| The garden is looking great and we are really excited to see that most of the plants that we started from seed (corn, sunflowers, and radishes) are growing and growing FAST! I realized that I overwatered some plants, which resulted in a powdery mildew attack on the squash! AHHHHHHH!!! | La huerta se ve genial y estamos muy contentos con el hecho que todas las plantas que empezamos de semilla (choclo, girasoles, y rabanos) estan creciendo y creciendo rapido! Tambien me di cuenta que he estado regando en exceso algunas plantas y debido a eso, hongos estan atacando las plantas de zapallo! AAAAAAAAAAH! |
| The butternut squash and the spaghetti squash are the main victims of this vicious fungus! It made the plants slow their growth, which sucks. So now I have to find a way to help my plants fight the invaders and focus on growing and yielding some veggies for us. The first step is to stop watering for a couple of days (even though it rained yesterday, so that didn’t help) until the ground loses all the extra water. I also ordered a little moisture reader that will help me know if the plants need water or not. It was about $13 on Amazon – not bad for a pretty useful tool. | Los zapallos son las principales victiomas de esta hongo maldito! Hace que las plantas detengan su crecimiento, una lata. Asi que ahora tengo que encontrar una manera de ayudarlas a combatir a los invasores, concentrarce en crecer y en generar frutos para nosotros. El primer paso es dejar de regarlas por unos dias (a pesar que llovia ayer, lo que no me ayudo mucho) hasta que la tierra pierda el exceso de agua. Tambien compre un medidor de humedad que me indicara cuando las plantas necesitan agua. Me costo $13 en amazon – nada mal para una herramienta muy util. |
| Now, to fight the powdery mildew I looked online for solutions. Some called for fungicides, baking soda, and other options…some of them not very organic and a little expensive. I wanted to find something organic and cheap. Luckily, I stumbled upon a few blogs and websites recommending spraying a solution of 1 part fat free milk and 9 parts water. According to these sites, a Brazilian scientist discovered that milk takes care of the mildew (it says to do it weekly until the mildew under control) and that it also nourishes the foliage…PERFECT! So now I am trying that! | Ahora, para combatir el hongo busque soluciones en internet. Algunos recomendaban quimicos para matar hongos, bicarbonato, y otras opciones…algunas de ellas no muy organicas y un poco caras. Queria encontrar algo barato y organico. Por suerte encontre varios blogs y paginas que recomendaban rociar una solucion de leche y agua en las hojas, 1 porcion de leche por 9 de agua. De acuerdo a estos sitios, un cientifico Brasileno descubriop que la leche se encarga del hongo (dice que hay que aplicar una vez a la semana hasta que el hongo esta bajo control) y tambien ayuda a nutrir las hojas…PERFECTO! Asi que estoy probando este remedio! |
| There isn’t much to it – I took an empty bottle of Tilex (which I cleaned very thoroughly), added the milk and water (1 to 9) and sprayed the plants in the morning. Now I am waiting to see if the mildew goes away. Let’s hope it works! I’m rooting for you squashes! | No hay mucho que explicar – tome una botella de Tilex (la cual lave muy muy bien), agregue la leche y el agua (1 a 9) y rocie las plantas en la manana. Ahora estoy esperando para ver si el hongo se va. Espero que funcione! Estoy hinchando por los zapallos! |
