecture. It was a perfect, relaxing way to end the first day!

El viaje no tuvo mucho problemas, fue bien facil – el viaje a Chicago no fue entretenido porque habia tormenta y nos pusieron en esos aviones chiquitos de American Airlines (nunca mas!). Una vez que nos subimos al avion rumbo a Dinamarca me tome una cerveza y dormi por 6 de las 7 horas de vuelo. Solo me desperte para comer! Fue genial. Javier no durmió mucho, así que nosotros pasamos un rato en el hotel mientras el dormía siesta. Una vez que despertó salimos a explorar la ciudad con mis papas – obviamente tenia ganas de salir con mi cámara! Decidimos ir por la ruta mas barata de como combinar cervezas y lugares para ver, asi que nos compramos un pack e 6 cervezas y nos sentamos a la orilla del canal a ver la puesta de sol y la arquitectura. Fue perfecto, una manera muy relajante de terminar el dia.

Memorial Day cookout

By the time we got to Memorial Day after that crazy wedding weekend, Javier and I were exhausted but we still wanted to kick off the summer with an inaugural barbecue in the backyard. I invited my parents and a few friends over and we brought out the horseshoe set for a friendly, hardly competitive few games of horseshoe before it got too dark to play. For the record, Justin and I won…not that it matters, but…well. Just so you know.

Cuando llego el dia del memorial, despues de un fin de semana de locos, Javier y yo estabamos muy cansados pero aun asi queriamos comenzar el verano con una parrillada inaugural en el patio. Invite a mis papas y unos cuantos amigos, y trajimos un juego de herraduras para unas partidas amistosamente competitivas antes de que oscureciera. Para que sepan, Justin y yo ganamos…no es que importe…pero bueno, solo para que sepan.

Willie and Alethea brought their sweet doggo Frankie Lou over and our dogs went totally crazy with her – they were still exhausted two days later. Willie brings her over every time Hickory Slims has practice, but it had been at least a couple of months since the last time they were over here and Frankie Lou was still a small pup the last time they saw her. Now she’s full grown and enormous – but has no idea that she could knock Chori out with a whack of her paw. It was fun to see them romping around the back yard again together – so they had just as much fun as we did.

Willie y Alethea trajeron a su dulce perrita Frankie Lou y nuestros perros estaba como locos con ella – despues de 2 dias aun seguien cansados. Willie la trae cada vez que practicamos con Hickory Slims, pero eso no habia pasado hace ya unos meses y Frankie todavia era cachorrita. Ahora esta crecida y enorme – pero no tiene idea que puede sacar volando a Chori. Fue entretenido verlos jugar en el patio juntos – asi que ellos lo pasaron tan bien como nosotros.

After a great evening of grilling out, horseshoe and crazy doggos, we closed off the night with a clean kitchen (shocking!) and a fridge full of leftover beer (thanks to all of you who generously left your brews at our place!). A successful holiday if do say so!

Despues de una gran tarde, herraduras, y perro locos, cerramos la noche con una cocina limpia (sorprendente!) y un refrigerador lleno de sobras y cervezas (gracias a quienes generosamente trajeron cervezas!) Un feriado sumamente exitoso si me preguntan!

Double wedding weekend!

Last weekend was an insane, crazy whirlwind mixture of fun, friends, dresses, cameras, brides and grooms, wine, beer, coffee, exhaustion, second winds, food, music, scenic views and a million other amazing things. Friday kicked off the weekend festivities with Nikita and Jordan’s rehearsal dinner back at Sylvia’s house where her wedding shower was. The whole dinner setup was reminiscent of a movie set and gorgeous down to every minute detail. We walked all around the beautiful home again, this time going downstairs to the wine cellar and upstairs to the roof patio that overlooks the back pool. What a beautiful home! After dinner we spent at least an hour doing open-floor toasts…it took awhile (or at least long enough to down a drink or two) for folks to pluck up the courage to talk in front of everyone, but it seems like everyone at the dinner had a chance to say something about the happy couple. It was a great night!

El fin de semana fue de locos, un remolino que mezclo entretenimiento, amigos, vestidos, camaras, novias y novios, vino, cerveza, cafe, cansancio, energia, comida, musica, paisajes y un millon de otras cosas increibles. El viernes comenzaron las festividades con la cena de ensayo de Nikita y Jordan en casa de Sylvia. La cena completa parecia un set de pelicula y todo estaba precioso, hasta el mas minimo detalle. Paseamos por toda la casa, fuimos al subterraneo donde tenian los vinos y al techo donde tenian una terraza con vista la piscina. Que casa mas hermosa! Despies de la cena, pasamos mas o menos una hora con los brindis…tomo mucho tiempo (o por lo menos suficiente para tomarse un trago o dos) para que los invitados juntaran coraje para hablar frente a todo el mundo, pero parece que cada persona en la cena tuvo la oportunidad de decir algo sobre la feliz pareja. Fue una gran noche!

Nikita and Jordan’s wedding wasn’t until Sunday night, but on Saturday Javier and I had another wedding at DelMonaco Winery, this time were shooting the wedding for Jon and Heather. I shot their engagement photos last summer and was thrilled to do their wedding. It was about an hour and a half outside of Nashville near Cookeville. The weather was perfect – not too hot but very sunny, even cool enough at night for a fire and some s’mores. We got some great shots in the grapevines and had a blast listening to the 25-piece jazz band from Elmhurst College! I’ll have more photos up on the photoblog soon.

La boda de Nikita y Jordan no fue hasta el domingo en la noche, pero el sabado Javier y yo tuvimos otra boda en los vinedos DelMonaco. Esta vez estabamos sacando fotos para Jon y Heather. Les saque fotos de su compromio el verano pasado y estaba con muchas ganas de sacar fotos en su boda. El lugar quedaba mas o menos a una hora y media de Nashville, cerca de Cookeville. El tiempo estaba perfecto – no muy caluroso pero soleado, y en la noche fresco para hacer una fogata. Sacamos muy buenas fotos en la vina y los pasamos genial escuchando la banda de jazz de 25 personas de la universidad Elmhurst! Pondre mas fotos en el blog despues.

On Sunday morning I went back to Sylvia’s to get ready with all the bridesmaids – in a playroom with a castle, no less! Once again we had perfect wedding weather and by 3:00 we were all out at Kingston Farm taking photos and getting ready for the ceremony. I can’t say enough about how beautiful everything was out there – the flowers were incredible (I took a few photos of my bouquet below), the colors were vibrant, the scenery around the ceremony was breathtaking – the whole event was picturesque and exactly how I imagined Nik and Jordan’s wedding would be.

El domingo en la manana volvi a asa de Sylvia para preparame junto con las damas de honor – en un sala de juego que tenia un castillo nada menos! De nuevo un tiempo perfecto para la boda y a las 3pm estabamos en la granja Kingston sacandonos fotos y listos para la ceremonia. No puedo decir lo hermoso que todo estaba – las flores estaban increbile (saque unas fotos de los ramos), los colores vibrantes, el paisaje hermoso – el evento completo fue de pelicula y como me imaginaba seria la boda de Nikita y Jordan.

After the ceremony we all headed out to the side of the barn for cocktail hour and caught up with all our Belmont friends. We had dinner inside the barn and then the band kicked up. They hired Burning Las Vegas, a band that not only has the music down (and plays every cover you can imagine) but also has outfit changes and dance moves for every song. They were amazing! They had us out on the dance floor the entire night – right up til midnight when the party wrapped up (at the farm anyway, there was an after party at Sylvia’s but Javi and I didn’t make it!). We had SO much fun with weddings this weekend – and we are so so happy for the newlyweds! Congratulations Nikita and Jordan!!! and Heather and Jon!!!

Despues de la ceremonia nos fuimos a un lado del granero para tomarnos unos tragos y conversar con nuestros amigos de Belmont. Comimos la cena dentro del granero y la banda comenzo a tocar. Contrataron a Burning Las Vegas, una banda que no solo toca muy bien (y cada cover que te puedas imaginar) pero tambien tenian cambios de vestuario y bailes para cada cancion. Eran increbiles! Nos mantuvieron en la pista de baile toda la noche – justo a la media noche la fiesta termino (en la granja por lo menos, habia una after party en casa de Sylvia, pero Javi y yo no fuimos). Lo pasamos muy bien en estas bodas – y estamos felices por los recien casados! Felicitaciones Nikita y Jordan, y Heather y Jon!!!
